Scanline screenshot thread. Because 240p is all the p's I need.

A little bit of Streets of Rage 2, my favourite of the series. Also has the nicest graphics overall i think.

And one from Streets of Rage 3. I really like the running and rolling they introduced to the gameplay, but the enemies got a whole lot more erratic in their movement in return. The attacks seem to lack impact and the bosses are also a right PITA, especially the 2 jumping women in stage 2! I had to turn it off before i threw a controller through my TV :D

I picked up 5 boxed Super Famicom games from the recycle shop today for around 2000 yen, all of them included on the Super Famicom Mini... i guess someone got their preorder in! I won't be needing one :D Didn't bother taking pics of Super Formation Soccer or Super SF2, so here's the rest!

Starfox
I got this despite already owning it cause the box was in much better condition than the one i already have. Haven't played it for years but it holds up pretty well IMO. Frame rate doesn't bother me, only real issue i have is with the popup, some enemies and obstacles can literally appear right in front of you!

Seiken Densetsu 2
Won't be able to get very far in Japanese I fear, but have always wanted to play this, and knew it'd be a nice one to show off here!

Super Mario RPG
Have only played this briefly before, but need to give it a full playthrough after enjoying Bowser's Inside Story, then being disappointed with Dream Team Bros. Still undecided on the Superstar Saga remake... i'm shocking at the timing of dodges in the GBA original!

Curiosity got the better of me and so I tried Saturn connected directly to my 4K TV through standard AV. The TV doesn't have S-Video or else i'd have tried that instead... so here's a comparison!

And no amount of setting changes was helping it at all!
As if there was ever any doubt that you need the XRGB or OSSC to remotely enjoy playing retro games these days.

The future of TVs doesn't inspire confidence... most of the TVs i looked at when deciding didn't have S-Video, and half of them didn't have Component either. Honestly it's a wonder they even bother including AV with that kind of quality! It's almost scary enough to convince me to buy another XRGB in case anything happens to the one i've got!

Got a question and maybe this is the thread to ask:

What's a decent, and decently large, sized CRT TV brand I should keep my eyes open for? I just moved into a new place with a full basement room available for my various hobbies and I'm thinking of getting an old CRT used for my old consoles.

I thought we had a policy against posting disturbing and horrifying content.

Hehe sorry, maybe this batch will make up for it? Though it's not exactly 240p either!

F-Zero GX
PAL version running on a JP Wii through Component/D-Terminal to XRGB!
Wii is set to 480i since forcing 480p doesn't want to jive with XRGB for some reason.
Wii in Wide Screen, game in Wide Screen. I tried FBX's profiles for this game, but apart from his filling the entire screen, i prefer using basic presets. 720p may be a fraction softer than 1080p in theory, but I can't tell when 1080p just looks smeared. This is very reminiscent of my old Sony CRT I think.

On a side note, damn the Zoom_Set and Visual_Set options on XRGB are so confusing! And the ones that blank the screen between changes are a total pita. I don't think i'll ever be able to fully grasp how to use it properly. Thankfully I think the presets look great, since any time i try manually adjusting, something or the other gets borked!

What size are you looking for?

Probably between 20" and 30" to start. Anything over 27 inches will be very heavy and hard to move, so be careful!

Personally, I think 14" or 20" is good for modern times. Anything bigger truly looks like a giant anachronism and is likely to have geometry issues.

Thanks guys. Will be scouring craigslist in the next week or so.

EDIT: And whaddaya know, 26" Sony for sale down the road from me for $15. Sold!

What CRT is that? I love the look of those pixels. Nice and soft and the scaling effect isn't too "in your face."

I'm retired from CRT shopping, but I want to get a large SD consumer set that can take component someday if I ever move out to the suburbs.

I try to go back to Super Contra but Mode 7 was a mistake. NES and Hard Corps is where it's at. Although, as a kid, I could beat Super Contra but I get nowhere in any of the others. I wonder if there's a romhack without the Mode 7 stages.

That looks amazing. I really need to mod my PCE

It's a Sony PVM1910 from the late 80s. For a low line count at about 300, it manages to display 240p superbly without exagerated / thick scanlines, looks just right in RGB. 480i doesn't look as hot though, but who plays in 480i am I right?
