Secret of Mana Remake (PC/Vita/PS4, February 15th, 2018) Trailer

Indeed. People have this long-standing misconception that Secret of Mana was a CD game with lots more content at some point and that Square simply deleted a bunch of assets to make it fit into a cartridge. That wasn't the case. The original CD game was an action RPG called Chrono Trigger and it didn't really get past the planning stages on paper documents.

The CD game was canceled but Square recycled parts of its ideas into three different games: a sequel to Final Fantasy Adventure, a second game called Chrono Trigger (which reuses the title of the CD game but is different), and Chrono Cross.

Gaia's Navel for example appears in both Secret of Mana and Chrono Cross (although to be precise it was originally an idea for the canceled Famicom Disk Game Seiken Densetsu: The Emergence of Excalibur).

In Seiken Densetsu 2, that place is called ガイアのへそ (gaia's navel), and in Chrono Cross, it's called 世界のへそ (world's navel). "navel of the world" as a concept appears in many other works, including Dragon Quest 3. Many cultures of the world have a concept of an axis mundi or navel of the world, too.

It's kind of a weak connection between Secret of Mana and Chrono Cross.

I've watched it a few times now and that PAX video shows separate volume sliders for BGM and SFX but the camera is too low down to see if there;s anything above those two options. I'm wondering if there will also be a separate VOICES slider above those which could allow people to silence the talking and only play using the text boxes as what's shown of those suggests that all the required information will be included as text.

Has anybody seen anything which shows whether there is also a separate slider for the voices?

Positive previews so far (despite misgivings of the graphical style from them) and seeing the gameplay from the get go is nice.

Not shocked but saddened to hear there won't be online coop. Will be just like when I was a kid and didn't have any friends to play with. They managed to time it out perfectly to miss all the years in between then and now when I actually had friends.

The game looks great double dipping on Vita and PS4, love Secret of Mana

So according to that Twitch stream, it seems that apparently the music we've been hearing actually is the new version of the soundtrack - it's just that it's only subtly different. It was also arranged by Kikuta himself.

I have friends but they're all long distance so I'm pretty much in the same boat. This is a disappointment, for sure.

As is this. They could have really gone all out with this music, rearranged it for actual instruments. Instead, it sounds pretty much the same, just slightly clearer. Really bummed about this. Another thing I'm noticing is that Randi moves quite a bit slower than the original. It makes him feel sluggish.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I'm sure the US version will be all 3 characters in action poses staring menacingly at the player with their weapons drawn.

Something like this?

Jeez guys I was just making a quip about generic US dudebro box art. Would be kind of funny to see the Secret of Mana kids in a mockup of something like the Destiny 2 box

Were the character names fixed in the original Japan release? I always wondered where they came from

Or were they in the manual?

Source? And this is messed up. This isn't some indie developer. Release the disc!

Look at SE's track record in the west. Am I Setsuna didn't get a physical release here. Hopefully, the JPN versions include the English language text. Import that if so. But don't hold your breath for a physical release.

Also, a reminder to what we are missing out on.

:(
Hrnnnnngh. Want.

As an aside, it's a crying shame they waited with this stuff until after Hiro Isono died. I would have loved for him to paint some dedicated Secret of Mana HD remix artwork. ...four years and a bunch of months too late, dammit.

I wish Square Enix gave this sort of attention to gems from SNES era Enix like Illusion of Time and Terranigma. This artstyle and gameplay engine would seemingly fit both of those titles. Im unsure who even owns the rights to those games though :/
The only Quintet game SquareEnix has ever re-released was ActRaiser.
Chance is slime sadly.

Man, this looks so much better in action than in screens.

I like the look of it, but I'm sold on it now seeing it in motion.

Controller support? Obviously drawn to the graphical style, but is it generally considered a good port/remake

It does have controller support. The only problems I can really think of are the somewhat blurry filter on the graphics and the fact that it's 30 fps instead of the original's 60. It does have some good new features like 360 degree movement and the music no longer cutting out for sound effects, and I think some other bug fixes as well.
