Magic: the Gathering |OT13| Ixalan - Port to Sideboard

You're asking for MTGO v5, not whatever this is. The chance that they're going to completely cannibalize MTGO doesn't seem very high to me. I don't ever expect a Duels-type game to ever have drafting at all.

All their competition has some form of drafting so it would be insane if they didn't in arena. Even the name of the product is the name of Hearthstone's drafting mode. Maybe they could do the simulated drafts like Eternal if they wanted to separate Arena and MTGO.

So, can anyone offer what I should be looking at in terms of a deckbox for my Commander 2017 deck that I picked up now that I sleeved it? Figure I should pick something up, since the included thing only works for when the deck is unsleeved...

I don't think there's a ghost of a chance they do live drafting or limited in any way in this set. MTGO's entire economy is entirely based on it.

Eternal drafts are simulated? But doesn't it make you wait in a queue for people?

I thought they were but I am looking now and it seems like it might be more complicated than that...

So i guess packs never wheel. You pick a card then your pack goes into a queue that is then passed to the next person waiting for a pack. It uses an algorithm to try to give you packs in the queue based on the picks you have made so far.

If you want to go cheap you can buy a simple Ultra-Pro Pro 100+ deckbox for 2-3 bucks. If you want to go a bit more expensive I love the Ultra-Pro Satin Towers for commander decks, those are 15ish bucks.

So what is this set supposed to be? Iconic cards from the modern era? I presume it's just mid tier price reprints?

They've been annoyingly secretive re: Iconic Masters but by this weekend we'll know the cards.
It's a reprint set (probably closer to Eternal Masters rather than Modern Masters but not sure) with a small (?) iconic creature types theme (dragons, angels, demons, hydras and sphinxes)

not sure i like how spell pierce can hit things that grab lands (like attune with aether / renegade map / whatever ixalan's basic-land-fetching artifact/spell is)

I don't ever expect a Duels-type game to ever have drafting at all.

This game will 100% have drafting. Every single competing digital CCG has a limited format; they don't all work the same, and the one here might not work 100% identical to print drafting, but it'll exist and be a major headline feature.

I mean, MTGO could absolutely exist in a Hearthstone-quality game, just not for whatever money WOTC is willing to put into it.

This game has an eight figure budget. We're not talking about something remotely in the same territory as MTGO or Duels in terms of how much they're spending on it.

What they've told us is iconic creature types and iconic spells, which is.... vague.

Hearthstone wasn't actually enormously expensive at the time of launch, anyway. It's by far the smallest project team Blizzard has had since... The Lost Vikings, probably? And a faster development time than any of their big sequels.

It's really not a very expensive product to make, relatively speaking.

Random cash grab.

Here's uh...Serra Angel! Oh and reprints of Goyf, Bob, and clique.

Buy now!

What the? That's a damn strange product. Hopefully there's some useful reprints from the perspective of price entry to eternal formats... Hopefully....

They sure are releasing a lot of product in the last 6 months of the year. Commander, ixalan, iconic masters, and the un-set. Anything else?

I wonder if it will have a lower price point than eternal/modern masters.

Their site has it listed for the same prices as eternal and modern masters

The entire point is to have a prerelease where no one knows the cards, like in the old days. It's a 25th Anniversary thing.

And I have a release schedule in the second post of the thread.

Is it? I thought the 25th Anniversary thing was whatever Masters set they're doing next year - Masters 25?

What type of events happen with the release of sets like Iconic Masters and Modern Masters? Do they get the same pre-pre-release show, pre-release sealed, and release day sealed cycle or is it more like Commander 2017 where it's on the stores to host events to generate hype?

They're both 25th Anniversary things. For some reason.

We're 2 days away from people playing Iconic Masters and right now Iconic Masters and Masters 25 might as well be the same product because both of them have completely non-committal design goals other than somehow justifying TEN DOLLAR PACKS.

Stores generally fire up draft events for them and its on players get in on them since they tend to fire quickly (with competitive players) and stores tend to exhaust product. They're among the most controversial product releases WOTC does because so far they're all premium priced and aimed at the very hardcore player.

I've certainly done sealed of Modern Masters 2015, but MM2017 had nobody doing anything but draft - I went to a store where they would put out some product, people would sign up to draft, drop when they didn't open a Liliana or something and then join a new one just so they could spend like 100 dollars that day on opening product.

Hopefully they both combine to justify selling off my sets of Ports, Chalices, Scapeshifts, Canopys and Vials at the GP! :p

Supplemental sets don't get prereleases, but they typically have a week of card reveals. Iconic is an exception, with a prerelease with no card reveals to evoke how things were done before Internet card reveals were a thing.

The problem is that I don't think any of those are going to do down all that much. Cards like Tarmogoyf and Liliana have gone down but I think part of that is how often Goyf has been printed and also the fact that neither card is as dominant as it once was because Modern's opened up a lot in recent years.

Honestly, now that I don't have a two-person income I've kind of lost interest in playing expensive formats and am just looking forward to Ixalan. But good lord does the release schedule going forward look ridiculous. It's tons of product, but I don't think I can justify ten dollar packs.

I like how angry this is

I will agree that Iconic Masters and Masters 25, without any info pretty much sound like the exact same thing

Here's what I'm betting Iconic Masters is

- Cards people remember as their favorites
- Cards people remember as being broken
- Cards people remember as being fun to play

Here's what Masters 25 is

- Cards that are good in modern
- Cards that are good in Legacy
- Cards that are good in other formats (Commander)

These things overlap but not necessarily in the best ways

So I just realized the people who draft this set at Hascon are gonna make some easy bank selling their pool 10 whole weeks in advance of the actual release.

I'm feeling a Rishadan Port reprint, because I need some cheap(er) foils already. Mercadian Masques foils are insane. But we don't even know what the box looks like so... *shrug*

Anyone purchased a custom playmat from Inked? If so, worth the money?

Their playmats are good, just make sure you use the template on their website.

It would be funny if we ended up hating it as much as Thoughtsieze in standard lol!
no it wouldn't. D:

Yeah how to tell Iconic Masters and Masters 25 apart so far is impossible. I'm excited for both because they can't possibly not fill the majority of my wishlist with two Eternal Masters-like sets.

The thing about Masters 25 is that they explicitly said it would have a card from every set, kinda like the 8th Edition gimmick, which can potentially be pretty cool.

(They were doing a slow rollout, but they left the full pic in their website anyway and was found with some url tweaking)

Ya, I did it 15 minutes ago. (Well, actually Friday at GP DC.)

Oh, nice. Didn't know you were in the DC area. I could have gone but I only have bulk to offload so it can wait till the SCG open in baltimore.

I am anxiously awaiting the chalice reprint to see how hard it pops, that price capped itself off because people know that a reprint kills its value.
