DOOM (Holiday 2017) and Wolfenstein II (2018) Announced for Nintendo Switch

Can we finally agree that Nintendo is Doomed?

Wonder if we might be seeing a Fallout as a result. Again, I'd probably be inclined to go for an earlier title - 3 or NV - but that's just my completionist attitude, I think.

I wonder if there would be issues with Obsidian if they ported New Vegas. I imagine there would be a lot more fervour for an NV port.

Funny enough DOOM makes perfectly sense for Nintendo strategy for Switch.
Nintendo is clearly aiming for the old farts that are nostalgic for '90s gaming.
Bomberman, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Street Fighter 2, Mana Collection and so on are all there to entice those old gamers.
This is partly because there is an overlap with Nintendo own core fans but also because many of those old gamers have a full-time and a family which drains play time therefore Switch core proposition of play whenever and how you like is a good value for them.

Oi you cheeky young git :p

I'm going to get a switch at some point but finances are currently holding me back. That Wolf 2 on switch is making me consider taking out a loan.......

I'm still not getting over this...

Doom and Wolfie on the go?

I can splat demons and Nazis where the heck I want?

Visual downgrade makes no diff for me, as I already played Doom on PS4 but I'll DEF double dip for a portable version.

How awesome is it to be able to play Doom, say, on an airplane or on the ceramic throne?

Megaton, i wonder if others will follow Bethesda.

Cool to see it in a handheld, but it looks pretty rough tbh.

Yes, i haven't played doom(actually i have played the demo on low settings so doesn't count lol) but it seems to me that lights and shadows are very downgraded, i don't think that a big game like Doom on PC or consoles is like that.
Also the graphics' quality in the trailer isn't consistent, there are moment when it looks awesome and others were it looks like shit like here

I wonder if it's all Switch footage.

When is the game coming? Graphics improve as it nears completion.

That's the only real blemish of doom, even on PC, there are some huge discrepancies in quality. Like most assets and textures are pristine, then you get some low res garbage on some assets, that look straight out of a PS2 era game (especially the flesh piles look comically bad at times.

lol, wut? you get far more than 3 hours playing BOTW.

Far more.

"Far more" seems a stretch. Most I've got playing BoTW is ~3 hr 30 mins with airplane mode on and brightness way down. (Which is very respectable if you ask me!)

Inconsistent IQ makes sense as it's still in development.

Pinikies are definitely not this large, a very truncated FOV would do that though.

I am super curious to see the framerate and performance of this game on switch. Obviously gameplay will have massive turned down settings.. .but I am really curious.

What I'm curious about is the size of those games.
I mean NBA2K was supposed to be too large for the Switch-cartridges. But what about Doom and Wolfenstein?

Definitely not going to by Wolfenstein 2 on switch and I already own Doom, but WOW. I wonder if they are going to hit 60fps.

Man, waking up and it doesn't quite feel real.

But yeah, definitely gonna be interesting to see what the performance/image quality balance is like.

PS4 and Xbox One versions had an FOV setting in the options menu, like the PC version. Maybe they'll make it adjustable here as well.

Gyro aiming would be pretty nice with separated joycons.

I don't think Bethesda/ID care about gyro aiming. They could have done it on the PS4 already if they did.

If they're able to achieve 60 fps then holy shit id programmers.

Definitely wouldn't mind purchasing a Switch for Doom & Wolfy on the go.

This shot in particular, looks terrible. Doom 3 on the original Xbox looked better iirc. How many times is Switch more powerful than that console? About 24 times? Skyrim looks a lot better, and Doom should be easier with closed environments, so i'm hoping they have a lot of polishing planned before it ships. If it looks decent, i'll surely get it.

You certainly are not remembering correctly.

It also has a high chance of being 60fps while Skyrim is 30. Doom is also a current gen PS4 game.

Look up Doom on Xbox if you're seriously arguing that Doom 4 on Switch looks worse than Doom 3 on the original Xbox.
Besides, as scalable as idtech is and despite the closed environments, Doom is still a much more recent, much more demanding game than Skyrim. I don't even know how you can honestly overlook this. Skyrim looks great because the system is powerful enough to run a 2011 game at what most would consider high/maximum fidelity. Doom, on the other hand, will always be compromised in some ways. Run Doom and Skyrim on the same computer and you'll see that one runs much better than the other.

You can check Doom3 BFG on Shield to get an idea on how a Tegra X1 can run Doom 3 and the difference with Doom (2016):

You may want to take a look back at OG xbox doom 3. You may be saying that though because doom 3, even on OG box, still had a good amount of stencil shadows in the environment and being casted from monsters and whatnot. The footage here, the game play footage, has presumably eliminated tons of shadow casting lights (their cast shadow flag probably), so as to save on performance.

Doom relies a lot on its lighting, post processing, and shadowing to complement its shading model. If you cut out a lot of the directional lighting, shadowing, and post processing (motion blur for example), you would have the appearance of a much older looking game.

Doom I'll get so I can play that in bed, but I'll probably skip Wolfenstein. Getting it on Xbox. If it was a double pack with the first then I'd definitely consider it though.

Just checked the trailer on a frame-by-frame basis, it's definitely 30fps.

But so is Super Meat Boy Forever in the Direct. In fact, only Nintendo's own games appear to have 60fps trailers. So it's probably "wait and see" for Doom.

Also, the quality of this .gif is frakking terrible. It is so low framerate that is honestly gets me a bit dizzy. That framerate and quality also makes the game look rougher than it actually is.

Here is a much better one at the same resolution I just made:

Here you can see the game is using TAA (look at the trails):

Interesting to see the same GPU particles after he opens the door that the higher end version have:

I WAS WRONG ABOUT SWITCH GRAPHICS PERFORMANCE

I'll be getting Doom.

EDIT: Looks like I got overexcited. Doom could run on a PS3.

I'm not sure if that's true, PS3 has way less RAM than even the Switch and DOOM has those megatextures. And I'm sure it's missing some of the more modern GPU features that the Switch/PS4/XB1 have.

As one of said old farts I couldn't be happier. It makes sense that their surveys showed something like 75% of Switch owners to be 21 or older.

What I'm curious about is the size of those games.
I mean NBA2K was supposed to be too large for the Switch-cartridges. But what about Doom and Wolfenstein?

I thought NBA2K was said to be around 6 GB? The download requirement is for the digital game code at retail, the physical version is coming later for some reason.

I don't think Bethesda/ID care about gyro aiming. They could have done it on the PS4 already if they did.

Bethesda included gyro aiming for Skyrim Switch.

Looks nice, basically looks like lighting and texture detail took a hit, with environmental textures being downgraded more than character model textures. Sounds quite reasonable.

Some very suspect texture work going on in the Switch version, it's pretty noticeable even in these small shots. I guess it's acceptable if they get it to 60 fps, which is necessary for a game like this.
