Digital Foundry Xbox One X Review

Is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to use the power cable from my ONE S on my ONE X? I'm in the UK if that matters

No it's the exact same cable.

One of things Microsoft themselves were proud of is the ease of install and the physical "nub" at the rear so you know where to connect the cables when reaching behind unseen.

They're expecting some people to replace their S with the X and you can use all your existing cables.

I'd probably use the included HDMI cable though, as I'm sure I read it was different in some way, even though digital cables are generally the same but.....

Well that's what I'm saying. This is the one reason I've cancelled my pre-order (was really looking forward to it). I was hoping for far better performance but it's not the case. I'm more into performance boosts than resolution boosts.

So JC3 was your only concern? The video clearly shows the console will improve performance, hell I bought the XBOs because of the minor performance gains!

Same leads and accessories all round - the idea is you just swap and go

Can someone tell me why am I not seeing any differences with Just Cause 3 then? Pro and X.

What are you looking for? if a game is 900P on Xbox One & 1080P on PS4 but both have a few dips in fps Xbox One X isn't going to make the game better than it is on PS4/PS4 Pro but some games are 1080P or have dynamic scaling on Xbox One so in those cases the driver level anisotropic filtering & extra GPU resources can make some unpatched games better on Xbox One X.

I mean Microsoft has been very clear that their goal is 4k gaming. I'm not sure why you expected anything else.

not an idiot

don't forget supersampling (at 1080p)

I agree. I hope going forward that all developers provide an option for performance mode on X1 & Pro games. 4K resolution is pointless (in most games, for now) if performance mode (e.g., see Horizon Zero Dawn) makes games look better at 1080p.

Yes, the CPU is definitely going to hold back framerate on new games, GPU power is always more about pixels than frames - unless devs offer a 'better performance' option....maybe now we have both Pro and XBOX then devs might offer this more?

I mean some are already doing that.

Rotr
Gears 4
Hitman

All have a 60 fps mode. So idk what more people want?

Looks cool but for me not worth picking up just for Xbox exclusives. Multi-platform I'm happy enough with the PS4 Pro.

What? It’s 40% better in gpu power over the PS Pro. The same amount as the PS4 is over Xbox one.

Their new command processor makes the CPU less of an issue than before and in some ways unshackles it. It’s actually pretty damn impressive. I don’t expect the CPU to bottleneck it. See Eurogamer's article excerpt below...

However, potentially the most exciting aspect surrounding the CPU revamp doesn't actually relate to the processor blocks at all, but rather to the GPU command processor - the piece of hardware that receives instructions from the CPU, piping them through to the graphics core.

"We essentially moved Direct3D 12," says Goossen. "We built that into the command processor of the GPU and what that means is that, for all the high frequency API invocations that the games do, they'll all natively implemented in the logic of the command processor - and what this means is that our communication from the game to the GPU is super-efficient."

Processing draw calls - effectively telling the graphics hardware what to draw - is one of the most important tasks the CPU carries out. It can suck up a lot of processor resources, a pipeline that traditionally takes thousands - perhaps hundreds of thousands - of CPU instructions. With Scorpio's hardware offload, any draw call can be executed with just 11 instructions, and just nine for a state change.

"It's a massive win for us and for the developers who've adopted D3D12 on Xbox, they've told us they've been able to cut their CPU rendering overhead by half, which is pretty amazing because now the driver portion of that is such a tiny fraction," adds Goossen.

What do you guys expect ?! A praise how undeniably good X is and that will dominate in multi-plat game with no sweat..cmon y'all smarter than that...SonyGAF.

Spankey, don't waste your time bro, they don't want to hear that.

Seems like a great system. Unfortunately I'm already heavily invested in my PS4 but still. Props to MS for getting out a more powerful system, which will ultimately force it's market competitors to do the same in the future.

It looks beautiful, MS really upped their game after the original One looked like a VHS with elephantiasis (since then surpassed by the PS4 Pro as the ugliest console since the Jaguar). Both the Slim and the X look sci-fi as fuck.

The One wasn't bad looking, just ultra plain. I've seen LaserDisc players that are more asthetically pleasing.

Df really is glowing about the Xbox one X, i didnt think they would upscale 360 games or meet the general 4k performance in such a quiet small box either.

Out with the 360 and original xbox one .. bring me my X!

Amazingly well designed piece of hardware.
Clever, efficient solutions all around.
A bit too late now to shake the market I think, but had MS put the same effort in designing the One, things would be different now probably.
Hopefully this is an indication of what Microsoft will try to do with their next console.

What are you talking about? unpatched games are not running at a resolution above 1080P to be supersampled.
Would it be possible to increase the resolution in XB1 games (like AC Unity for example), kinda like they do for certain OG/360 games (up to 4K)?

I don't think it's too late.
With their generationless approach, Xbox One X will continue to shine even after Xbox Two is out, then as the new base model. In stark contrast to the end of the 360 era MS seem really focussed now, and this bodes well for the next hardware iteration.

At the driver level they could probably have Xbox One games render at 2X the original resolution maybe even 4X the original resolution but I couldn't say how that would work out.

Never really understood the mentality that posters have to come into threads for Xbox and post disingenuous posts.

The fake cancelled preorders, the garbage that onQ spouts, etc

I must have really hurt some feelings around here because people can't seem to keep me off of their minds.

You haven't hurt my feelings. I put you on the video game commentary equivalent as Skip Bayless. Unless you are getting paid for the work you put in around here, it's actually kinda sad

Again what are you talking about? I haven't said one bad thing in this thread yet you're so upset that you're calling my name. so it's either you're not smart enough to understand something that I posted in this thread or your feelings are hurt about something that has nothing to do with this thread. so what are you mad at?

Again not mad, you amuse me.

Have a good day.

Ugh, pull yourself together duder!

It’s a well-priced box for what you get inside it.

It’s not a special release or “creation” it’s just a good console.

Holy moses! Marvel at this ultimate achievement of man!

Hyperbole like that makes appreciation of the machine seem like BS.

Agreed.

It was laughable when people were going gaga over Mark Cerny also

On topic, amazing review. The only negative he could muster was to complain about the Amazon and YouTube apps! Lol. Massive props. They really knocked it out of the park with the hardware.
