Atlus Makes Fake Metroidvania SMT Trailer to Promote Strange Journey Redux

I wish I could be as convinced as some of you people that this can't possibly be just a prank because it looks "too convincing", but I really can't be too hopeful in a universe in which this is also just a joke.

Its ironic that apparently with these fake gags these companies really unleash their skills and creativeness and drop the thrills.

But when they work on actual games its like "HERE ARE GUYS ALL IN THE SAME CLOTHES LIKE BOY BAND DOUCHES DRIVING IN A CAR, LOVE IT DICKS!!!"

I feel like a difference here is that Tactics Alexander was very obviously just Tactics Ogre SNES with slightly different sprites, where as Jack Bros Redux had a lot more work put into it.

I mean, I don't think "the plot from this FF14 expansion, but in the graphics style of a twenty year old game" is really all that creative or skillful.

Yeah, it's not like it's and unprecedented thing coming from japanese devs either.

I mean it COULD be a real thing, and boy I'd be ecstatic, but it looking "too elaborate to be fake" doesn't really mean anything.

It's not that it's too elaborate to be fake, it's that it blatantly resembles the work of a not well-known independent developer. This is really clearly Krobon Station:

Like, anything's possible, but the idea that they would make a fake trailer so clearly in the style of a specific obscure developer is a lot less likely to me than the idea that they actually hired them and they're just fucking with their audience.

They either messed up by releasing those screens and making people want that more or they were already working on something and want to gauge interest.

Oh, I totally missed that, hmm.

I think I'll have to see actual footage to compare better because with just screens it looks similar, but not THAT similar.

Still this makes it much more interesting... Damn, I'm getting my hopes up.

The likelihood that Atlus reached out to Krobon Station for this is high, but I don't think that tells us whether this will eventually be a released game or not.

I could see a situation where they had worked on this title, but it was eventually cancelled. Instead of letting it all go to waste, they decided to have fun with it and make this trailer. Would it be a good idea to have a fake-out like that in this trailer, letting us know that this is a game that they at least imagined? I don't know. But this will be a largely discussed Deep Strange Journey trailer, because of it.

If this exists, we might hear more about it next week.

I think there'sa decent chance Jack Bros 2 Electric Jackaloo could be real. But yeah. It's not so much creativity or skillful, but they clearly show they could still crank out some magic that we all crave, but don't fucking do it. To me it's just a bizarre mix of being out of touch, but then showing "NAH WE REALLY GET IT BUT EH"

Oh, come on... This has to be real. I'd definitely buy it. :|

Well, at least I have added Pharaoh Rebirth+ to my Steam wish list.

Holy shit it's real.
Missed opportunity that it's free, time limited, pc only and probably not more than that really.
Still awesome!

I don't even know what Strange Journey is nor do I care. Just make that platformer game. I'll play that.

EDIT: Oh, it's real, and playable. Yay!

Here's the download link for the game, it will expire after Dec. 24.

And the game is indeed made by Krobon and his team ladybug. (Lol at the typo at the site)

Wow, time limited? Good thing this is a PC game.

It looks like the proper title of the game is Shin Megami Tensei Synchronicity: Prologue.

When configuring controls, the functions from top to bottom are Attack, Jump, Skill, Character switch, and Pause. Check the box marked POV to use the D-pad. The Vsync option seems to be bugged and causes massive slowdown. The Jack Frost can shoot ice spikes forward or down and can charge them to freeze an enemy.

Strange Journey is incredible and I'm happy for everyone who gets to experience it for the first time, but now I want that metroidvania. Great marketing campaign.

Sega released a pixel art Bayoneta game for PC before announcing Bayoneta for PC.

Atlus(owned by Sega) released a pixel art SMT game for PC.

Played for just over an hour, defeated 2 bosses, and loving it. Pretty solid metroidvania, good mechanics, great pixel art of your favourite demons, what a treat.

It's a good metroidvania. I played it yesterday for an hour and got into Area 2. Too bad the game is in Japanese and I couldn't understand anything at all from the conversations.

I think that the controls should be polished, but not much. And the music in Area 1 (main boss theme in Strange Journey) does not fit there at all. But the concept is there, and I really like it.

Seems to be an experimental game. I suppose they want to check the reception of a game like this. If people like it, then they probably begin working on platforming games based on the Shin Megami Tensei universe, starring Jack Frost (and Pyro Jack).

To be honest, I've been waiting for Jack Frost platforming game for long. The character has a lot of charm, and needs more love from Atlus.

Beat the game, but having trouble 100%ing the map. For example, that space in the first ice area in the map, surrounded by the underwater areas with the ice-immune fish.

What a fun game. Really excited to try the harder difficulties.

Also really hoping another one is coming - it IS called "prologue" after all...

EDIT: Thought I was putting this in the OT linked above, whoopsy daisy
