Apologize for the double post (Can't edit posts yet). Figured it out. It wasn't the Super NT at all. I had to disable some of the "advanced" features of my Samsung TV in order to stop the dimming.

Hmmm... Horizontal Interpolation was already enabled and I tried both 4x and 5x. The dimming/shimmering effect still occurs during movement. Still messing around with settings to see if I can figure this out.

Is your television doing 1:1 pixel mapping, aka no overscan? If there's any scaling involved, you're likely to experience this. Without horizontal interpolation, I get shimmering all the time and I can't deal with that. I can give up a bit of sharpness for that. It's a great feature.

Has anybody who pre-ordered from the second run of consoles had a dispatch notice yet? I know it's a little early but I thought I'd remind people that there was issues with accurate information being dispatched with the first round.

For anybody who has pre-ordered from the second run, it may be worth reading my early post here as it seemed spot when I did what I said, even though I didn't receive any notifications from Analogue themselves until it was well on the way. It takes minutes to sign up for a free UPS account and because they have your details in your account it will add your package without you having to do anything manually.

I just checked my order and it hasn't shipped yet. If I don't receive anything on or before the 1st, I'm gonna set up an account. Hopefully they've ironed out the shipping issues this time. I still got to clean my carts before it arrives :p

They are due to be dispatched until tomorrow but I was wondering if maybe they'd dispatch them early again, hopefully they'll have sorted out the issues this time for people. For anybody waiting for a dispatch, I imagine you'll be fine but you may want to read what Analogue said about the issues last time just incase things do go wrong again.

Hopefully everything will be OK this time though.

I was so excited waiting for mine to turn up and I've been so happy with it since I've had it although I have mainly been messing around with the jailbreak firmware to see how well games run rather playing a game properly. For anybody who does have a GitHub account, it's worth leaving feedback and suggestions there as although it may well be made by exactly the same person, it is being dealt with in a far more open manner.

I've suggested a few improvements since I've had mine, including the adding option to hide file extension while browsing the SD card here.

Atari Age is probably the best place for feedback for people running the official firmware, I signed up there ages ago but unfortunately it seems to take an age to get an account approved there so I still can't post there. Even if you're not a member it's probably worth reading that thread anyway as it's really interesting and kevtris does post there pretty often.

At the moment he says that he's still working on what he calls "major core bugs" rather than offering QoL improvements as now it's out in the open and in the hands of thousands of people, bugs really should be turning up far more. I would offer to post bugs on there for people but as I said, I can't so maybe there is somebody on here who would be happy to help in some way.

Yeah, keeping my fingers crossed they handle the shipping better this time.

I don't have an account on Atari Age, but I've got an account on Nintendo Age (if you don't have one). It's not as active as the AA thread, but Kevtris has been posting in it. He confirmed last night a built in Game Genie is coming fairly soon and that it's super easy to add. He said he's just been working on bugs right now so that'll come first before the bells and whistles he plans on adding.

I'm not sure if there's a waiting period to get approved (I was approved pretty quickly if I remember), but you can try setting up an account there if you want. Or if you don't have an account there and you want me to post something, I'll help you out. Kevtris is posting there though, so he should see the bugs you report.

Thanks, I've signed up to Nintendo Age now, lets see what happens.

Out of interest, for anybody on here. I'm thinking about getting an official SNES controller for this but obviously when you buy stuff like this on eBay you never really know what you're getting and it's obviously going to be years old so even if it looks perfect it may not e around for that much longer.

What I'd thought about was using the SNES Mini controller which obviously has Wii style connector, I was wondering if anybody knew if there is an extension cable type thing available that would enable me to do this? I have looked but haven't been able to find one.
iu
We actually have five of these controllers in the house and they're pretty much perfect and also made by Nintendo so it would be really useful if I could get hold of something like an extension lead to do this. Also, we have NES Mini controllers too, if the NES core was ever made available for the Super Nt.

I've seen people talk about this one. It's only one I've seen.

Ordered a black one of the 2nd round and got it today (germany). So i don't think you have to wait much longer.

Stupid Question. Is there a way to recharge the 8Bit bluetooth controllers on the Super NT itself? I feel like I'm missing something obvious here...

Thanks for that. The fact that it appears to have some sort of additional hardware partway along the cable suggests that it could be a little more complex than just connecting the cables together.

I have also managed to find this thing on the USA eBay (I'm in the UK) which from what I can tell seems perfect but it is coming from Hong Kong and it does look like a really cheap cable that may just come apart pretty quickly. I've ordered a couple ($7.18 with free delivery) but the description isn't very clear.

It looks right though and I'm willing to take a risk for the asking price.

Dammit, they've apparently been banned from exporting to the UK by HMRC due to not being compliant, what a shame. :(

Anyway, back on topic.

Haemi Haemi
Good to hear, what do you think of it so far. As much as I love mine, they're still very much into fixing bugs with the core at the moment so newer content may not start to come for a month or two.

It's ridiculous just how excited I am that more people are getting these now!! :D

A bit of an update on the using an official SNES classic controller on this. The Cables that I wasn't able to import from Hong Kong on ebay.com are now also available on ebay.co.uk so I've ordered the three that were available for a total of £8.97 which included free postage. They still look like they're going to fall apart in ten minutes but I thought they were worth a try.

I'll update this sometime after it turns up sometime between 20th March and 20th April.

I like it. You can really feel a difference to an emulator. Didn't have much time to test all my games, but so far it's really good. Had some graphics problems at first because of NTSC/PAL.
The only thing i would like to see now, is my AA-shader being added to the filter list.😬

Good to hear, maybe they will add more options like that once they've got to a position of sorting out the relatively minor issues with it. I can't imagine I'd use it but it's always good to have options.

I constantly amazed by the audio I get out of this thing, it sounds so good.

There's a new official firmware release available now.

Analogue said:
Please upgrade your Super Nt to the latest firmware for the best possible experience.
You will need a small SD card to upgrade the firmware on your Super Nt.

v4.4 notes:
  • Cheat codes tool added. It’s under “settings” “tools” “cheat codes”. You can enter up to 6 codes. Entering the cheat menu will disable codes (so you can enter them, change them, etc. without crashing the game) and exiting it will enable codes if they are enabled via the check boxes.
  • Soft reset vs. hard reset added. When a cart is started via the menu, a hard reset (clearing RAM) happens. Pressing reset after this causes a soft reset (RAM contents unchanged).
  • Holding reset on powerup will force 480p mode. This should fix the issue people were having with non-detection of EDID leading to blank screens. Once booted, you can attempt to change modes to a higher one (i.e. 720p).
  • Added ability to step through heights in 0.5x steps (ie. 4x, 4.5x, 5x) in the width+height menu by pressing start.
  • RGB off by 1 is fixed.
  • NTT Data compatibility mode added under “hardware”. Turning this on will nerf the NTT data pad so that it appears to the system like a stock controller. This lets it be used on the super gameboy, street racer, starfox 2, etc. There are many games that are incompatible with it in weird ways like monopoly. Using one will cause the chance/chest cards to instantly skip.
  • Samurai Shodown/Spirits - Fixed. HDMA happening during a DMA causing issues at the start.
  • Twistit - Fixed. HDMA during DMA causing issues.
  • Monopoly - Fixed. Game gets stuck on chance/chest animation.
  • Chou Aniki - Fixed. Shadow not updated before the interrupt happens and thus no more interrupts occur and the game wedged on a black screen.

A new version of the jailbreak firmware is also out now too. ;)
  • synced to fw 4.4
    • Cheat codes tool added. It’s under “settings” “tools” “cheat codes”. You can enter up to 6 codes. Entering the cheat menu will disable codes (so you can enter them, change them, etc. without crashing the game) and exiting it will enable codes if they are enabled via the check boxes.

    • Chou Aniki - Fixed. Shadow not updated before the interrupt happens and thus no more interrupts occur and the game wedged on a black screen.
  • adds a new "Save?" dialog box.
  • fixes DMA-related bugs, which should solve most random crashes.
  • fixes both SRAM bugs (firmware 6.4 only saved once and had a nasty corruption bug). Please test it again so we can be sure the save functionality works as expected. Any save games made on the jailbreak firmware 6.4 should be considered as potentially corrupted and must be discarded.
  • fixes glitch with some games disabling the "return to menu" shortcut.
Super NT Jailbreak v6.5

I've not tried either of today's firmware releases so I can't really comment on them but it appears to be v4.4 with extra bits.

Dang, by time I get mine, this thing will pretty much be entirely fixed through updates :D. I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing................but damn it, I want my Super NT :)!!!!!!!!

Hopefully today is the day they ship it out. Keeping fingers crossed. I've already received all but one other game (which is coming today) I ordered from Japan. I'm ready!

Analogue just sent me an email with the tracking. My Super NT is officially on its way!

I want to get one, but I don't really care for the black version. Do you guys think I'll be out of luck if I wait until they restock the transparent ones, as in, they'll stop production for all models rather than restock in the coming months?

From everything I've read, there's going to be another restock of all colors, so you should be good to pass on the black.

Fantastic, I was so excited waiting for mine to turn up.

I'm not aware of anything being announced yet but they've been so successful that it would be really strange for them not to restock them, even if you do have to wait a short while.

I can't wait! I already got the new firmware put on an SD card ready for it, lol.

I still got to get around to cleaning my carts. Gonna try and do that today.

I could be wrong but I seem to remember that last time they waited until they were completely out of stock before accepting orders again so you may have to wait for that to happen again, I can't image it will be too long though.

Just got my Super NT and its amazing. I've hit a snag though. My Super Everdrive works fine on my actual SNES but I keep getting errors on the Super NT where it won't read the SD card. Really bummed about this.

Edit*

I just realized I needed to change a setting on the Super NT system menu. Now its working great. Whew!

Lol. I actually like all the colors, but my fav is definitely the Classic (that's the one I got) since it looks like the US SNES.

dolabla dolabla J JP

Thanks for the answers, I'll take my chances then and wait until they release more colours again. Thanks!

No problem. Like JP said, it's looking more and more likely they're just waiting to sell out of the black and then the other colors will return.

Which version of the firmware will you be installing?

I went with the newest firmware 4.4 since it looks to fix many of the early issues. Are you using this firmware? If so, have you noticed any bugs?

Btw, I ordered Yoshi's Island, lol. I went ahead and got the SFC version since it was much cheaper. It's crazy how much cheaper some of these SFC games are compared to their US counterparts.

My Super NT is set to arrive Tuesday. That shipping is highly steep for it to take that long. Oh well, I'll just be glad to have it.

I'm using the jailbreak firmware as it contains all the official firmware's updates. I installed the original version just to mess around with it but then they released v4.4 official and v6.5 jailbreak on the same day so I've not really had a reason to go back to the normal one again.

It's worked for me because I'm new to a lot of ROM hacks and there are absolutely millions of them out there of varying quality. I probably have over a hundred Super Marion ROM hacks but I will get rid of most of them and just the better quality ones. I've also got quite a few fan translations to Japanese only games like Seiken Densetsu 3/Secret of Mana 2 so it really has been fantastic for me.

I bought the Japanese version of Yoshi's Island too, for exactly the reason you mention. It's not as if it's the sort of game you really need to be able to read to be able to play properly. It's worth looking out for cheap Korean copies of games too as they mainly got the American version of games with a Korean label on the cartridge.

Another stupid question. What are the advantages/disadvantages of the jailbreak firmware over the official one? Specifically as someone who owns an SD2SNES.

JP

I've never actually owned a flash cart and this i actually the first SNES I've owned too. There has been talk on Atari Age that both a flash cart and this do things that the other can't but I couldn't work out what the hell the advantages were. That place tends to fall apart sometimes.

I suppose for the best support at the moment it's best to use both and see which works best for you with each solution. it is probably worth remembering that the Super Nt firmware is very much a work in progress at the moment so will likely improve quite a bit over time with new features being added. I've personally not seen a reason to go back to the official firmware as they are essentially the same but the jailbreak version has extra bits.

Interesting. I didn't know that about the Korean versions. I'll have to check that out.

I won't say never, but as of now I probably won't do the whole jailbreak thing. I like trying to build a physical cart collection and using those carts. It's just a nostalgia thing I guess. It will definitely cost me more money though, lol.

You're not kidding about some those hacks. Some of them look awesome. I was looking at Brutal Mario World to buy on cart the other day.

One game I really want to own is Super Back to the Future 2. I'm a huge Back to the Future fan and because it never released outside of Japan, I've never played it before. Only seen gameplay vids. It's a pretty expensive cart though.

I've just tried a translation of Super Back to the Future 2 and that dose seem surprisingly good, I love that I'm able to mess around with stuff like this now.

There's a two part programme from SNES Drunk about some of the best Rom Hacks, there are probably a few videos of his that you may find really interesting. As somebody who played the SNES when it was out but didn't own one at the time so I only really played the expected stuff, there are so many hidden gems out there that are completely new to me.

I know it's unusual but I've also never really been into emulators so a lot of this stuff really is brand new to me.

I'll still keep buying cart games and I'm even thinking of maybe buying a couple of the ROM Hack cartridges too, I really want the Secret of Mana 2 translation as it seems to be a wonderful game that I probably wouldn't have played if it was only in the original Japanese version.

Be wary with the Korean carts, I know the Mario games are just the American versions but I'd always check about specific games before buying them as it may not be the same for all of them.

I'm thinking of setting up an OT for this over the weekend if I get time to, just to tidy things up for people on here who are buying these things.

Yeah, that Super Back to the Future 2 looks fun. The NES versions were blah.

I just watched those vids. I'm always amazed at what dedicated fans can come up with. Those hacks looked awesome. I need to get that Zombies Ate My Neighbors hack and those Mario and Zelda ones.

I'm looking at buying some of the Satellaview games like BS Mario, BS Zelda Maps 1&2 and Zelda Ancient Stone Tablets. I never knew these games and this add on for the SFC even existed until last year and I've been enamored with it ever since.

Go for it on the OT if you get a chance. That'd be cool.

Got mine yesterday. Amazing piece of hardware that looks and feels amazing. Every game I have thrown at it works first try. I took all my carts apart and scrubbed them really well (took me like 2.5 hours to do everything) a few days ago so it better work :D

Only complaint I have is it grips some of the carts too tight. Some are very easy to get out and some are too hard. Maybe it will loosen up as it gets more use. But that's literally all the complaints I have and it's a very minor one that may fix itself.

I'm gaming on a Sony 4k and it looks fantastic. What settings are you guys using?

Last edited:
I'm refreshing their store something like six times a day. After reading up on people's opinion on the transparent model (not like the renders, apparently, and 8bitdo's transparent pad is even a worse case) I'm still passing on the black model, but because I'm waiting for the SFC one now.

It's quite hard not to fall to temptation, however. It's just a colour after all.

I'm on a 4K panel too and I keep changing my settings, I'd rather be running at 1080p but it's just too small or too large for me if I use integer scaling. I also like scaliness and at the moment 720/60 with horizontal integer scaling is the best way to do that although KevTris has said that he's going to redo the scanlines so there will hopefully be more options available to doit correctly then.

Resolution: 720p 60
Width: 4.3 for 16:9
Horizontal Position: +51
Height: 3.0x
Vertical Position: +37
Vertical Interpolation: Disabled
Hybrid Scanlines
Scanline Depth: +50
Extra Features: All three activated
Buffer Mode: Zero Delay
Color: Default

At the moment I'm still messing around with the width as I'm trying to get the correct aspect ratio in relation to a PVM monitor whilst keeping integer scaling on the Horizontal plane. I'm still messing around trying to get perfect scanlines too which I know is probably going to be a waste if they're completely reworked a some point.

I've also messed around with the overscan settings on my TV and I now have just under an inch at the top and bottom of the screen that is just black. I've found that it just looks a little better for me like that as the screen is pretty close and this way I know that I'm not missing any important information.

I've also changed the console LED to match the blue light on my 8bitdo bluetooth receiver. If you do want to customise the colour of the LED then go to System > LED Options > SF. Once you've done that go into Adjust Pattern and unselect Animate Pattern. Change Animate Speed to 0 and then just use the Pattern Position slider to find the specific colour that you want. I don't think I have it quite right yet but I've adjusted that to +128 to get it pretty close to the blue that I'm looking for.

I think you said you were using the standard firmware? I think the only other thing that I've changed is to change SD Card Speed to the fastest of the three available speeds and that's worked brilliantly for me.

dolabla

Member
Yeah, I'm using the standard firmware.

I tried 720p, but it doesn't seem to allow the height of the screen to be filled :(. It sucks cause I'd like to use scanlines and be able to fill the height of the screen, but @ 1080p it's either over scanned (height @ 1200) or not enough screen filled scanlines to work right for me. I think Kevtris did say he is supposed to fix this though with 1080p. I'm currently using:

Width: 1400 (I was using 1365 stolen from Digital Foundry's settings)
Horizontal: 38
Height: 1149
Vertical: 42

Scanlines: Off

Scalers: Off
H Interpolation: Disabled
V Interpolation: Enabled

I keep switching between different settings and I just can't decide which I prefer.

1080p is definitely a lot sharper than 720p for me even though I'm using a 4k so 3x720p is a better fit once I've messed around with overscan on my TV. 1080p sounds the same as it is for you with it either being too much or too little to work perfectly. These are the tribulations of using something that duplicates a 20 year old technology on something that it was never really designed to work on.

Have you tried scanlines at 1080p? They don't look as good as they do at 720p but as long as you're using integer scaling on the vertical axis then that gets rid of the main issues. kevtris pretty much said that he was going to back and redo the scanlines from scratch so hopefully there will be an improvement for everybody who uses them then.

I'm on Discord with kevtris and it sounds like we should be expecting an update this week sometime as it should be with the beta testers at the moment so as long as it's working OK it shouldn't be too far off. It does sound like the new scanline implementation won't be in this update as he seems to have been concentrating on relatively small bugs that games like Marvellous, Batman Returns, Chrono Trigger, etc were having. I think the priority is to get rid of any bugs first that could stop people playing particular games rather than rework something that isn't exactly essential even though I really like scanlines.

Hopefully most of the bugs will be gone this time although I'm sure some will pop up from time to time, once were past this then he'll move onto adding new features and enhancements to it.

I keep hovering over the buy button for a SD2SNES cart..because I clearly haven't already spent enough on the Super Nt already with the console, the controllers and the games that I've been spending money on recently. They seem quiet a bit ore complicated than the alternative firmware for the Super NT though so I'm not quite sure yet if I'm going to get one.

JP

Member
The SD2SNES also contains an FPGA as well as other custom chips which means that it's able to do several things that the Super Nt will possibly never be able to do. It currently supports many of the enhanced chips if you're loading a game from a ROM and they are hoping to also add support for the more complex chips too at some point.

Because it's designed as an add-on to the SNES rather than a replacement like the Super Nt, the included hardware never has to worry about "being a SNES" so the included hardware can be used to do extra things. Combined with the Super Nt it should end up being a pretty amazing system.

The additional hardware also give you more options in terms of ROM hacks, people have been able to add video and CD quality music to ROM hacks. For me, that's interesting but I'm not quite sure how I feel about things like that yet but it does open things up in areas that would traditionally be available in hacks on PC but not on console.

J JP I see, thanks for the explanation. Wouldn't it be possible for the jailbreak firmware to offer the same capabilities as the SD2SNES if, after all, they're both FPGAs and can be programmed likewise?

Those MSU1 games sound fantastic, by the way.
