Colin Kaepernick and President Trump should be the ones uniting our country together. Wait...what? I know it sounds crazy, but maybe that's exactly what we need to see. Maybe that's how we start to heal. Two men sit in a room and talk, simple as that.

Sure, let's just wait for Donald Trump to sit down with Colin Kaepernick, and also for him to not do or say something insulting or outright racist in that sit-down to make the situation 10 times more contentious.

He is right about the American obsession with "winning" and "victory or death" having seeped deeply into the American psychology to the point that the concept of dialog is almost completely corrupted for many, perhaps even most, Americans.

However, the problem here is that for one of the "sides" in America this isn't a bug, it's a feature. You can't strive to recover a lost sense of "good faith" with people who see good faith as weakness. Who desire an authoritarian society where one group (theirs) has crushed all opposition.

I agree nuance is required. What would you call cops that see police brutality but keep their mouths shut about it. Refuse to speak out about it. Value their own employment over the murder of other human beings? It's called a blue wall. Until the police decide to crack it themselves in order to remove the rot they are complicit. Sorry if I chose a side.

Republicans aren't Nazi's or White Supremacists. It's just too many of them are completelly indifferent about them.

It's not that I hate "the right" it's just I hate the fact that mofos hate my guts and seek to push back against it. If folks were half as outraged at police brutality as they are at Kaepernick this wouldn't be a problem in America anymore.

I think it's pretty obvious that Boyer is a well-meaning Republican whose good intentions are drowning in a sea of ignorance born of a lifetime spent in a conservative cultural bubble. He needs to do a lot more research on this topic if he wants to discuss it with any authority. This is about people's lives. He doesn't get it.

The reason for the division is that Donald Trump and his followers are real threats to the country and the world.

To put CK and Trump on the same plane is honestly absurd. It's a protester and player vs the fucking president.

The people upset at flag kneeling agree that police brutality is a problem or not? It's not really a two sides problem.

There shouldn't have to be a compromise between delusion and reality. That's ultimately the issue. One side is delusional and the other can't compromise with delusion because it's absurd

The problem is the other side thinks you're delusional, that police brutality isnt even a problem in the first place. That Kap's narrative is not supported by evidence. That it's all political. Believe my I argue with my family about this day in and day out.

Trump should in no way be compared to Kaepernick here. Trump is the President, his job is to unite the country. He is failing about as much as you could at that task. Trump basically called him and everyone else kneeling a son of a bitch. Those are not the words of someone that has any interesting into getting to the bottom of how to fix the issue that the players are kneeling for.

Any letter that doesn't put a majority of the blame on the President for this one isn't a letter I can get behind.

Are they supporting white supremacy or freedom of speech is the question? Hate speech is not ok and freedom is speech is, but unfortunatly they share a grey line and there is not law saying hate speech is illeagal in the US as of yet, at least that I know of. I also understand why Kaepernick takes a knee. This topic has been in your face to the general public for weeks now.

It's not just my family though. It's a large swath of this country. My family is from a deep blue state. They aren't typical ignorant uneducated rednecks. I mean yea I think they are racist too but they kind of don't fit the profile of a typical Trump supporter.

But they are white and privileged so I guess they got that going for them. But don't even broach that topic with them because they will treat you with nothing but contempt and ridicule

America has a long history of compromise and finding the middle ground. Just look at the Declaration of Some Independence, If That Is OK With His Highness The King:

When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with one another, they should take a step back and consider the other side's feelings, too. Taxes aren't really that bad, and we probably shouldn't have disrespected the British troops by throwing all that tea away. There is a time and a place for proper protest after all.

We hold these truths to be self evident, as long as everyone agree to them, that all men are created equal, that there are good people on both sides, nice people, endowed by their creator* (the Christian capital G god, of course) with certain rights which are alienable under the right circumstances. Also corporations should be people too, best not to leave them out.
