Stardew Valley for Nintendo Switch |OT| Starving for a Harvest

No, it's not daily, it uses an accelerated in game day-night cycle that's unaffected by real time. Think less Animal Crossing and more Minecraft/Terraria/Xenoblade time wise.

You'll be fine not checking in constantly, it doesn't do anything while the game is off.

Great! Thank you 👍🏻

Is there a reason I can't highlight some of the items in the crafting menu? For example I have a blueprint for a ring but when I got to the crafting menu to see what I need to make it, I'm unable to move the cursor on it, it just skips across to the next item or down to the inventory list.

The reason is that menu controls are broken right now. You can switch to pointer controls and move the cursor to the ring that way.

This has just become an issue for me and is baffling. Why didn't they just use the right stick cursor for the menus? It works at all other times than when you'd really need it.

How do you change to pointer controls

Untick the "Use Controller-Style Menus" box in the settings menu.

Yes it does :) its a charm playing it on a 12" tablet in the bed before nighttime! But I guess stardew valley in all forms and formats is a charm!

https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewVal...ade_touchcontrols_for_stardew_valley_so_that/

Lets not confuse things in an OT specifically about the Nintendo Switch version.

I've gotta say. I wasn't sure if I'd like this game, but now that I'm nearing the end of my first spring season I can safely say that it has its hooks deep into me. The core gameplay loop of trying to make each day as productive as possible is really addictive. Hours melt away while playing this in handheld mode.

I've played this game on PC and must say that it's unfortunately just 'okay'. For just one person to do a game of this scope is seriously impressive, but it also shows in the end product. It lacks the polish and shine that for example Friends of Mineral Town had. The characters in that game felt like different individuals in comparison to SV, where it was too apparent only one person had written the script. The atmosphere was lacking for a game in this genre also in comparison to FoMT, where I truly felt like I was in that little town. The Stardew town on the other hand never felt authentic or natural.

People may feel different about this game, but for me it doesn't really hold a candle on Natsume's older games. Which is a shame since I can imagine it being a perfect fit for handheld Switch.

I’ve got kind of a dumb question but I can’t figure it out. How do I actually PLANT a crop/seed? I look up how to online and it’s just guides on where to plant, not the actual buttons/tools needed. I can’t figure it out lol.

First clear land with axe (branches) / hammer (rocks) / sickle (grass / weeds), so it’s just tan dirt. Then, till the soil with the hoe so it’s darker brown soil. Finally, select your seed and plant into the tilled soil.

Y button is “use tool”. In settings, there’s are some options for showing which tile you’re targeting. Might be helpful since it’s kind of hard to read when you’re between two tiles sometimes.

Where do I get the hoe? I don’t think you start with it right?

You definitely start with a hoe. Maybe you trashed it by accident? I don’t know if that’s possible actually. Definitely don’t know how you would get a new one. If you lost it, probably just restart your game?

I'm going at a much more relaxed pace compared to when I tried this on Steam and I'm liking it so much better. Have a couple questions though: My plan right now is just to have about 20 crops growing (growing cauliflower right now) to try to save up for the backpack upgrade and then spend the rest of the day either fishing or mining. I think the mine should open up soon. Is there a way to get a weapon this early? I really want copper bars so I can upgrade my stuff.

I also want to build that bridge on the beach, but I'm running out of small wood to collect in the farm. Should I try to upgrade the ax first so I can chop down trees, or is there other ways to collect 300 wood early? Also - is the scarecrow worth the 50 wood investment, or should I save that for the bridge if wood is limited early on?

Thanks! Really enjoying this so far.

I think the bridge can wait, I would invest the wood elsewhere.

You can chop down trees anywhere except in the main town (plenty of wood in the mountain area and south of your farm!) Just remember to leave the growing trees! :p

You get a weapon for free when the mine opens. The adventure guild guy meets you inside.

Regular axe can chop trees. 10 hits to fell, 5 hits to break the stump. You only need to upgrade for the bigger 2x2 stumps and then the big logs.

Scarecrows are worthwhile, if only to keep your crop plots looking clean. Hate getting one hole in a field. >.>

The bridge leads to a part of the beach where you can make a lot of money
foraging shells and coral
though.

Yeah but I still feel that is a lower priority compared to investing in the farm, exploring, etc. It doesn't being any new gameplay elements and takes up time every day checking there, better for winter time I think.

I don't have an excel sheet to back it up but:

Keep investing in your farm's production.
Like, don't bother getting a coop, or a barn.

a coop costs 4000g. 4 chickens cost 3200g. An egg sells for 50g (depending on size and quality).
So for 7200g you'll get revenue of 200g a day.

That doesn't mean you should overstretch yourself with regards to farming either, as you'll need to grow your farm in accordance with your technical capabilities.
You don't want to be dropping to 1/3 energy each single day from watering your plants, that'll severely impede your progress in other areas of the game.

Like, stick with the "invest money in backpacks upgrades and seeds, grow your farm - use the time off to mine for ores, which you'll use to upgrade your tools to make you a more efficient farmer" loop at first.

Stuff like building a relationship can be done once your income's at a comfortable level. As soon as you can "mass produce" gems (like Diamonds, a universal like) and you optimize your gift making around making gifts on people's birthday, giving them items they love - you'll make much faster progress with the villagers than handing them daffodils in Spring 1.

!!!! Exactly!!! This is my 1st time playing and I'm thinking why the heck would I buy a coop before a BACKPACK?!?!?! You gave me limited inventory, you jerks!!! Even Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon give far more space!

Just build a couple chests to help with inventory. But yeah, they ask you to build a coop way too early. I don't really bother with animals at all until year 2.

Thanks guys. Apparently I was trying to cut down those huge stumps and just assumed the trees were locked behind the next upgrade as well. Got lots of wood and did the first 5 levels of the mine. What's your strategy for finding ore. Just try the colored rocks?

Don't bank on regular rocks dropping ore. They do periodically but it's simpler to just look for the rocks that guarantee they drop ore (copper, iron, etc.)

Started building a coop and close to getting started on bee houses. Is mining the best way to find coal until I have access to gold? I really need coal right now.

Also I know animals are less efficient than some other routes but I like my cute animals :D gonna get a barn asap.

You can craft a kiln to convert wood to coal but it’s kind of slow going.

In the frozen section of the mine (level 40-whatever), there are these little puffball enemies that often drop coal.

Have to go take care of somethings IRL, but I'm definitely hooked on this game. Had a very productive first 11 days or so. Got the 300 wood for the bridge, built 2 chests, did the first 5 levels of the mine, got the backpack upgrade, have some crops growing, and leveled fishing to 2. I'm going to hold off on building any relationships until my farm and skills are more established.

I have a few basic questions from my first few hours in the game:

1. How often do the coral and other things on the beach respawn? I don't want to waste time going down there every day if it's only every few days.

2. How do you guys manage your storage? I'm currently planning on keeping 1 of everything, so I'll need lots of space. I have a blue chest for all my fishing stuff and a brown chest for natural stuff like rocks and fiber. Have you found a good way to organize everything? Also, is there a list of things that we need *lots* of? I want to know which things I can sell down to 1, and which things I should keep stacks of.

3. Fishing is infinitely more fun than when I first tried it, which is a probably a combination of me getting more used to it and being level 2 instead of 0. Does anything else make it easier besides leveling, like bait and rods?

I usually don't hit the beach everyday, maybe a bit more often once I have some crab pots going there.

I keep different chests for different items. building materials, fish, food, etc. i try to keep at least 2 of all the common types of fish/food/etc., but not absolutely everything.

bait, rods and fishing tackle will definitely make fishing easier.

So about to do the first day for the third time

First time I didn't quiet understand how the energy guage worked so I barely used up any before wandering around town and didn't plan anything :V

Second time I was doing a lot better, met more people, accidentally clicked the arcade game in the tavern, was trying to quit the mini game and crash :|

So third times a charm?

Damn it. I couldn't find the location of the Flower Dance for the life of me. I spent the entire day looking for it and accomplished nothing.

Looks like my character may have missed out on his shot at finding love at the big dance.

Guess I'll go tend to my potato crops. Alone.

It's better that you missed it. First flower dance normally ends in rejection.

Are the controls awkward enough that I should wait for a patch or just say fuck it and but it when I get home?

I've had 0 issues with the controls. Remember that the - button brings up the journal. Also, go into the settings and make it so you can see where you're about to do an action.

This is probably a more important question but how are the story and characters? Not sure if I can motivate myself to play if I don’t like the town and it’s people

It felt awkward until I turned on the options that put a tile of where I was gonna swing my item. With that up my issues with the game went away completely.

While script is just okay, in fact while many aspects of the game are just okay, I've found that when you blend them all together and drop them wholesale into the tight seasonal structure it's absolutely gold. Like including the stuff the Natsume games never went ham on eg mine and dungeon, deeper RPG stuff, more interesting/edgy overarching narrative, etc.

Imo the sum feels like substantially greater than the parts, while the Natsume games felt like tight microcosms. They felt like a fraction of the "parts" that SV has, just executed slightly better. They never had staying power for me.

The town is decent, the characters are decent, but the design and intricacy of it and their lives is great. Really enhances it for me. I like how the gifting and relationship system works.

This is like one of the early Harvest Moon games (Back to Nature,...) where you only had like 3 slots in your backpack.

+It would be "jerk" because the game was made by one person only :D

+food that grants you +lvls of fishing for some ingame time. Especially useful for
legendary fish
