Avatar: The Last Airbender comic gets new creators, new designs

Link.

Avatar: The Last Airbender ended in 2008, but the story has been kept alive in the years since by a series of comics written by Gene Luen Yang, the award-winning author of American Born Chinese. Now, the torch is being passed once again. EW can exclusively announce that writer Faith Erin Hicks (The Nameless City) and artist Peter Wartman (Over the Wall) will be taking over Avatar: The Last Airbender comics starting next year.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of my favorite things in the world,” Hicks said in a statement. “I’m totally not kidding: I remember watching the series finale over ten years ago when I was a struggling animator, wishing I could work on a show that was even ten percent as thoughtful and compelling as Avatar. I was so in love with the world and characters. Even now, there’s nothing that has filled my heart quite like Avatar, and I’m so honored to contribute to the real thing.”

As Yang did, Hicks and Wartman will work closely with Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko to continue to build the fictional world of Aang and his friends. DiMartino has also been busy writing sequel comics to Avatar’s companion series, The Legend of Korra; the first volume of Turf Wars by DiMartino and artist Irene Koh was one of EW’s favorite pop culture highlights of the summer.

Below, you can check out Wartman’s new designs of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph. Their comic is due out in 2018.

I stopped reading in the middle of Smoke and Shadows and never continue them. I should probably start looking to read the rest.

I am a black hole of righteousness, taking in the poor opinions of this thread of those who think Aang is any good beyond the show.

Yup.

Aang comes up with cool new bending tech. What does Korra do? That's right she does absolute jack.

Only one true Avatar.

He’s gotta find some other claim to fame after his predecessor saves the world 🌎 (a bunch).

Aang would probably try to talk Vaatuu down or some shit.

Same. I love ATLA, but its world does not really need to be expanded upon.

Korra's world is generally much more interesting and less explored in the series itself.

Breh the short flashback in Season one of the original gang had more interesting and charismatic characters than the main cast of Korra. We were screwed over.

Still need to pick up the last one, good to hear these comics are continuing along side Korra ones I imagine.

Just make another show.

Probably not gonna happen unless Nick reboots it, most of the original staff/creators have moved on to other projects and shows.

Studio Mir (if there ever is another Avatar series they should animate it) are busy with Netflix Voltron.

My ranking for the comics from best to not the best

The Rift
North and South
The Promise
Smoke and Shadow
The Search

Unlike a lot of people, I've really enjoyed the comics and I feel the writer and artist really nails the tone and characters, and especially the comedy. The Rift is my favorite since it tackles Aang's anxiety at his culture disappearing and being replaced by a Earth Refinery, lots of arguing between Aang and Toph, and also has some Yang Chen Flashbacks along with a battle with a spirit. Some real good Air Nomad-y goodness.

North and South tackles Katara fear of progress with the Southern Water Tribe expanding and mimicking the Northern Tribe along with her fear of her dad moving on and forgetting about her mother.

The Promise shows the tension between Aang and Zuko and what it means to restore balance to the world right after a war where cultures have mingled and mixed. Do you uproot Fire Nation settlers and send them back even when some have married Earth Kingdom people?

Smoke and Shadow tackles what the Fire Nation people think of Zuko, and whether he is an usurper to the throne.

The Search is Zuko finding his mom. It's kind of lame but still enjoyable enough. I think a lot of people thrown by a dumb fakeout the comic pulls.
