Obesity among US adults reaches all-time high, 40% of adults and 19% of kids

Just because Obesity becomes the majority does not mean it is the 'standard' especially when the rest of the world isn't as obese. Additionally, it's this thinking that is the danger. That America is pretyy much fat, accept it and move on.

No matter what you say, what you pretend fat acceptance is, you are pretty much asking people to pretend everything is fine. "Please don't draw attention to the fact an obese person is obese". Obesity is the #1 cause of preventable death. We threaten to involve child protective services if people don't vaccinate their kids but won't ever imagine doing the same to obese children whose parents have pretty much doomed them to a lifetime of mental and physical health problems.

I mean what is your end goal then?

You can pretend that you think you know what fat acceptance is, but that doesn't mean that you're right. You can draw very odd parallels to vaccines but that doesn't mean that you understand what you're talking about.

Treat people with respect. Is that such a hard concept? Let me tell you a secret, overweight people know that they're heavy, people never let them forget it. Ever.

Let me ask you a few questions. How would you solve the food desert issue?. Tell me. I want a clear and concise answer for accessible food options. How would you solve the transportation issue in the US which makes going to the grocery store very difficult for low-income communities? How would you solve health care? So people can meet with a doctor and a nutritionist to find a plan that works for them.

We've known about America's problems with obesity for a long time now and we do nothing to address the structural effects that lead people into choosing (if they even have a choice, if they have a grocery store where they live) less than stellar options.

Shaming doesn't do anything. Support, now that's different. That would take some effort. But most people choose to address the problem with obesity with shame and the problem will never get solved.

Diet, lack of exercise, also normalizing obesity contributes a lot. Saying it's ok or not trying to hurt someone's feelings makes it worse. I have fat friends back home, and when I meet them I ask how they are eating and how their regimen has been going. I don't avoid it because it shows I care about them.
^^^like cyframe said. Be supportive
Also, they rarely have sugar in anything around asia. Just salt, vegetables, and much smaller portions.

We need to ask Asians for their secret.

We already did. There was no secret. Stop putting whatever garbage into your mouth and eat more vegetables.

Truth be told, 90% of the restaurants in the US are carb/salt/sugar loaded fried bread garbage. It would take a complete reinvention of the American diet to even begin to curb this.

In summation, 'You Americans lack discipline'

It's interesting that talking about obese people is some fine line you have to walk. One that we've already learned to deal with when dealing with smokers or alcoholics. You don't see too many obese people past the age of 60. Heart disease is right up there with lung cancer. We need education and regulation with the food we consume.

Being obese should never be normalized.

The problem with the fat acceptance movement is it spreads a bunch of fake facts like set points, starvation mode, HAES etc.

This enables self destructive behavior.

there's so many misunderstandings, junk science and bad information about diet and nutrition in this thread alone. Hell, there's a whole multi-million dollar industry spreading misinformation and profiting from our ignorance through fad diets and weight-loss pills. Nutritional education is just so fucking bad right now and I don't think fat acceptance movements are anywhere the cause nor the priority concern if you deem a contributing factor to the state of things.

I see your point though but fat acceptance is simply boils down to "don't treat me like shit because I'm fat" which doesn't read to me as "I'm fat and healthy and everything is fine!" HAES is kind of it's own thing entirely beyond that but of course there is overlap. And I mean isn't that type of shit a consequence of ostracizing fat people and not the cause?

I literally no nothing about eating healthy ...... I'm 32 years old

I don't know how to cook, I've done it a few times and I know how to bake, I can make brownies and follow recipes, but I hate cooking meat, and sometimes with foods i use the meat thermometer.

Here's the problem in this thread alone

Eat your fruits and Vegetables - WHAT fucking fruits and vegetables, all i ever hear is how my favorite fruits and vegetables are bad for me and NOT to eat them. My favorite Fruits are in this order

Apples
Grapes
Oranges
Pineapple
Banana's
Watermelon
Strawberries

Like all of those are supposedly loaded with sugar and "bad" for you. Orange juice makes your insulin level's spike, even the pure shit, so everything I read says they are terrible for you.

The list of vegetables I like is quite small

Things I can eat by themselves
Carrots
Cucumbers
Potato
Sweet Potato
Corn

Everything else needs some kind of dressing or only really works in salad, thinks Like onions and tomatoes.

Then I'm told red meat is bad for you, but Steak and shit is full of protein, so what am I supposed to eat for protein when I go to the gym? I already eat a TON of chicken, but there's only so much I can eat before I get sick of it. I don't even really want to eat a ton of cards but I try to.

I have no clue where cheese fits in the equation, on a keto diet it's recommended, everywhere else its bad for you, Milk/Chocolate milk after a workout has been proven to help weight loss, but guess what, everyone says milk is bad for you. Are eggs safe to eat again? They were, then they weren't, but now they are again i hear.

Let's not mention the fact that the few times i have tried recipes out of a book or off the internet it's taken a 1/2 hour to an hour, and guess what, it was more expensive than just eating out. Panera bread is $24 for me and my girlfriend, the recipe we saw online was almost $25 to make just to feed us.

If im losing weight do I cut out carbs, do I eat protein, do I eat low GI carbs, is Peanut Butter good or bad?

I've literally read TONS of books, and I'm still confused sometimes, and this is just on eating alone.

Have you ever tried reading a book on weightloss ? the only common thing i can find among most people is that "it starts in the kitchen", but guess what I'm a bigger guy, should i be doing cardio ? well according to starting strength dont do cardio because you lost weight by building muscle. Should I be on the treadmill, or on the elliptical for hours at a time, or should I just do HIIT which is what "really burns fat" and not waste my 2 - 3 hours of free time a day on a treadmill, which quite frankly sucks. Don't even get me started on deciphering what's just "bro" science, and what actually works. Then theres the fact that I have a bum knee so just doing some class, or "running" on the treadmill isn't an option.

I'm not an idiot either, or at least I like to think I'm not, I have a college degree, and generally do my research on shit, but every time i do research I end up more confused on weight loss than ever, and have no idea which idea to follow. There's only so much cooking I am capable of, and normally if i do buy groceries and cook it only lasts about a week or so, then the next week I'm out of recipes.

Not to mention the fact that my job has me driving a couple of hours a day, so if i get hungry while I'm out driving what am i supposed to do? I am NOT the type of person that can just prepare a weeks worth of meals and then have something while I'm driving. I try to make healthier choices, like boiled eggs at the gas station, or something with alot of protein and no carbs, but sometimes your options are VERY limited.

I think it all comes down to education. I hovered around the 30 BMI level for most of my 20s - which is borderline obese - and I hated it. And I couldn't understand it. I thought "I'm just a fat person, that's just how it is." And as I lived in a very slim community (about 5 people in my class of 74 were overweight in high school) it really made me feel like shit.

When I was 21 I dieted and exercised like a motherfucker and lost tons of weight (230 to 180 pounds) but I put it all back on immediately and didn't understand why. I didn't even understand why I'd lost it in the first place, other that 'less eating + more exercise = weight loss', but it wasn't a permanent thing, I thought I could lose the weight and then that was it, job done.

Where everything changed was when I finally discovered what calories actually were when I was about 27. Until then I thought a calorie was like a vitamin, or a protein or a carb. Just something that was in food that was bad for you.

It was only when I read that calories meant 'the energy the food gives you', and crucially - that 3500 calories above or below your daily energy expenditure means a pound of weight gained or lost that everything suddenly clicked. For the first time I felt in control of my eating. I could say "I'll eat a deficit of 500 calories under my TDEE a day and I should lose X pounds in two months..." and BAM, it would happen, just as predicted, whether the calories were ice cream and brownies or meat and potatoes. From then on I have NEVER struggled with my weight the same way, ever again. Sure, I put on some weight here or there due to drinking or socialising too much, but I understand exactly what calories I'm putting into my body so when the scale reads 5lbs heavier I know exactly where it came from and I know without doubt that I can run my 500 calorie deficit and shed it in no time.

To contrast, in my 20s I drank 2 litres of coke every day - and while I knew it was bad for me I had no idea WHY. What the maths were. What an outrageous amount of liquid calories I was taking in. I had no idea what I was doing to my body, at all. And I really feel that so many people are the same, and the fact that this isn't something taught in school (or at least I don't think it is) is really shocking considering the current crisis.

I really believe if we educated everyone about this from primary school onwards we could make a huge difference.

This was me in my 20s. No idea what to believe, head was spinning, trying and failing all this fad shit. Then I tatooed 3500 calories = 1 pound in my brain, and now I've been 6'1, 180 lbs (healthy weight) for the bulk of the last couple years. And it feels great.

I ignore almost all health advice now. I just watch my calories, my nutrients, and now that I'm a bit more advanced I watch my macros too. And I've never been healthier. I did 6 months without dieting and only put on 2 lbs, eating about 2,400 calories a day of whatever I wanted. I was last sick 3 years ago. Life is good.

EDIT: Also, even when I'm dieting I have a rule - don't cook anything that takes more than 10 minutes. Unless you're a foodie you'll never stick to a routine that takes more than that.

If you're talking about weight loss it's as simple as calories in vs calories burned. Healthy eating is another subject but is basically just a good balance of things.

I roll my eyes every time a poster blame their toxic food culture and week minds on "work life balance!""no access to healthy food!" Bullsh*t. Asian Americans live in the same country as you blacks and whites and latinos and they do much better than you. Stop blaming outside factors and start cutting your junk food.

Why don't try not eating, when you get hungry driving. Your hunger is purely psychological, show some self control and ignore it.

You want to lose weight? Eat things that contains roughly 100 kcal per 100 grams. You can then eat about two to three kilos of food or day.

Def need to get back in shape like how I was a couple years ago. Exercising is whatever but calorie deficits are rough, especially cutting out alcohol.

Yep. I was walking to work the other day and someone from a car yelled "You are so fucking fat" at me.

And i've been counting calories and losing weight!!!

I hope this doesn't sound like fat shaming, but as someone who was 295 at my peak, and have been maintaining 165 for 10 years: you can't lose weight until you stop making excuses for yourself. I'm not gonna say it's easy, it was the most challenging thing I've done. And losing weight isn't even the hardest part, maintaining is even harder.

Best of luck to everyone trying to lose weight.

I don't even see how we can solve this outside of educating people. How's the rest of the world fighting this problem?

In Holland, we don't have see fast food as a meal, but something to indulge in ever so often. Also, our XL packages are your M packed for basically everything.

We also bike a lot, and sport is something you for fun, with lots of kids growing up with a team sport.

ALso, in general we like to cook so a large % of meals is home-prepped. Health is a pretty big proponent of our society, so you see a lot of healthy alternatives to junkfood in the streets and supermarkets.

Obesity in the Netherlands is rising, it is practically the same percentage as the US (40% adults, 14% kids). Neighboring countries like Belgium have the same issue.

I'm a 33 year old Millennial, and in the span of less 2 years, I've went from someone who eat chicken tenders DAILY to a mostly vegan diet/life style. It is very much possible. I have lost 60 pounds as a result from my peak.

According to my sources, 14% of our adult populace is obese, while 49% has overweight. Higher numbers then I expected! I guess my community is warping my views a bit.

I am super obese and there is literally nothing i can do about it.

I just find that hard to believe

You can always change your diet and do exercise.

If you had poached eggs and avocado for breakfast
Lunch salad no dressing and a small amount of smoked fish over the top of it
Dinner steamed chicken breast and broccoli

Snack a hand full of unsalted mixed nuts

Yeah the meals are boring but it’s better than the alternative

If you are genuinly interested how the rest of the world is doing (short answer: better then USA but definitely not good) you can read this:

I am NOT the type of person that can just prepare a weeks worth of meals and then have something while I'm driving. I try to make healthier choices, like boiled eggs at the gas station, or something with alot of protein and no carbs, but sometimes your options are VERY limited.

I'v never heard that you shouldn't eat apples (etc.) because of sugar? Where is that advice from?

Is there a good documentary or similar that shows how a person can eat their way to obesity?
I always had a really hard time understanding (me personally I'm trying to gain some weight at the moment to complement my work-out plan, filling myself up with milk/peanut butter/bananas etc. and it's barely doing anything).

If you are genuinly interested how the rest of the world is doing (short answer: better then USA but definitely not good) you can read this:

http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(17)32129-3/fulltext?elsca1=tlpr

One good example to the second question:

I want to thank you for this post. Especially the WHO article nudged me to learn more about the complex issues determining our health and how to approach them. I got my sunday reading sorted out.

I think this is a good thread to share my success story. Earlier this year I weighed the most I have ever weighed in my life (209 lbs) but didn't realize it. I was fooling myself I guess. It took a close friend to open my eyes. He asked me why I am so fat and it blew my mind because I thought I was the same ol same ol. Well, since then, I've worked out every single day at least 1-3 hours/day and I'm happy to say that I am glad he said that. That's what friends are for. I'm still the same weight but I bet if they tested my body fat levels before and after, I would see an improvement.

It’s a nuanced problem, but its core is a meat based diet. Sugar is right up there, but animal protein should not be central to diet. A burger is a treat, not everyday food.

Probably someobe got confused about excess sugar, and/or fruit juices. The body needs sugar, but you also don't want to eat all the fruit at once to the detriment of other things. It's still about calories and getting the nutrients you need. If you hit your healthy sugar intake, eating a bunch more fruit or drinking an excessive amount of fruit juice probably isn't goibg be great for you.

Mental health is an aspect as well. I know that when I am real depressed, I tend to eat everything in sight. I gained a lot of weight when Trump won. I have since lost most of it, but up and down isn't good either.
Haha, I didn't think of the Trump connection, but that is when my weight loss really reversed itself. I've also had mental health problems, and have been eating everything in sight. Made worse with our breakroom vending machines taking credit cards.

Never understood how fruits have such a bad rep.

Yeah, that cheeseburger is probarly better for you than a orange.

A banana is like, 70-90 kcal? As a man you can eat 25-30 a day and still just hit your daily intake in energy needed. Who's going to eat that many though?

Eat fruit, they also contain alot of other good stuff, the solvable fibers also reduces your sugar uptake.

Fun thing, the Weightwatchers point system do not count fruits and veggies against your daily allowance, and they have many success stories.

There are 30 kcal/100 gr in watermelons, you can eat several of them aday, strawberries are a whopping 32 kcal/100 gr, skip the whipped cream though, 345 kcal/100 gr. Fruits are a good source of both vitamins and energy, alongside fibers and minerals.

If you're talking about weight loss it's as simple as calories in vs calories burned. Healthy eating is another subject but is basically just a good balance of things.

It’s not that simple. Different macros affect glucose and insulin levels which directly affect metabolism and whether or not the brain is signaled that the body is full when it eats. For whatever reason, people will buy supplements thinking that they will save their sex drive or mood or whatever, but not think about the food they eat. Food is powerful. For example, a relatively high fat/low carb diet will reduce seizures as effectively as many anti seizures meds.

Too much fruit can be bad for you because of glucose levels, but luckily the natural fiber levels of most fruits allow the body to process it much differently than if it were something that had sugar added to it after the fact.

From a 6, 2" tall guy who can never get above 180 lbs no matter how hard I try. it's always surprising how fast others around me gain weight in a matter of weeks. We all eat the same lunch at work and it's a very physical job but these guys are gaining 30 - 40 Lbs while I lose 10 Lbs it's crazy.

It is almost though, don't overcomplicate it. A varied diet on calory counting does reduce your weight, it's been proven time and time again. Naturarly there are other things to think about, but if your aim is loosing weight, counting calories is the absolute easiest way to go.

The best way is probarly to move more, but that is something alot of people have problems with getting into. I see a huge difference in movement patterns, largely in the US, it's the car you use everywhere, in Sweden where I live, you tend to walk alot more, you walk to the train station, you walk to work. Every step counts in the long run. You don't need the drive through at the bank, restaurant and liqour store. :\ But alot of places where I lived in the US, just wasn't made for walking.

Sidewalks that vanish at overpasses, or at intersections, no bike paths, sidewalks that vanish at the city limits. In some areas, sidewalks that vanish at the end of the block. Yes, generalisation, but alot of places just aren't built for movement without a car. It wasn't that easy either just to go for a stroll in the forest, here you can walk anywhere, as long as you don't disturb the landowner, in the US, it's alot more private property, where you intrude if you walk on it.

I gained 100 pounds of unneeded weight when I lived in the US, when I moved back to Sweden, it all slowly came off during 2 years, just by sticking to normal portions, and walking. And almost every meal is cooked at home.

Well I'm assuming you're not there all day so the difference is likely there when you all head home or before you head to work. You might have something small and they might have another large, calorie-full meal with coke and such, snacking also makes a huge difference. Metabolism does change things but not by that much.
