RPCS3 (PS3 Emulator) Introduces high resolution rendering support

It's interesting that you can see some of the tricks that are hidden at 720p, like the bushes next to the character in Ni No Kuni changing models three times as the player approaches.

When Dark Souls was first ported to PC, From had this super low res Depth of Field effect that looked really good on PS3, but ended up looking terrible even at 1080p. The game was locked to 30 FPS at the time so people were even pushing 4K way back then.

Amazing. Some games could really benefit from this like Max Anarchy, which I'm pretty sure rendered at 240p on PS3. Can't wait to play a proper HD version of MGS4 too

Zoomed in and cropped screens do that, even on PS4/XB1 games.

I still have my PS3 hooked up to a 24''1080p monitor and last week played Persona 5 (probably not the best game to judge considering it's last-gen roots) and to my eyes it didn't look too far off from me playing Persona 5 on the PS4 on a 55'' 4K TV when it first came out.

Subnative vs subnative. It's no surprise a 1080p game looks shitty on a 55'' 4k tv.

This looks fantastic. Might be time to replay Demon's Souls soon since I don't wanna bring out my PS3 anymore. Does it run okay nowadays on RPCS3?

It's interesting to see how much detail is lost at lower resolutions. Emulators only do to games (and gamers) a huge favor. Amazing progress!

when is this out? the blogpost makes it seem like it's in the latest version, but the latest build on the site doesn't have it. maybe it's only available for backers for a couple of days, cemu style?
of course it got updated since I looked at it an hour ago :D

ignore this post!

Higher resolutions breaking illusions like that is actually one of the things that stands out more and more to me over time. I kinda hate it, but not to the point where I'd rather play that generation's games in their original resolutions. In some cases it's fixable (like the Dark Souls DOF effect you mention), in others it's just straight-up asset work.

It's in the latest version. You configure it under the GPU tab of Settings.

...PS3 didn't look like that on TVs in those beforeshots, did they? Or is my memory really that bad? I'm not even that much of a graphics snob but you would think games are allergic to anti-aliasing
The left side is not 1:1 with PS3 since left side is also RPCS3 just locked to 720p.

For accuracy sake comparing to PS3 directly would be cool to see but seems people sold off their PS3's lol

It's 1:1 in that that's the image you'd get if you were playing at a native resolution on a 4k display.

why wont anyone put up higher res t6 or TTT2 screenies? I would love to see those games in a super high or even acceptable res like 1080p

IIRC Demons ran at 720p with no AA, so its pretty accurate.

.

so awesome

Yakuza 2 actually has a weird border problem like this on PCSX2. I didn't notice that border playing actual Y3 on a PS3 though.

Need to buy a drive or old PS3 and rip my library now! Seriously impressive, even if my CPU probably can't run anything at higher than 15 FPS

It's weird how some games (like Souls) seem to hide loads of detail which is unearthed at 4K, whereas other games gain virtually nothing from 4K (Bioshock, which I recently replayed).

No No Kuni looks even more stunning!!

This is the one damn game we need on PS4 Pro and Steam. The game looked fugly as all hell when I tried the demo. I deleted it full well knowing someday I would play it like it was meant to be played. Those jaggies were so bad.

and this is why 4K assets kinda don't really exist. the texture work is primarly here, but can't be shown as the hardware wasn't capable.

Maybe if the sales for NNK2 on pc are good. One can hope...

The amount of progress they've been making with this is very impressive.
There's obviously still a long way to go before performance and compatibility are where they need to be, but higher resolutions and improved texture filtering makes such a difference to the look of these games.

This is an incredible progress rpcs3 team has achieved.

Man, so many games were made with great textures which now can be seen properly.

This is really awesome and I will sooner or later try out Demons Souls on pc.

Would be so awesome if they could get red dead working well. I'd love to play it at 1080p before RDR2 drops.
