For those just joining us, here are the confirmed Rares and Mythics (like Ashodin, obviously):

Rares:

Mythics:

EDIT: Archangel of Thune is rare, not mythic.

Apparently these are the mythics:

Haven't seen pics of Necropotence, Archangel of Thune, or Kiki-Jiki, though.
Malfegor is rare
How the bloody hell are the five praetors and malfegor iconic?

It's definitely iconic. The creature powerscale jumped like 2 levels when it was printed.

So...uh, is this a core set or something? Thought the new set would be in 2 weeks or is it another?

Ixalan, the new set, is coming out near the end of September.

Being spoiled today is Iconic Masters, a limited run reprint set meant to be drafted on its own and make older cards more accessible. It comes out in November and packs cost more than usual.

This is a supplemental set for drafting (and reprinting) The Masters sets have a limited release (not printed to demand like regular sets) and a premium price point. These cards won't be legal in any new formats due to this printing, so if younger going to pplay standard, none of these cards are changing that format.

This is a "Masters" set which are special, limited print run sets usually built around a specific theme which are entirely made up of reprints of old cards. Ixalan is a normal Standard set which are essentially unlimited print run sets (they print them to demand) that are Standard legal sets and are mostly new cards with a few reprints. Masters sets typically will have premium pricing, $9.99 MSRP per pack in this case, while Standard sets like Ixalan are MSRP $3.99 (although you can get them cheaper than this quite frequently).

EDIT: Beaten to the punch many times over. :p

I mean this looks like EMA 2 if a little bit more slanted towards Modern, but FWIW I did not like EMA at all and lots of people did. I also have concern that whatever they were planning ended up splitting the baby with Masters 25.

I'm still far more interested in Ixalan.

To me Iconic Masters is sort of MM15, a few extremely amazing cards like Horizon Canopy, Mana Drain and Channel but mostly bad stuff. In fact the power level they chose is so wildly unbalanced I'm not even sure if I can play Mana Drain and Channel in my cube. Not sure if I like it or not. It has an insane amount of new frame updates to my cube so it's still a win.

Although reprint sets can't really hurt the game, I can't help but feel like the Masters brand is being diluted. Too much of a good thing. We had 3 Masters sets in 3 years between MM1 and EMA. Each set felt special and something big to look forward to. Now we're going to have 3 in 12 months. IDK now that I've written this I feel bad for complaining. I'm sure I'll have fun drafting it. I wish the packs weren't $10 though.

Thanks everyone :) Sorry for the noob question, been a while. Pretty sure these sets came along after i stopped playing ( 2001 or so? ) so was a bit confused!

Ahhh, my question was cause i saw someone mention Necropotence and got me wondering since that was one of my favorite decks from that time :|

They drive down the price of singles, which is healthy for the game and growing its audience. The more the better, if you ask me—and I'll never draft a Masters set.

They introduced the Masterrs sets in 2013.

Can you imagine if they did a Zendikar-style treasure hunt for truly iconic cards pulled out of their vault? Power Nine, dual lands, etc.

Didn't they do that with Time Spiral?

Ah, no I was mixed up, sorry.

edit - okay but the Zen stuff supposedly had duals and power. It was just mega rare.

I traded for Mishra's Bauble and Archangel of Thune pretty recently so oh well but that's the nature of things. The set looks fucking bonkers though and am excited for all the cards I can grab for my cube.

They started in 2013 (the original Modern Masters) as a way to support the then-new Modern format without having to just reprint Modern-quality cards in Standard.

They re-printed a Modern staple card exactly once since Modern came out. Lots of cards enter Modern from Standard anyways, but they reprinted the card Thoughtseize once and said they wouldn't do it again.

It appears that they've changed their tune on this. Unless I'm just not seeing the other Storm and Suspend cards in IM.

We have Flusterstorm, Wing Shards and Hunting Pack so far, so we are up to 3 storm cards

Mutavault was the other card they tried reprinting into standard instead of a Master Set

Didn't realize the Open-House promo, Walk the Plank full art card, is for new players only. Kinda bummed about that...

5 player EDH is a bit intimidating for a new player. Players around here do not seem to like Standard, though.

And I'm not really digging the Dragon Shield sleeves I bought. Are Ultimate Guard sleeves better?

Sweet I'm seeing a ton of cards I'm in need of for my Mairsil deck and cards I've been looking to pick up for some time now.

The aether vial hurts because I still have my 4 for fish but they are all superior art anyway. Also just bought an O Stone.

Any guess if there's a PW they are reprinting, Ugin gotta be due one of these days.

Night of Soul's Betrayal, Rift Bolt

Burrenton Forge-Tender isn't expensive, but it's a good sideboard card in Modern, so I'm glad to see that in there.

So there're probably three suspend cards, too.

Number crunch has ruled out all Planeswalkers, I believe. I also think all the Mythics have been confirmed.

I'm not a huge fan of the Ultimate Guard matte sleeves. They are really slick, so they slide all over, even after playing like 30 matches with them. I would imagine for an EDH deck they would slide all over the table anytime someone bumped the table. The pack also had some kind of moisture in it when I opened it, which was really weird, about a third of the sleeves had a splotch on them that I had to wipe off while sleeping up my deck.

They have been holding up pretty well though. Haven't had one bust on me yet and still look clean.

So is Lightning Bolt not getting a reprint in Iconic?
I feel like that's a massive oversight on their part considering this is for famous cards.

Are those lands in the Iconic Masters or the Un set?

They look pretty damn amazing. Also the holo stamp is nice. No proxies of these...
