SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

Maturity, bitches.
too bad it uses the wrong SNES logo though (bottom O instead of top O aligned, no TM)

Well... there's a couple of things one could point out if one was being really picky, but as long as the icons are consistent with each other, that's all that really matters.

Though I always find it funny how people claim to be "OCD" when they really really aren't.

Just installed Hakchi and added 2 games which seem to have been sync'd.

I have, however, forgotten to dump the original Kernal before I did this.

...Have I fucked up???

:D yea ...another thing is one doesn't notice that anyway when it's crunched up all tiny on the screen in the end.

Man ..... they really should pop a window in the UI that you should backj-up your kernel. Force you or something! It seems a lot of people did not :(

I have mine in 12 different places I am so paranoid!

It automatically backs it up the first time. Check the /dump/ sub folder where you installed haxchi.

(Edit) didn't it? I'm almost certain the text said it was backing it up even after I had already manually done it before the first time. It needs the dumped kernel to patch after all.

Robin, thank you for your great work!
In these instructions you say not to use the web installer. Is there a reason for that? I modded the SNESC yesterday using the web installer and everything works fine. Should I do the procedure again?

The only reason I say not to use it is because it does what modern apps do and puts files in Document locations on your PC. It's much easier to deal with things when they're all in one central folder.

I lost my NES Mini one :(

Alright, finished with mine. Not gonna mess with it any further. I hand-sized each of the boxes, color-corrected everything, and tested every single game. It's organized, clean, and I love it.

Wait, is this using RetroArch? My main beef with it is dealing with the menus (which I should be an expert on by now, but...) so if everything shows up as the rest of the games on the snes mini do then that is something I may take a closer look at.

How do the Genesis and GBA games play/sound?

Is there a way to tell if a SNES Rom is NSTC or Pal? I have a folder from years ago with almost 800 SNES games but it doesn't say one way or another what region they are from.
The zip files of the games have (U) after the name, some have that plus (!). Not sure what that means.

Uh? A message pops up the first time you try to sync any settings or games telling you to back up your kernel.

Anyone done much analysis on how overclocking the emulated FX chips impacts framerate/performance? I'd be kinda interested to see to what extent it works on games like DOOM and Stunt Race FX.

You've giving yourself away here, bud.

Going to do my best not to witch hunt here, but obviously you should know what region your games come from, especially if you took the time to run them through goodsnes years ago.

Stunt Race FX is so nice. It seems there's an internal frame limiter of something around 15fps, but with the right settings you can get it to hit that pretty consistently.

I can't believe I can now play all these games on my TV with these controllers. I even have Mother 3 on this thing.

Thanks everyone for your hard work and your help!

Is there no USA version of Super Bomberman 3 or Micro Machines 2?

If so can anyone tell me which patch I should use for each? Don't have the means to check right now.

I had the driver issue a few pages back.
If you are stuck in the 5 steps window, you need to deactivate driver signature verification for your windows.

Ohh, thanks for the advice.

I tried doing the "Disable Signed Driver Enforcement" by restarting under troubleshooting mode. I switched Windows into Test Mode and tried it that way, too. I got hakchi to run as administrator, too.

Still problems. :/

I think the driver is installing through hakchi. After uninstalling CLV-S-SHVY from the device manager, I'm able to reinstall the driver and have it show up under devices. Though, still with the warning, and the status of "device cannot start. code 10"

This will happen if you have a corrupt box art image anywhere. Happened to me with Earthbound. Could not get the image to dump properly when I was shrinking thumbnails to fit more games. Once I replaced it then the GUI went back to full speed. Look for images that don’t show up and have a zigzag instead.

Do I win a prize for talking about my penis on the Internet???
So do games added with this hack run and look just as good as the 22 games pre-installed on the SNES mini? Im assuming it uses the minis own emulation software to run everything?

My US SNES Mini has a black background when you are in the game select screen.

My Japanese Super Famicom Mini version has the same background but in white instead of black.

I noticed a border had been made from the black one.

Anyone want me to upload the white image files from my Japanese mini so someone can create a white border?

He clarified this some pages back: the overmount line goes in line 1 and then you add a empty line underneath it with enter

Thanks for the extra info. Wish there was an easy tutorial for placing your custom borders. Do not want to softbrick my snes o_O. But I must install the custom Chrono Trigger border Robin64 whipped up for me.

Do you want my Super Famicom Mini ui background to make a border - its different than the US model.

It was actually this I used. Isn't the UI background quite blurry in comparison? But do please upload it!

Is there ever a reason not to compress any of the ROMs?

They don't always work compressed. 99% of the time they will but if you get a C7, try uncompressed. For example, my FFVI translation ROM only works uncompressed.

Ill grab it nd host it somewhere.

Ive given up on the borders myself. Soft bricked my unit and took me 3 hrs to get it back up and running.

Ive modded a NEW 3DS XL with the latest bootstrap but the bloody borders upload got the better of me :)

Don't feel bad, I must've soft-bricked my console near 30 times over the last week figuring things out, especially before hakchi was a thing and everything was manual.

I notice the file in your collection differs from the instructions. I followed them and entered down to line 2. Could that have caused the brick? In which case now I should try again with the proper file.

As I said to my SO, "I fell in love with the Mini SNES right out of the box, but after hacking it, I'm straight going to ask it to marry me".

Also, revisiting the games made me realize how shockingly and wildly varied in quality many of them are, whereas my memories of some of them are less extreme (one would think the opposite would be true! So to speak, I remember many games as being a 7 where they're more like 4's, and I remember many games as 8s when they're straight 10s's. Case in point: the Star Wars games are beautiful, but, frankly, pretty bad in terms of gameplay: continuous cheap shots, extremely spotty controls and collisions, and so on (even back then I liked the NES trilogy better, I should revisit it too). For the opposite example, I started replaying Demon's Crest yesterday and it's just so. fucking. good. Such an amazing game in all respects, completely ahead of its time with its secret routes and endings.

Ohhh so all I need to do is follow some ftp steps then? Should work out fine then yea? Ill report from home once im there :D

3 hrs to get borders working sounds like quite a bit of work tho!

It a work when you put in a work that makes the work!

I could reflash my kernal and run Hakchi again but it would never sync games.

Yup. I remember enjoying the 3 Star Wars games back then, and then trying them a few years ago and thinking to myself "wow, these games are really not good".

I don't understand the process for putting Retroarch on it. I went through OP's directions, but when I try to put Retroarch on, it pops up with that screen telling me to do the reset button and all that, and/or install the driver. Should I be installing Retroarch from its original kernel, or the custom kernel?
