On 28 March 2018 at 12:00 UTC, the online services of the PlayStation®3-exclusive software “Gran Turismo 6” will come to an end. Prior to this on 31 January 2018, we will also end the distribution of downloadable content that can be used in-game.

After the end period, it will no longer be possible to utilise online services such as the Community, Open Lobby, Quick Match, and Seasonal Events. The offline portions of the game can still be played.

We would like to thank the many users of the Gran Turismo 6 online service since its first launch in 2013. From here on, we will continue to further improve the online services for the currently available title “Gran Turismo Sport”.

Expected but it's shitty that not even DLC will be available. I barely played the game because when I tried (a year or 2 after release) it took so long to update and it would constantly fail.

This is the most annoying part of Games as a Service.

Disgraceful. This crap will be the next big games crash.

Ill stick with physical single player offline console from now on as its too hard to tell who to trust.

Sony: "Please stop playing your old game and give us money for our new game"
Consumer: "That's okay, I'm happy with GT6 and GTS doesn't seem like a worthwhile upgrad..."
Sony: *flicks off switch*

What a joke, it's not like GT6 sold under a million. My brother plays this game every day and will be really hurt since he's more of a casual gamer.

I thought Sony charging for PSN would be the end of them sucking in regards to online. They murder a lot of games.

While I understand where you're coming from. It should be pointed out that this is a PS3 game. They never charged for online access on the PS3.

Stuff like this is why Gen7 stuff will mostly be worthless 20 years from now. Half of it won’t work or will be incomplete because online functionality/DLC won’t be available.

Ah, thank you for reminding us it’s ok they disable the ability to use DLC for a 4 yo game. You must be amongst the “screw old games we only want to play new” people.

How did you even came up with such a accusation?

What I'm saying is quite the opposite: it's crazy how a GT came out at the end of 2013 and it's already on its way to the grave (online wise).

Even Demon's Souls stayed up for 9 years.

Hopefully emulation will be able to save this stuff, at least the DLC.

When people complain about emulation or say it leads to piracy I always think about these sorts of exact situations.

Ah, sorry. Thought you meant that since the game came out in 2013 it was ok to shut them down. Sorry my bad.

I fear this is going to get more common moving forward to get people to buy the newest entry. Some are wising up to the idea that micro-transactions are not acceptable in the way they are being implemented in popular games. Online passes are history so I expect shutting down servers will be the next strategy to get consumers to buy their latest game. Just imagine if Activision decided to only offer online for 18 months to play Call of Duty online.

I'm a bit confused. I understand that the online servers are done but does that mean you can't use any of the dlc? Was all the dlc multiplayer? Can you not redownload it from your library?

This is pretty sad, has to be one of the shortest multiplayer support times I've seen, not including obvious reasons like company going bankrupt or something catastrophic.
Common Sony your better than that

Isn't this around the same time that Demon's Souls gets shut down? They must be cleaning house with PS3 game servers.

March of doom.

If publishers are going to shut down game servers and block access to paid content, the software to run the server should at least be put into the public domain. Let us run our own GT6 and Demons Souls servers and all will be forgiven.

Yeah also when WipEout HD gets shut down. As far as GT6 goes it had terrible online gameplay unless you know a bunch of people and organize a private lobby. I dabbled in it but it was horrible, stuck to offline which is funny because in GTS I actually play online more than offline.

What makes this so shitty is that Sony now charges for online play via psplus. Yes, this is a ps3 games, but it’s one of their biggest, and ps3 owners pay for plus too. They could take a tiny sliver of their plus revenue to keep the servers up. But no, they are in first place again, so #fuck the gamer.

Such a weird thing for Sony to do. Maybe the need buy some MS Azure servers. They spin up on an "as needed" basis. More players more servers, less players less servers. Minimum cost.

It's stupid because they are running into the EA syndrome of just shutting down servers for games that still have players.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I hope they don’t do this for the games release on PS4 now that they do not have the excuse since people pay for the online service.

Things like this remind me why collecting this gen is pointless. Half this shit isnt gonna work years from now between rechargeables in everything, Hard Drives having a lifespan, and servers with updates and online play being shut down.

I know that i should let go and move on to other things and let emulation take over like i have for all other systems up to the mid 90's but it still bugs me for some reason.

I highly doubt that cost is the issue here for Sony. Hosting a server for a small player base isn't some grand expense. This is nothing more than a forced "hurry up" to get GT6 gamers to migrate to the new service based Gran Turismo model so that they can farm them for more money.

#4theplayers. Indeed.

Pretty much. When the PS5 is announced, I'll be creating mirrors of my PS4 drives and ensuring that I have all of the essential titles from this gen updated and archived for storage. I'm not as concerned with my MS consoles as they're heading towards a persistent Xbox eco-system where everything you have now will work in the future. I know everyone here hates MS but if you ignore their first party output, they're doing a hell of a lot right this gen.

That reminds me: I guess I have to buy GT6 for my PS3 and update it while I can. It's time to unbox my mint condition second gen PS3 :D

Hopefully the same won’t happen to GT Sport since it’s online game.

For me, this is is all the more reason to not invest in GT Sport, ever. Games designed as an online service are designed from a core level to be "turned off" at the publishers whim. Sony isn't a charity and I'm not donating my money to their cause with the "added benefit" of being able to play a game for an indeterminate amount of time.

I seriously doubt that. I bet that one year after they ship the next GT game GT Sport's servers will go down. Companies don't want you to be able to play an online game that has no microtransactions/loot boxes forever.

Its an old game

it's only 4 years old

do you realize that COD 4 serves are still online ?? and that is a 10 year old game, and there are a lot older games that still have functional servers

i don't remember GT6 being a huge failure for them to shut it down this quickly, it's obvious that they want fans to move to GTS

Can't they set aside one server in a corner office?
How much is it to maintain one rackmount server? Serious question.
