Gran Turismo Sport is extremely limited in offline mode (no saves, unlocks, etc..)

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
I am pretty sure the single player progress is actually saved when you are offline, and then synced whenever you go online. There was even an apology note in the demo when this wasn't happening, and they said they have fixed it.

The only times I've played online are: Team Fortress 2 in 2007, SFIV in 2009, NFS Rivals and Far Cry 4 in 2015.

This hobby is going to phase me out.

Maybe not ideal for some but not a big issue in the grand scheme of things, my PS4 is never offline and the game is designed with online in mind anyway.

Welp, I didn't have a chance to try the demo but I figured I'd keep the download since it would take up the same space as the full game anyway. I'll be deleting it when I get home, DriveClub is all the online only racing that I need from Sony this gen.

My opinion doesn't particularly matter since I didn't have any real intention of buying the game, but I had no idea this is the case until I read that Ars article. I'm mostly surprised because I don't know what they're gaining by doing this. What benefit do they think players are receiving from this?

I hope so. It really shouldn’t be any other way. They should not limit offline.

Online, no PS Plus subscription: everything available aside from online racing. Play all single player content, unlock stuff, save progress.
But why does one need to be online to do that? I dont quite understand what “Online” means in GTS if Mulitplayer Racing needs PS Plus. Is it for leaderboards and rankings?

What happens when they take the servers down? (rhetorical question)

You can still play GT3 (the GOAT) now, 16 years later, that won't be possible with GT Sport after probably 4.

Or if your internet access is down? Stuff like this actually happens.

because it's an esport game. Your "single player" progress is being tracked against multiplayer communities. That's what the game revolves around. It's a departure from previous GT games, but they've been saying from jump that it would be. And it's entirely possible this new direction is not for you, and that's fine, but that doesn't mean it's an indictment on all online games, or that it's some deceptive bait and switch from Sony and Polyphony. This thread seems to be a collection of people who cannot separate those things.

Yes, this is correct.

But that doesn't make for a terribly exciting thread, does it?

Kinda funny to see people treating it like a non issue now.

Always online is still as bad today as it was back when MS tried it, no matter how accessible and cheap internet becomes.
and yes, i know it's not the case with GT Sport, at least not entirely. talking about the people saying stuff like "it's normal", "welcome to 2017" and etcetera

PC2 will likely be my next racing game. Little sad, its either that or i'll just got back to playing Driveclub every once in a while.

What kind of idiot came up with the idea of not being able to save without an internet connection and what kind of moron said "go with it"?

Isnt this like sony's only big game for the holidays? No way reviewers were going to slam it.

its mentioned in plenty of reviews. The difference is that you seem to think it should automatically result in a game being "slammed". Maybe the reviewers didn't see it that way.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Yikes ..

as a dominantly single player gamer, this is .. ridiculous. Really doesn't inspire confidence in picking up the game.

And why does the game need to restrict offline mode for this functionality? It would be possible to feed back this data to the servers in the event someone plays GTS while PSN or the internet connection goes offline, no?
-> I am just trying to understand the technical necessity behind this decision

It looked to me like you were commenting on the VR mode having no progression, and saying what's the point in playing it then?

VR is validated again since it has no progression anyways. I didn't know it was a separate mode, I assumed you could play the entire game in VR.

It's 2017. This is a thing.

Problem is it doesn't need to always require a internet connection and it shouldn't always require a internet connection because there's no good justification for it. Even if your game is online multiplayer focused, if it has a substantial single player component then that single player component should be (almost) entirely unaffected by playing offline. This game has a notable single player component and so there's zero good reasons why that single player component shouldn't be fully available offline.

That im not sure of. I guess it would depend on whether or not it requires a constant online connection, or if it simply requires you to be online when you go to upload your save.

Because of this:

The reasoning behind the move has to do with the linkup between Gran Turismo and the FIA, the international organization that runs world motorsport. FIA-recognized e-sports are an integral part of the game, so keeping everyone's saves in the cloud is meant to keep everyone honest and above-board.

Also, let's talk about Gravity Rush 2, a Sony first-party game whose online functionality is set to be turned off in the next few months. That game isn't even a year old yet. What happens in a few years if you want to play GT Sport and the servers no longer exist?

Ding Ding Ding

GT5 servers were shut down almost the instant GT6 released... combine that with Gravity Rush 2 and you have a history of behavior from Sony that does NOT bode well for the future play-ability of GTSport...

We need to stop bending over and taking it and fight for our games.

Yes but progress is not. Why doesn't it save on disk when you are offline and sync when you are back online?

weird thing, because actually it does (at least in beta):

so, I don't know - it's a mystery :)

Well, you shouldn't be worried, because GT7 or GTS2 won't be released any soon :)

They don't have to put an online only sticker on their game or deal with the announcement of it being online only prior to release, even though they made the game a coaster offline.

There is an online only sticker on the game. And the game was announced as an Esports focused title. You act like they've tried to hide from this, which is false.

yep, me too:

btw, that thread has more views that OT Forza 7 thread :)

edit: ^ I guess that because Forza fans spend more time in GT threads rather than in Forza 7 OT :)

What a huge shit of a post.

Ironic lack of self-awareness as you dig out fanboys in the most fanboy way possible.
