What part of not wanting to support a developer that refuses to even clarify why Jafari still has a role in the game is political to you?
Not interested in picking this up because of personal reasons. MechaTheSlag has a pretty awful past.

go watch the current sunshine world record speedrun.
Then come back and tell me that mario's movement mechanics weren't the most godlike thing you've seen in a 3D platformer (on a level way higher that other 3D platformer that were, overall, much better games than sunhine).
Sunshine may have been a mess in some regards, but to act like there wasn't a lot to learn from it's movement mechanics is idiotic.
There is a purposeful reason the word "toxic" is chosen when describing individuals that have lost favor within public discourse.

The controls in the galaxy games arent anything compared to sunshine and 64. Mario is so incredibly limited. Its the level design that makes those games great; not Mario himself

Yeah, pretty much. I love the Galaxy games, but controlling Mario doesn't feel as fluid as it does in Sunshine.

The developers surely knew at some point in the 6 months since JonTron became a white nationalist and recently, but they haven't done anything about it. So for me, they're complicit. They're fine with it.I know they're stuck between a rock and a hard place. They've spent years working on this game, their livelihoods depend on it, and this is the path that causes the least damage. But the most convenient path isn't always the one to be celebrated. They may have done the best they can, and they certainly didn't realize how awful Jontron was when they first accepted his pledge and recorded his VA. Maybe they'll do other things in the future to make up for this. It's just not something I personally want to support.
And to the rest of the people brushing it off as "just a line or two":

Other people might be fine with a white nationalist voicing a few lines in a game because at least he's not spouting his political ideology.
Then they should be fine with me not purchasing their game.

The gradual nerf of the long jump and removal of the slide entirely was what hurt mario's mechanics in games like Galaxy and 3D World.
Oh and the triple jump going away too pissed me off.
A Hat in Time always looked better.

To not give any background on how the Kickstarter campaign was handled or the accusations about Mecha the Slag predating the game is to tell only a fraction of the story. But that's par for the course for Polygon, all the better to make pie charts out of.
I dont know if Gaf likes Vinny or not but i feel like he would get chewed out here for jokingly saying the the world didnt explode because of Jon being in the game.

A Youtuber that I follow, Mark Brown, sounded pretty critical of them for not removing Jon.
I think most people who are posting here are aware of the allegations against him because they've been posted repeatedly in every single thread that has to do with the game he worked on. Just because someone doesn't take your approach and reasoning doesn't mean they're ignorant. Personally, I'm particularly uncomfortable with the idea of digging up dirt on someone just because they're associated with someone/something else, because I really don't think this info would be surfacing now if it weren't for the JonTron connection. I'm also quite uncomfortable with judging someone based on anonymous unverified rumours and making decisions that affect their ability to earn a livelihood on that basis.
Are you seriously suggesting that a journalist should publish potentially defamatory unproven allegations (some of which come secondhand) against someone based on anonymous blog and forum postings? Do you really think doing so would demonstrate journalistic integrity?
This is a really good observation. Meaningful collectibles in smaller, fuller worlds.
Most of the time I've seen GAF mention him has been positive. I'd be surprised if I saw otherwise, he's easily one of the nicest down to earth guys on twitch.
He's been called out for things before, tried to play off like a problem didn't exist, told what I could most charitably refer to as half-truths or said nothing at all, people wanted to move on because the game looked good. Seems congruous to me.
So let's pretend you can't substantiate the claims found online, find the duplicated files, get one of the subjects of the purported hate sites on the record -- whatever. There's enough that happened with this campaign that should raise flags about the dev's character. Why nobody in the press wanted to pay any attention to the Grant Kirkhope thing is beyond me.
Edit: as for when this information surfaced, I've been clear the campaign was a shit show for years. All I can tell you is people are paying attention now that the game's here.

While I totally understand that the non-removal of Jon Tron may turn off people from buying the game. I think it's important to think that you may have encouraged many white supremacists from X studios simply because you didn't know what they were except a name in the credits.
This is a different situation though, I know, I saw the whole shit storm and I saw that man who I appreciated digging deeper and doubling down constantly. This was publicly known and his removal from Y-L proved that his words had consequences. However I do not think his inclusion in the game should automatically penalize a whole group of people who worked hard on what seems to be a great game and may not share the same values than this piece of shit. (at least I hope.)

Hopefully the best case scenario where they patch the game later on to remove him will happen and change the minds of people refusing to buy the game for that reason alone, which is absolutely OK too.

And being none white shouldn't make it okay to be implied your diluting the gene pool. But JonTron did it and the devs let it be. And they can face those consequences too. Frankly the defense force for them is some lame ass bullshit. If you choose to say nothing in the face of blatant racism you don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. It's not like they are interested in defending the people JonTron called lesser, why should those same people buy their product?
