Spelunker Party (Square Enix) coming west for Switch and PC on October 19

so how does this relate to Spelunker World that release couple years ago on PS4?

I can only speak technically, but Spelunker World was locked to 30fps, whereas this one is 60fps (at least on Switch. PC version is new but I'd be surprised if it wasn't):

The 60 FPS is a huge improvement over the PS4 version. I never spent a dime on Spelunker World (because it wasn't really necessary) but this is a Day 1 purchase if they localize it. I'm hesitant to go for a Japanese copy right now only because it took a whole 8 months for them to make a peep about bringing Spelunker Z to the west.

Edit: just discovered a big change from the PS4 version: abilities with the same effect DO stack now. On PS4 if you equipped say a hat and a backpack that both gave extra lives, only one would work and the other would be cancelled out, but it seems that they combine in this version.

Edit again with some more updates: Doggie Digging unlocks after you clear 1-5. I've 3-starred 10 stages and am at Level 11, but Quests haven't unlocked yet. I have to work now unfortunately but I'll post again when I know when Quests unlock! I've also started filling in Item information on the Google spreadsheet.

OT for the Japanese version of Minna de Waiwai Spelunker Switch: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1361897

Anyone knows if the japanese demo is a good indication of the final product ?

Becuase that was the worst demo I played on the switch

Surprised SE is publishing themselves in the west rather than Tozai Games.

From my understanding it's basically a packaged release of all the previous f2p model content from World.

YES

My post from the other thread still stands. DAY 1!

What you see is what you get, if you didn't like the demo you certainly won't like the full game. But hey, Spelunker isn't for everyone.

This is actually quite surprising.

Between this and DQ Builders it's looks like Square Enix is taking advantage of the fact they were ready to support Switch before everyone else.

Ooh, free demo. I'll give this a try. Hope they do one for Dragon Quest Builders, I believe there was one for the original release.

Neat, I'll try out the demo in October.

Time for Collection of Mana. M2 wants to do it!

This would be even better, I'm sure it would make lots of sales worldwide compared to the Japanese release despite the Secret of Mana remake releasing on other platforms.

For those who play the Japanese version, just curious if the game gets any of the limited time events that the PS4 version does? Just recently in the PS4 version you could unlock NieR Automata costumes.

Is it the same content as Spelunker World? Looks pretty similar.

Yeah, as far as I understand it's just Spelunker World with all of the F2P elements stripped and some extra content/small QoL changes.

Is it similar to Spelunky? Still more japanese goodness on pc!

No. Spelunker games are closer to traditional 2D platformers. There's no roguelike elements, and any items that appear in stages really only give temporary benefits. As well, the difficulty leans more towards "unfair" than a game like Spelunky. For one thing, Spelunker has fall damage. Every enemy/environmental hazard is also a one hit kill. The difficulty can easily turn off people, but once it clicks the gameplay becomes really rewarding. I assume there will be a demo due to one already existing for Switch in Japan, but if you have a PS4 lying around you can always try the F2P version Spelunker World to get a feel for it.

It did better than expected in Japan too. A global release would easily outperform what the SD2 remake is going to do imo.

Heh I imported the Switch version recently.

At least if it's not a physical release there's that, won't have imported for absolutely nothing. :lol

How does this compare to Spelunky?

It a modern day reimagining of a 30 year old game. It's more a puzzle game than what Spelunky was. There is no roguelike-like elements. You are underground, there are vines and ladders and things want to kill you - so that the same. Both have great hummable music.

None of the collaboration stuff is included (and there aren't any ongoing content updates or anything) - it's the main 4 worlds from the PS4 game
plus a 5th world made up of some of the early event stages from the same (Classic Spelunker, Championship stages, etc).

But yeah no idea why this took so long, glad to see it coming out though. It's not even on the eShop coming soon yet lol

Cool, thanks for the info, Speed!

Haha, I literally imported the Japanese version within the past few days. Figures. I may still get this anyway just to support it and have it in English.

Got the demo from the Japanese eShop. It's quite fun, actually, even if it's not a looker and feels awkward sometimes, once you get the controls and understand the gameplay.

The Japanese demo have a nice amount of stages to try :).

God damn I fucking love Spelunker.

Hopefully this is closer to Spelunker HD than to the weird f2p PS4 version. It looks like while it borrows assets from the PS4 version, the gameplay is closer to HD.

Can anyone confirm if the customisation is cosmetic only? Or nah?

Awesome news. I love Spelunker.

For anyone disappointed it's not Spelunky, give it a look anyway. Spelunky is basically a reimagining of the original Spelunker and there are some similarities -- both have a time-out ghost, emphasis on collecting treasure, both are challenging and strict, and both require a firm understanding of all the mechanics to get anywhere. Spelunker is much more rigid though. You don't have the freedom of movement that Spelunky has, nor is it as fast-paced.

From what I played of the demo I'm pretty sure this is literally the F2P PS4 version but without the F2P part. It was basically identical to Spelunker HD's gameplay though so I'm not sure why you would have disliked it.

And no, it's not just cosmetic. The customization gives you different stats and abilities just like in the PS4 version.

I was pretty interested in this byt last didn't think it'd make it over, yay! Good stuff, I'll have to try the demo.
