Are these games listed randomly or the order matters? As its hard to believe Arkham Knight at 66 while games like Bioshock, COD4 towards the end of 80s and even farcry 4 over Witcher 3. But anyways...lists like these always do this.

BoTW is great but not the best, I believe W3 is a greater triumph in world design, ambition and scope. I was staggered with W3, never quite felt that with BoTW. But ok list overall. Great games in top 10.

There's something wrong with every game. I think the highs of BoTW cancel most of its shortcomings.

it's just a list of legitimately great games that everyone should make the effort to check out. would you say anything on the list doesn't meet that criteria? don't overthink it.

But I can't understand the games picked in that context at all for half the list. It doesn't compute!!!

BB, TLOU, Dark Souls in top 5? Amazing list. Finally list that isnt filled with blind nostalgia.
Witcher 3, sotc, halo 3 should be higher, probably top 20. Gta5, uncharted 4, rez, mgs 5 should be removed , imo. Either way great list.

Furthermore, as someone who's played FFVII, if you're willing to look past the graphics the game is still a blast to play. Generally 2D ages better than 3D, but the materia system is great and the tons of Easter eggs/mini games are a delight.

I just don't know about FFVII any more. I mean the game was so significant for me, I spent the best part of a year playing it over and over again on the PSone and only just finished it again for the millionth time this year.

But.

Now I play it, I see how it creaks, all the places where it is a bit of a Frankenstein's monster of a game. I certainly would recommend it to someone if I felt they could peer past the aging process, but it probably doesn't stand up well when compared to the newer games now. I think it has aged way better that FFX has though. Going back to the remaster of that just shows the growing pains.

It's why I feel that a list like this needs to be split. Top 100 games you should play right now vs. Top 100 most significant games ever.

Besides a lot of things, it's not a bad list. Plenty of great games in there. BotW at #1 doesn't surprise me, it's changed my entire lookout on how to play games. It really made me notice how incredibly linear some games are (not a bad thing, just depends on the setup).

It just shows how much 'brand' plays into lists like these. Final Fantasy is at a low point with its brand so now people are saying what was once hailed as the greatest game ever "was never actually good" whereas Zelda is at a high point with its brand (and rightly so) so it is called the greatest game ever made.

Hardcore 101 did the same. There is something to be said for it. 1 is deeper, but 2 more focused without the insta-fail QTEs, pseudo platforming and overblown Sega hommages. Visually more appealing as well.

By straight up sequels, I think they mean iterative games within a series. So Gears of War 1,2 & 3, or the Gran Turismo's, for instance. Mario and Zelda games are generally complete reimaginings, though they do contain mini-series within them, such as NSMB or SMB 1-3.

Yeah, I don't see how you can be against including FFVII, FFXII, and FFXIV- just to name some random ones- in the same list but ok with including Dark Souls and Bloodborne in the name of diversity. IP/series name is just not that relevant.

I don't like the list, though I believe it was compiled for people who are approaching gaming right now, hence the plethora of lesser but more modern games.

That aside my top 5 would have been:

1) Doom (the original)
2) Super Mario 64
3) ICO
4) Tetris
