Sonic Mania |OT| Dreams Come True

Just beat the game for the first time.
Strange how anti-climatic the ending was. I was hoping for an amazing cinematic like the intro. The one there seemed very simple by comparison. Either way definitely one of my favorite games this year. I hope Sonic Forces is good.

Now to play it again with a different character! :)

Mirage Saloon taking place in Angel Island after
Hydrocity
would make the most sense. Especially since that was where the
Tornado
was left before Sonic and Tails were teleported to Green Hill.

Reason I say this is because
Little Planet
is also revealed to be
chained to Angel Island, as shown in Lava Reef
, my guess is Eggman realised his plan to utilise
Metal Sonic failed, so dropped them off Little Planet so more time would be spent working on Metallic Madness and Titanic Monarch
.

Think
Oil Ocean is an Eggman made factory, so it could technically be placed anywhere. This is the biggest mystery of the whole story so far, must also have been made on Angel Island since Lava Reef takes place after.

They need to elaborate this more with adding the missing scenes or whatever, but this is the best that I could come up with.

I am thinking about this way too hard, but...

The Gang gets warped from Angel Island to South Island / Green Hill Zone

They then get warped to West Side Island / Chemical Plant

They travel to Studiopolis via sewers

Hop onto the flying battery

Drop off at Press Garden (assumed still West Side Island)

Get Warped to Little Planet / Stardust Speedway.

Fall off Little Planet onto Hydrocity Zone (Little Planet hooked to Angel Island)

Fall out of that back to Westside Island. Grab Tornado, head to Mirage Salloon

Get shot over to Oil Ocean.

Floating Island above Oil Ocean, Get shot back to below Angel Island / Lava Reef

Get on Rocket in background of Knuckles' Lava Reef Zone to Little Planet / Metallic Madness

Go to Titanic Monarch.

This one?

Moment like those is why I will always play with Sonic and Tails, it just feels wrong to not have Tails with me.

Yesssssss, I was a bit scared that I would annoy them when I asked for it.

It's because the ending
lead to Sonic Forces.

Anyone know what time STEAM version unlocks?
Played through once on Xbox, been waiting for today.

Edit: NVM, STEAM says 6PM UK time like most games.

Separate super button is great news. I don't have to beat the game again with every character just to be able to avoid that transformation yay!

\o/

Hope they also fixed the weird system button behavior in Switch.

Just finished the game. Going into it, I had low expectations coming off the original Mega Drive games which I consider to be mediocre games that would get 5/10 on a good day quite frankly. This was much better. There were some clunky bits, such as being crushed without much time to react (a problem I had in the originals), the inability to get out of needlessly being Super Sonic whilst your rings drain, and Blue Sphere just being garbage. But most of it was good. The momentum in this game was far better than the originals and I didn't feel penalised for going fast at any point throughout the game. Level design in general was so much better, with lots of paths to take and the ability to always have a chance to get back up to the highest level, more so than the MD games. The game isn't stingy on the rings either, so I always had a good shot of getting another life. Visuals, audio and the presentation of it all was excellent. I also really enjoyed the UFO special stages, which are leaps and bounds more better than every other type of special stage, including the rotating one from Sonic 1 and the wind turbine from Sonic 2.

Overall a good game and recommended if you want something to play in bitesize chunks. I'm interested to see what these guys will put out next.

Fingers crossed that the Steam release is stable. I have that sucker pre-ordered and ready to go for today.

The extra wait wasn't so bad after all.

Steam version is FINALLY live. Utterly stupid to advertise it as being released on a specific day then only launch it 17 hours into that day though.

What was up with the PC version that it got delayed until today?
Probably just paranoid anti-piracy tech, but since its size is considerably larger than the PS4 version and is a patch ahead, maybe they had some last minute problems with the port.

2 weeks of delay to implement fucking denuvo drm.
And people are having problems launching the game and contoller support is broken.

LMAO

Good job Sega.

Well Denuvo sucks and is even worse on a late port as well. However it's running fine on my Surface with a wired Xbox One Elite controller at least. I feel like this late PC launch has cost them considerably though. You can really see that the enthusiasm from the console launch is missing now.

Are the special stage controls supposed to be so frustratingly floaty? Just seems so at odds with how tightly it controls the rest of the time.

Watching speedrunners at the mercy of Tails is pure joy.

Indeed.

Does anyone know how you unlock the good ending?

Defeat the final boss in Sonic Forces. ;p

Any news on DLC for this game? Would love to play as Amy or Metal Sonic...

I am honestly surprised that Amy wasn't a secret unlockable character, would have been cool to play as her since she did exist during the Mega Drive era and it's a shame that she was brushed aside.

Floaty in what sense, I have never felt the control to be floaty.

Ouch, sad that this have Denuvo, mainly because that means it's going to get trashed by a lot of PC gamers just because it and this game doesn't deserve it :(

I'm not even sure why Sega bothered, the DRM protection is just gonna get cracked immediately because this is the Sonic community we're talking about here.

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
:( They added Denuvo so that about kills any hopes of cool mods for now.

A month ago I was planning to buy only the PC version. Now the only reason I'm considering it is for the sake of leaving a shitty review and then immediately requesting a refund.

I don't think Taxman deserves a shitty review only because Sega wanted Denuvo on this. Just don't buy the PC version, atleast until they remove Denuvo.

I'm starting to wonder if the leaderboards on PS4 will ever become accessible...

We have a patch for consoles in the pipeline that addresses a lot of egregious stuff like that as well as other general gameplay issues (as well as separate button for Super transformations). The submission process is different for each SKU so I don't have any specifics date wise, but they will be surfacing in the future.

alr1ght

bish gets all the credit :)
Lol, fuck off Sega of Japan. Why do this? You just released a bunch of great PC ports that sold well and had no DRM.

This game fucking feels like a true sequel to the best sonic games. I think it joins BOTW and MK8 in the top tier of Switch games.

So what's going on in the second half of the story anyway

It is great! Complaining about dying in sonic by getting crushed is like... that's Sonic god damn it! You just laugh it off and try again until you beat that motherfucker!

No, but seriously, I really don't get GAF sometimes with how nitpicky it is with certain things.

Sonic fanbase is very known for being nitpickers. If the physics aren't 1:1 with Genesis ones, "non-intuitive controls", etc.

But to be fair, Mania does seems to have many pixel perfect crushes though... I don't really remember dying in Flying Battery crushed like I've seen many streamers playing Mania...

Thanks for the info. Didn't know you had a Gaf account.

Will the times we've gotten in Time Attack on PS4 be uploaded to the leaderboards once they're available or will those not count?

I don't know for certain but IIRC the issue was on the side of pulling the names to display rather than submitting scores, so theoretically they should be there. The leaderboards on PS4 worked for the first day (and during our testing), then the issue occurred when the list grew in size due to 'real world' use.

Crushes in Mania seem more strict in general, but the original games definitely had their fare share of them.

The one I remember most vividly is that it's really easy to be pinched between the spinning cylinders and adjacent platforms in S3 Hydrocity, even though it makes no sense visually.

Thanks for the updates Christian, it's very reassuring to know console patches are coming too.

I wanted to add that what you and the rest of the team made with this game is one of the most special things I've ever played, both because it means a lot as a fan and it's incredibly fun and well designed too. You guys are the best.

Just checked a few streams and no there weren't zone transitions added in. I imagine if something like that is gonna be added in a patch we'll be told flat out about it before the patch hits.

That's about where I'm at on it, only I see it as possible that it's just a second oil ocean zone built on angel island, or maybe robotnik moved the oil rig. (Angel Island is in the sea because of little planet it seems, as the intro shows, so the image wouldn't be exactly accurate would it? Eggman moving his oil rig to a "docked" Angel Island to drill for oil to fuel the rocket makes sense. In S&K the death egg was enough to weigh the island down, so maybe the phantom ruby or little planet are having a similar effect?)

Also I think Mirage Saloon might just be built over Sandopolis or near it.

I wonder if the star that shoots out from little planet is supposed to be Titanic Monarch "Escaping" or if it's JUST eggman. It's pretty large so it might be the massive robot itself?
