iPhone X | OT | November 3

Been having second thoughts about waiting for the iPhone X.

I have an iPhone 6. I feel like iOS 11 won't be kind to my phone. So I'm in need of an upgrade. The question is, do I get the 8 Plus now and wait until the kinks are worked out with the new design of the X, or do I put up with my iPhone 6 for another almost 2 months for what the X will offer (pretty much screen space, camera). The price is high, but after waiting this long, don't mind it.

Whichever phone I get, I want to keep for at least another 2-3 years. Maybe longer.

Thoughts? Any other iPhone 6 people out there?

I am in the same boat and waiting for the X. I was originally going to grab an 8plus but decided the X was what I really wanted. Already installed iOS11 on my 6 and it’s a little sluggish but others have said it’s better for them. Might need a proper reset.

I'm thinking of getting the 8 and selling it before the X1, X2, XS or whatever it's called is revealed. I already had to repace my 6's battery once and like you said, who knows how IOS 11 will have an effect on it.

The 2nd generation of the X probably won't bring back Touch ID but it will probably have ProMotion and most apps will likely have adjusted for the screen size.

launch 6 Plus. Will go X. My profile is so screwed up right now (cellular view does not show app and usage)

I am going to upgrade from my 7+ to X. I am pretty sure I can sell the 7+ for 700-800$ here in Canada since it still has apple care on it.

Going from a 16GB 6S to a 256 GB 8+, more space all around!

My job approved the cost of the biggest 8+ but not the 64GB X even though it's a $50 difference, but I can't complain I guess

Shouldn't they be exactly the same?

Not necessarily, nobody knows what the clockspeed is going to be set to on each model, plus there's the issue of throttling. Apple's phones are notoriously good on delaying throttling but it eventually has to happen because the only thing dissipating heat is the case material.

Plus resolution differences (moreso GPU obviously).

I thought iOS rendered everything at the same resolution regardless of device or something along those lines.
Not as far as I'm aware, I think that's only the Plus that renders higher internally? But for gaming performance there should be differences among the A11 given differing device resolutions.

Yep everything is rendered seperately. The SDK considers points vs. pixels, but at the end of the day GPU rendering is a per-pixel thing.

The iPhone 6/7/8+ render higher internally then drop to 1080p but that's a special case, purely because of a mathematical issue between the resolution of the screen Apple decided to ship vs. the asset resolution that screensize requires.

iPhone X seems to render at exactly its screen res, so even if the GPU is muscular and the performance hit is tiny, there will be a difference.

I really don't like the whole "Swipe top right corner to get control center" thing. It seems confusing to have three swipe down options and it makes it impossible to do one-handed. One of the things I like about iOS is that the control center can easily be accessed with one-hand compared to Android whereas it is a swipe down from the top bar to access those kinds of settings. I would have liked to see something like maybe 3D Touch swipe from the bottom to bring up control center, but maybe that wouldn't trigger well enough compared to accidentally exiting an app.

I was thinking about this the other day but doesn't face ID ruin the whole "Turn my phone on just to check notifications real quick" kind of deal? I thought people complained a lot when the iPhone 6S released because it unlocked too fast and some people just wanted to check notifications so Apple patched something to fix that.

Yeah, so what they did was they made it so even after authenticating it takes a conscious action to get past the lock screen. For the iPhone X it’s the swipe up, for everything else it’s pushing the home button. If you want to just check your notifications just don’t swipe up

the Gruber is speaking:

https://daringfireball.net/2017/09/iphone_x_event_thoughts_and_observations

But Apple became convinced that Face ID was the way to go over a year ago. I heard this yesterday from multiple people at Apple, including engineers who've been working on the iPhone X project for a very long time.

I don't know why recent supply chain rumors suggest Apple was scrambling to get Touch ID working on iPhone X as late as this summer, and no one at Apple seems to know either. Disinformation campaign from competitors?

But I spent time — both officially, as a member of the media, and unofficially, as a friend — with several Apple employees who are already carrying an iPhone X as their daily-use phone, and from what I observed and from what they told me — and again, several of these employees are engineers, not PR or product marketing folks — it just works.

The notch: It offends me. It's ungainly and unnatural.

In landscape, the notch looks like a joke. I think Jony Ive either lost a bet or lost his mind.

So iPhone users get the best in both regards: they get the iOS experience and Apple-designed hardware, and they get the vastly superior CPU and GPU. And Android users who want industry-leading performance are shit out of luck.

First, inductive charging is not ”wireless". Here's what I wrote back in June:

Fuck yes. This "wireless" charging is horseshit.

I could possibly do that, considering my phone can hold out until then.

I have a 6 with a battery that I replaced last year and it's already going bad again. I can wait 2 months but I can't see myself waiting another 14 months for the next X. Just get the X and if you want you can sell it next year.

You also aren't going to get any promo deals for the 6 next year. Right now it looks like we will get 300$ for our phone and that's more than its worth for sure.

? it's literally wireless though, hugely overrated as someone who's used it before, but still literally wireless

If Apple or any manufacture released a notebook computer that had "wireless" internet, but in order to use the internet you had to place it on a mat on your desk, would that be "wireless" internet? I contend not. "Wireless" internet means being able to use that notebook computer anywhere in your home or wherever within a certain distance of a router. I think the same for "wireless" charging. If I can charge my phone ANYWHERE in my house, then that is wireless. Else, it's just inductive or magnetic charging, and it's lame.

When my phone immediately starts charging in my pocket when I get home, or at the office, or in my car, what do we call that technology? Right now, we call that wireless internet if it portends to transmit wireless data. We should do the same for when we actually get to wireless charging/power.

AirPods: wireless EarPods! (has a wire connecting left and right EarPod) /s

does it need a wire/cable? No? Then It's wireless you goofy

Man my launch 6 plus is on its last legs. Recently got the touch disease so I'm going X.
I also think it's going to be hot in the NY streets and subways if you know what I mean

Wireless charging is actually pretty convenient when you get used to it. One of the few things I miss since leaving my S7. Great scenario is having a wireless charger by your desk. You pick up your phone whenever you need to use it and set it back down on the charger when you're not. When you leave the office, your phone is fully charged, even if you've been constantly picking it up throughout the day. Yes, you can do this with a cord, but most people won't plug and unplug a wire all day.

People thought it was a big deal when lightning came out and you didn't have to worry about what way you plugged the cord in. How is it not a big deal to not have to plug anything in at all?

Upgrade every year, as I pass down my old phone to my Pops. So he basically is only a year behind tech wise.

Debating whether to go 64GB for the X or go all out and pick up the 256GB version around release. As is, I have the 50GB iCloud monthly plan, Apple Music and unlimited data so I have been fine. Unfortunately, with the effects of Hurricane Irma I had to experience life without The Cloud for a few days and shit was First World Problem as shit. Local storage is winning out because of that very rare scenario but I’m still unsure.

Decisions decisions.

Inductive charging is great and convenient! I just don’t think it is “wireless” and it perverts what actual wireless charging will be when it arrives in the coming years.

Anyway, I’m done and I made my point.

If a company actually releases a consumer product (and we know many companies have been working on it) where your device is charged as long as you are within the "wireless signal" (similar to WiFi), what would you call it? True wireless? Wireless 2.0? It seems calling it inductive charging is less misleading.

Should have called this near field charging or proximity charging. "Nobody" knows what inductive means.

Edit: you know they will just call it something dumb like WiPi

But it has to be in direct contact with a device that needs a wire. Calling it wireless seems to be a bit of a stretch.

Technically, doesn't need to be direct contact (works through a case), just really close. The term is not "contactless", anyway. Whether the base has a wire is irrelevant. My wireless router has a wire and I have to be within range of it.

The range difference here is pretty important though. If I had to keep my phone on top of my router, with or without a case, to use the internet I think it would be a stretch to call it wireless. That being said this is a stupid argument about semantics, it's a neat feature.

I had a 6S. I wanted X but I'm not interested in beta testing that so I decided on an 8 and I'll upgrade next year. Then I compared 8 to 7 and honestly saw no reason to get one. So I went out and bought a 7+ today and I'll trade it in a year from now. I think that's the most responsible option.

Yeah silver looks white in all the videos. White back and black front is a gross combo so I’m going Space Grey.

I‘m in the same boat. Promised my mom that she gets my iP7 this year.

I am shit out of luck with the pricing though as the X 256gb costs 1300€+ here (the currency differences are absolutely insane) and I‘m not sure if 64gb is enough for me. My 7 has 128gb currently and I‘m at 50gb used (music collection etc increasing every day).

Guess I‘ll have to bite and buy the 256gb one... I just hope they don‘t iPad 3/iPhone 6 it (as in the new lost generation). That‘d be a bitter pill to swallow if next years iPhone is cheaper, has Touch ID in addition to Face ID and eliminates the notch (although I guess that‘s their new branding).

Haha, that's spot on. I'd love to have Jonys genuine thoughts on it simply because it goes so against all other designs.

Honestly I think you made a poor choice.

For not that big of a price difference, you get double the performance processor-wise, upgraded cameras, wireless charging, fast charging, True tone display. There are other minor feature upgrades like BT5.0 etc. but all-in-all the 7+ is a poor choice considering the price difference.

I'm never, ever going to use it, but I'm stuck with the glass fingerprint magnet back. I'd pay more for metal instead.

Just my 2 cents, but I love wireless charging. I have chargers around the house, wherever I am I can just plop the phone down and get some more juice. It’s also really nice to not fiddle with a cable at night on my nightstand. I think it’s a real neat feature, just wanted to give you some of my uses in case it helps change your mind.

I would have kept the 6s in this scenario.
