Television Displays and Technology Thread: This is a fantasy based on OLED

Man all this firmware shenanigans really suck. What is wrong with LG??? Should I be on any specific firmware on my B7A?

Got a question for you guys. I came home to find that the power on all my devices connected to 1 power strip was gone. Not able to turn them on. All except 1, my B7 OLED. I just turned the strip off and on and they all worked again. How does that happen? Should I get a second surge protector?

I drove myself crazy about firmware for damn near 2 weeks before settling in on 04.31.10. Really annoying.
I was on 04.31.10 but that firmware has issues with smooth motion, I've discovered.

Watch this video at 60fps on your TV and you'll likely see the issue - the ball on top should be completely smooth going back and forth but, on firmware 04.31.10 and older, it's super juddery. It doesn't pop up too often in games but it was a real issue with Cuphead for some reason.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyvUIA7KUjc

The fix you'd want is whatever firmware comes between 4.31.10 and the new 5. whatever firmware which ruins black levels. The release in between there is just about the best one you can get.

For me, that's 04.31.20. I was on 04.31.20 (default that came with the TV), but the HDR Game Mode seemed dimmer than it should be or what it was prior to the last couple of patches according to folks. So I downgraded to .10 and everything has been well ever since.

Are you noticing any brightness concerns in your HDR Game Mode?

LG is weird with firmware updates. I was curious to see what is available, went to the US LG site and for the C7 it says 360.15 is the current update. When I check on my TV it doesn't even have 360.15 as a downloadable option (I'm on earlier firmware than 360.15). When I go to avs forum I see the LG Korean site has firmware 360.25 available. Some people say the firmware will work fine but I'm scared to download firmware from the korean lg website if it'll brick my tv.

The latest official firmware for the B6 is still a winner, as it improves motion and indeed reduces noise while improving shadow detail. I only see raised blacks on HDR material and DV, and given the improvements, I can live with that.

How do you peeps wipe off dust from your TVs? I'm scared of micro-scratches and stuff so no clue what to use, I guess microfiber and just hope for the best but I've seen microfiber just spread dirt on computer monitors in past.
I'll try to avoid cleaning it as long as I can but these things attract dust a lot.

Micro fiber cloth and distilled water.. as long as it's glass and not a fragile coating like the old kuros it should be fine.

not all the Oleds are glass .... Such as the C7 ..............

Microfiber and distilled water was the recommended cleaning method for the Kuro line and it was fragile as hell. It'll still be a legit method, just use caution not to push obvious debris around and make sure the cloth is clean.

I could have worded the initial post better. I avoided cleaning my Kuro unless I just really had to, and I forbid our cleaning lady from even making eye contact with it.

For those with a B7 or maybe even other OLEDs, is there a cover for the part that the stand screws into? I just wall mounted and I'm left with an empty space that looks like it should have a cover. Not sure if I have one

Yes, it's the white plastic that was included in the same box where the remote was.

Posted in movie thread, but will double post here

Amazon is having a UHD promotion -- Buy 3 UHD movies for $49.99. Over 100 to choose from.

I already had 10, just copped 6 more with the promotion. May use this to fill out the collection some more later this week.

Had to double check and dig into the box but I found it. Thanks!

Also I found a good full motion mount for OLED TVs from monoprice that I'll post later. The arms that attach to the tv are shorter so that it doesn't extend past the plastic area into the OLED panel

So after being informed by dark10x that 04.31.10 that I downgraded to has issues handling motion, I moved back up to 04.31.20, which was the original firmware I was on

HDR Game Mode still looks great. I think my original problem was basing the difference of standard HDR vs HDR Game Mode using Madden 18 where it is noticeably darker for whatever reason. My other games don't have THAT drastic of a difference, so I'm going to chalk it up to something with Madden. GT Sport has the best implementation I've seen of HDR and it looks incredible in HDR Game Mode.

Watched some Youtube 4k videos and they looked really good. Hopefully YT HDR support gets added to the app soon, but even standard 1080p videos looked good.

What doesn't look all that good is 720p. Fucking ESPN, ABC, and Fox bringing everybody down. How they continue to broadcast in this archaic resolution is beyond me, it looked bad years ago, and worse now.

Can confirm on my C7, GT Sport looks amazing (yes, in Game mode). Can't wait to give the demo a whirl tomorrow.

I have done some more testing with HDR modes on the C7, and came to the conclusion that standard doesn't look great. Despite being able to see the highlight details, it looks somewhat blown out. HDR Game looks similar to Cinema with the same settings. However, dynamic contrast works differently on the two. In order to preserve shadow detail it's best left off on Game mode. It looks good on Cinema mode and should be left enabled for that mode.

Wait, what? I thought everyone was saying to avoid it.

I have always just used a cloth used for polishing cars, without anything on it. water if I had to get a bad smudge off. My Kuro is still scratch free after 10 years.

Well, the thought is to avoid it because of the negatives that holygeesus pointed out. He just thinks the positives outweigh those in his view.

Ahh... well I guess I’m just going to stay on 4.31.20 for now at least. By the way, what settings did you end up using? I’ve been using DF’s, but thinking about revisiting them.

I used DF as a baseline for SDR and HDR Gaming, but then I found a post on B6 thread on AVS and decided to go with it:

SDR Game

OLED Light - 52
Contrast - 78
Brightness - 50
Sharpness - 10
Color - 55
Color Temp - W25
Dynamic Contrast and Dynamic Color - OFF

HDR Game

OLED Light - 100
Contrast - 99
Brightness - 51
Sharpness - 10
Color - 60
Color Temp - W20
Dynamic Contrast - Low or OFF
Dynamic Color - OFF
Color Gamut - Wide (game dependent)
Super Res - OFF

For me those settings help compensate for the dip in brightness from say HDR Bright to HDR Game. To my eyes, it's above HDR Standard. Stuff like color gamut I leave at Wide for games, but that's a just a preference and as I mentioned the HDR Game Mode settings are based off what I saw from AVS. I've been satisfied with it.

Thanks, I’ll give these a shot. I want to make sure my picture is as good as possible for when the Xbox X launches.

Yeah exactly. You have to unfortunately compromise with any firmware you choose, it seems. Given 95% of the stuff I watch is SDR I can live with HDR being a little screwy for now, as I only notice the issue in a pitch black room with a completely dark screen.

No, HDR Game Mode is identical between 4.31.10 and 4.31.25. Zero difference. Both are slightly dimmer than I'd like, though, but it's always been that way since HDR Game Mode was introduced in Europe earlier this year.

Anyone hyped for glasses free 3D called Ultra-D? It almost seems too good to be true, but mass production started this year and I guess we will see consumer products soon...

More info here: http://movebeyond3d.com

I will wait for tech like this before updating my 3D OLED 1080p TV... I like my 3D Blu-Rays too much!

I just have my B6 disconnected from the internet and that should be enough, right? That way no firmware can be pushed. Sucks though because now I can't watch DV content.

I said this before in this thread - but I'm very please with in the latest B6 firmware (i'm in EU if it matters). I do not see any practical difference between HDR standard and HDR game (tried with Resogun PS4 base model, Forza 7 on PC). I also do not have any "glowing black" issues, I veiried this in a completely dark room, no difference tv off or on. No judder issues either.

YMMV of course, but you could try it out, I believe rolling back is possible (haven't tried it myself)

Reading this thread is terrifying. Please help!

I'm thinking about getting the LG OLED55B7V 55.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XVMNVD5/

So to start, should i get this? Should i be looking at something else for a good 2017 OLED?

If i get this, what should i do, what shouldn't i do?

Id always just update to the latest firmware. I shouldn't?

For other background info, i would have this connected to a Denon AVR-X2400h AV receiver and a PS4 Pro.

Any help super appreciated, i don't want to shell out £1800 to then figure out i made a bad decision,

Damn now you got me curious. What is the latest one? Because last time I did check, a month ago or so there was no new update in Holland.

Or you can just disable automatic firmware updates and just decline to update when you turn the TV on?

Oh I did that right away but i read that it can happen you can eventually can't even decline the update prompt anymore?

It's pretty easy to go back and forth between firmware as long as you have the file, anyway. It still pushes to me, but I always cancel it. Should probably look into blocking it on my router.

It's 05.30.03, latest one available in Finland. I just tried the new Gran Turismo demo on my (base) PS4 and HDR seems to look fine.

I tried to compare HDR Game with HDR Standard and it's maybe very slighty dimmer, I'm using the Digital Foundry video settings for the picture.

What’s the best hdmi cable to use on the OLED C7 to hook my PS4 pro to it? I’ve seen some super expensive ones but are those really worth it? Or do you get the same quality from other not so expensive brands?

What's wrong with the cable that came with Pro? Did it break?I use it and it's worked fine.

For the love of god, don't do the upgrade on a whim (the downgrade process is quite involved) unless you're ok with the potential for raised blacks. Unlike the experience of yourself and another user who said they can't see elevated blacks in SDR content, myself (and many on AVS forum) are suffering from raised blacks with no way of getting zero blacks with this firmware.

Granted, IF the trade off is better motion and improved shadow detail/less noise near black, then MAYBE this 'upgrade' was worth it but without something to compare it to, these minor improvements are impossible to verify (whereas my disappeared 0 blacks are easy to check).

At the very least, LG should have provided update notes detailing these changes before pushing an automatic update that removes a selling point of the tv.
