I've spent about an hour messing around with this now and I'm very impressed with it. I'm not quite convinced that textures are any better, I get the feeling that it's just a byproduct of the higher buffer resolution.

I would have loved to have seen HDR implemented but it can be an incredibly difficult thing to add to some games if they're not built with HDR in mind. It's a shame that it's not there and I'd even be willing to pay to see it implemented but I can't imagine it's really worth it for them.

Nevermind, I'm still happy and pleasantly surprised with what they've done here.

That doesn't seem like a very robust method when you factor in the whole array of post processing which also creates artefacts, differ per game, and that there's no solid definition for the type of artefacting you're looking for. Whereas it would be relatively simple to write a program to check how many pixels change per frame.
CBR artifacts differ from almost all other types, because it consists of individual pixels, in a sawtooth or checkerboard pattern. While this is similar to some dithering patterns for lighting or transparency, those methods aren't as common anymore. And in addition, CBR artifacts tend to be ragged and disjoint (where motion vectors are least predictable), whereas blend dithering is intended to grade smoothly. Finally, CBR as usually practiced takes place very late in the rendering cycle, so its artifacts tend to be sharper than those from other methods, which may be smoothed by later processing.

In the end, whether for the above reasons or not, single-frame diagnosis of CBR simply is robust. Watching for artifacts in motion is even more probative, because the human visual system picks up on change more easily. But those problems you see in motion are also there when static, so close examination can find them.

Yet they had no plans for a PS4 Pro patch, which they stressed multiple times, and only after a patch for the One X was announced, they acknowledged one was in the works for PS4 Pro too.
I agree, they simply had to give the PS4 Pro one too...even if they were probably approached only by Microsoft to do one for their new system.

this is true.

Watching the NXGamer video, he does show what appear to be CBR artifacts. These have not been apparent in any of the screenshots posted to GAF, but this could be due to those shots having good reconstruction. It thus seems more likely than not that this is not native 4K, but 2160c instead.

The IQ in Novigrad is now unbelievable.

And in Toussaint (Blood and Wine expansion) I can see a very increased LOD and less pop-up. I don't know if it's only my suggestion, but I remember this section worse before the patch.

PS. My history update says "1.51". I downloaded 1.51, definitely. But in the main menu the game says "1.50". Maybe a glitch?

It actually downloaded 1.50 and 1.51 today, the second update is just listed as bug fixes. They did download as a single update for me though.

Plot twist: maybe he see artifacts from using fp16

I wouldn't be too surprised if it's not native 4k; an RX 470 seems to struggle with 4k medium settings at locked 30 fps, and it sounds like people are saying some settings got increased and made it more demanding.

I can't seem to trigger 1.5.1, how do I get it?

I think there's some glitch.
I downloaded 1.51 and 1.50 as a single update, 1.51 is listed in my update history, but the main game is updated only to the 1.50 version

And for some people it's worse, they can not download 1.51 at all.

I'd like to give the game another chance as I didn't enjoy my short(30hrs) time with it. This many patches later do I still need to worry about weapon and armor wear and tear so frequently?

Both the game and my notifications say 1.50.

Sony plz.

Edit: Shit, still looks pretty incredible.

the IQ is so much cleaner. mannnnnnnnn i really want to do that NG+ playthrough now.

just need to clear up ~100 hours of free time and i'll be all set!

Why are people expecting better textures? That's not really gonna be happening for any pro games is it? I'm under the impression that there's not enough memory bandwidth for 4K assets.

I can't wait to start this game up again. I've been waiting on this patch before starting the expansions. Too bad I need to wait =(

Still damn impressive. I was expecting a bump to 1440p, so this is a welcome surprise.

I wouldn't be surprised if the clearer textures and shadows were entirely due to the jump in resolution and not better filtering or higher resolution buffers.

I'd be in the dick
Patch seems really impressive. Expected a quick 1440p job since they had originally said they weren’t doing a Pro update but the results seems great, better than some other games heavily touting their Pro support. Haven’t seen any game since The Division’s proper Pro patch have this much difficulty determining exactly what methods are being used. A good thing, proves CDPR our a lot of work into creating a pleasing image for 4k displays despite the limited hardware of the Pro.

Hmn, worth it gaf? Never played it. But was always interested. How clean is it downsampled in 1080P and how does it run?
This game is worth it more than any other game I've played this gen. Absolute masterpiece. I already put a few hundred hours into it on pc, wish I would've bought it here when it was on sale.

Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption are my favorite games of all time. Worth it. Both games completely took me by surprise too as far as that goes so I didn't walk into either expecting greatness.

They also cemented the idea to me that I don't prefer the silent protagonist - not when you can have a protagonist you love to play in your own way and learn more about.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!

Put 300 hours in doing everything on a single playthrough over the course of a year and a half. I wish it lasted another 300...

Watching it go from day to night once in 4K is enough to convince me this is the greatest looking game ever (maybe not technically but artistically):

Blackthorn

"hello?" "this is vagina"
Comparing all these shots in this thread...did they turn off or dial back the ambient occlusion?
Definitely not turned off, it was still very apparent when I was playing.

I found the SSAO one of the uglier aspects of the visuals before so I hope they have refined it. I remember a noticeable halo around Geralt’s legs much of the time.
