I feel like I have to dig through too much shit to occasionally find a diamond. Rap is wack now. Everything has been said already. The beats keep getting better but the lyrics are getting worse. Even underground stuff is played out; there's no originality.

I think because I just grew up with the GOATs from the 80s/90s, now nothing can compare.

I think most of it has been terrible, or pop music parading as hip-hop. Maybe I'm old and the genre has expanded. I just know I like very, very little of it.

To Pimp A Butterfly is the greatest hip-hop albem ever for me, but that is also the same albem that got me into hip-hop in the first place, so maybe that's not the most unbiased opinion.

I try to get into hip-hop of the past but I find it pretty difficult.

Had a conversation with someone yesterday about some trends/styles. These vids sum it up:

That said, i still like a lot of stuff these days.

Hip hop was not in a great state in the mid 2000s. It was a little stagnant. Not to sound like some underground douche, but the mainstream was bad. But their were some great artists such as MF DOOM, Madlib, Edan, Kanye, EL-P, Aesop Rock, and many others. But hip hop was far from thriving in my opinion.
Hip hop is in a much better state now. The experimentation is so wonderful. My favorite hip hop act currently is Death Grips. They are a bit of a meme for sure, but they live up to the hype. They are pushing the boundaries of what hip hop is, and they are doing it like ive never seen before. Seriously, if you havent listened to them, please do so. Even if you dont like their sound, im sure you will respect it.
Also, artists such as Shabazz Palaces, clipping., Milo, Open Mike Eagle, and many others are pushing boundaries.
And how can you say hip hop sucks today when we ALSO have Kendrick, Danny Brown, and Freddie Gibbs??
Say what you want about the mainstream hip hop, but many people enjoy it. Hell, i dont mind artists such as Future, Young Thug, Drake, etc. They serve their purpose.
Sorry for rambling lol, but i feel very strongly about this subject. I could go on all day, but i wont bore you guys.

Edit: just for fun, ill say who i think the best rappers in the game are currently.

1. Kendrick.
2. MC Ride (Yes im serious. Read into his lyrics and listen to his flows if you dont believe me).
3. Freddie gibbs.

The thing about No Words is that despite being a joke song, it's far more entertaining than the self-righteous preachy nonsense that comprises Hopsin's discography.

Mainstream/radio rap is just terrible IMO. Its obvious as hell that Black people aren't ultimately the gatekeepers for what gets put on airwaves or else we'd see more socially relevant stuff. There's less variety in acts compared to the 90s and less variety in the messaging. Burn it to the ground, the underground is where its at.

I'm no expert in hip hop but that's kind of how I feel. There have certainly been artists I've resonated with during my now 4 year foray into rap that came from the last decade, but overwhelmingly they have been from the decade before that (or rather 90's to 2005ish).

It is currently in a fantastic place and if you don't think so you're either old or out of touch.
And that's fine but leave the rest of us alone with your lame bitter opinions.

I think it was both the best and worst decade for hip hop. A lot of innovators and true artistic geniuses making mainstream money. Also sooooo much copycat bullshit that I forget a month later. Obviously it's always been a thing, but now that rap IS the mainstream it doesn't take very long for every song to sound almost identical.

Still personal and creative artists are finding a way to get their sound out there.

Drake's better than ever, Gucci's still got it, Danny Brown's going ape shit, Vince Staples killing it, Big Sean just dropped his best album, dudes like 21 Savage, Stitches, and Young Thug are a lot of fun

I gotta say that I'm very pleased.

If you only listen to hip hop on the radio, you'd think it's pretty terrible. If you listened to the vast selection of current artists new and old, cranking out hits left and right on other mediums then you'd know hip hop is doing quite well this decade.

Hip Hop is bigger than ever. To me there is a lot of wackness in the mainstream (Drake for example...), especially with the message, which is promoting a kind of lifestyle that not only spreads negativity but also perpetuates a shed load of negative stereotypes, and weak egos.

However, there are lots of dope rappers out there, killing it.

I listen to a quite a lot of trap/lightfeet/Footwork though...That is also hiphop. Some dope stuff going on there...

Hip hop reached it's peak artistically and creatively in the 90s.

After that there have been a few artist here and there that were decent but as a collective whole the genre is pretty much dead and 2017 was pretty much another doo doo year that helped solidify that.

The biggest artist out right now is Cardi B and The Cash Me outside girl, nothing more needs to be said.

LOL

That just shows that you don't know what you're talking about. It's a new golden age for Hip-Hop right now. And no, I'm not going to give you recommendations. You got the whole internet at your disposal, but probably decided to stay in "Only Real Hip-Hop" groups on Facebook where people only share 90's Rap and post memes about Mumble Rap.

The biggest artists in Hip-Hop were Kris Kross and Vanilla Ice at one point in the 90's. Guess 90's Rap sucked too.

Yeah those aren’t the biggest artists so I am almost 100% you do not listen to rap, which explains why you think it stopped being creative in the 90’s . . .

Also I missed this statement at first but Rap/Hip-Hop is the most popular genre now . . . not dead at all

In terms of album releases, this year has been the best in a long time. If you don't see that, you're not interested in hip hop.

I’d say this might be true if you stay away from the songs that chart on billboard.

The radio and popular hip is as bad or worse than it’s ever been, but there is more music easily available elsewhere than ever before, too, so it kind of balances out. But if you made a mixtape of all the too 10 billboard hip hop songs of the last decade it would (probably) mostly be trash.

(I’m sort of curious to see what it would like actually).

Yeah I don't know if Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition, or Death Grips' entire existence could have happened in the 90s. And even if Cardi B/Cash Me Outside were the biggest artists out, so? Just pass on it. Find the good stuff. There's tons of it.

Why bring billboard into it? Who cares? Top 40 has rarely been a pillar of quality even if it is entertaining. And Cardi B is nothing if not entertaining, mind you.

There have been as many good hip hop albums as there are weeks so far in this year. And they are very easy to find thanks to digital services. So if you're truly a fan of the genre, do yourself a favor and go do some minimal searching, seek out quality critics like Dead End Hip Hop and enjoy one of the best years in the history of the genre.

I stopped listening to hiphop around 10 years ago or maybe a little longer. So that’s what I think about hiphop the last 10 years

The only artists I've added to my playlists over the last few years are Joey Badass, Liknuts and Czarface. Two out of those three are 90's supergroups.

I dont really listen yo as much hip hop that's coming out nowadays.

Hip hop is youth culture, they're not making music for people like me.

I may not like or understand the newer guys, but let them get their money.

For every yachty and thug there's still a dusty 90s, hardcore gangster, old school hip hop album still being made today. The Internet let's me avoid all the new trendy stuff and listen to what i like.

Some good producers and artists still but it’s more about singles now. It’s cool if you’re willing to find more underground stuff but popular rap is mostly pretty bad.

My opinion is...I don't really have one. I don't have the time I once did to invest in scouring the land for good music. That leaves me in the unfortunate predicament of being a slave to the mainstream, of which I can't say I enjoy much of thus far. And that's not a "because it's pop" diss, it just mostly sounds boring. There are obvious standouts though.

My commutes are mostly NPR these days...haha!
