Soo that PlayStation TV huh?

It's strange that I have to connect my Vita to my PS3 after I download Silent Hill, MGS, Silent Hill Origins, and a few other titles to my PS3. Then I use Content Manager to move them over to my Vita just to play them.

Yeah, and that I get. The Vita has inputs that can't be replicated with a controller (I'm not saying this is reflected in their whitelist, but in principle I understand that shortcoming). The PS1 stuff that was already being emulated on the Vita hardware, though? It doesn't make any sense.

Licensing is such a quaqmire of absolute monstrosity that it easily explains any off the oddities we see prevalent among PS devices. Licensing is a beast, is often different for every item, and both parties have completely different goals. Change the device, and any number of licenses may no longer be applicable based on how each license is worded. Many content owners are adverse to broad licenses that aren't time/device specific, so it's easy to run afoul of this situation... basically, tons of games are ticking time bombs in the licensing department.

It's gotten [slightly] better in the modern age, when companies are used to licensing for digital, but it's still difficult. Licenses from before/the early years of digital storefronts are an absolute crapshoot, and resolving them every time there is an issue is costly and sometimes impossible. I realize from our perspective, it's an easy 'the license should just allow all devices for all time', but few content providers will ever cede such control to their IP.

is the US version this shitty? I really want to play xenogears on my tv but it seems like my options are quite limited, sadly.

Always sorta wanted one for the hell of it, but never had a reason to. A friend might buy one and borrow my games, though; thankfully all he's really interested in are VNs that are compatible.

As someone who missed out on the PS1, PSP, and Vita's library of games, I absolutely love the little device. Honestly, it has probably been the system I have played the most the last two years. Currently going through Danganronpa V3 on the PSTV and will start Mega Man Legends 2 next!

Sure, some of the big name games do not work, but you still have a solid collection to choose from.

I bought one of these for like $20 a year or two ago and I still haven't taken it out of the box and probably never will.

I thought this was a thread about the actual PlayStation TV.

I still have an love mine have SFV MVCi and my arcade sticks hooked up. I remember there were hardware issues for some since the backlight was set to ridiculously high levels out of the box but I set mine to 5 and have had no issues knock on wood...it's going to die tonight isn't it?

Staggeringly huge missed opportunity. Hard to imagine why they even bothered releasing it in this state.

Hell, if they had at least gotten streaming apps on board out of the gate, they could have gone the route of "affordable streaming video box that also plays actual games instead of the crap on other boxes."

Ah yes the Playstation TV aka the Vita TV

I considered getting one but I remembered that it's basically a Vita without a screen but still plagued by the problem that the vita had namely that it still required the expensive memory card.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
uh cant say that's my experience OP. All of the PSP and vita games i wanted to play are compatible, and ones that arent are already remastered on PS4.

So I recently bought a PlayStation TV. Only £35, what a bargain! Now I can play all those digital psone, PSP and PS Vita games on the big screen.

NOPE

Nothing I want to play is compatible, be it PSP, PS Vita or Psone Classic.

No Final Fantasy games work, no Vagrant Story, no MGS. So much just doesn't work! (Eu Model)

And the PSP games look like hot garbage! Maybe that's just because theyre low res, but being outputted to 720p on my 1080p looks weird.

This is such a wasted opportunity. A classics style mini console with access to PSOne,PSP and PSVita games would be amazing IF IT ACTUALLY FRIGGING WORKED. That's before we even get started on the name and marketing of this device (PlayStation TV??)

Sony, make a PS Classic based on the hardware of a Vita, and make games actually work on it. That would be amazing please.

Oh by the way, does anyone know if I can switch to the US store and have more luck.

I got one like 2 or 3 years ago for $30 Canadian along with Persona 4 Golden.

One of my best purchases.

I was shocked and appaled that it doesn't support 1080p signaling. The double-scaling result going from 272p (PSP) / 544p (Vita native) first to 720p, then to 1080p in the TV is never going to look nice.

Can't speak for the Europe store, but the US games have a pretty good selection. Isn't 100% obviously, but I can play most games I want to on it, and the rest I try that don't work are PS+ freebies that I'll just delete. Also, since it is region free you can import physical games and they'll work on any account, so you don't HAVE to do the shitty change region method if you are willing to go physical for imports.

What is compatible is not the region of the console, but rather the region of the games. So, for example, Hatsune Miku Project Diva f (1) doesn't work in the US, but I have no problem playing my Japanese version that bought before a US release announcement on my US PSTV w/ a US PSN account once patched. This might be an option for Europeans that have the shit list, just import US physical games where possible.

- Phantasy Star Nova (JP, physical)
- Project Diva f (JP, physical)
- Assassin's Creed Chronicles Trilogy (physical)
- Steins;Gate (digital)
- Steins;Gate 0 (digital)
- Zen Pinball 2 (digital)
- Qbert Rebooted (digital)
- Kick & Fennick (digital)

are all games I played a decent to large amount on it, not to mention some PSP and PS1 games.

I will also mention I have excellent success with PS4 streaming. My PS4 is connected physically and my PSTV wirelessly into my bedroom and I rarely get lag and have played stuff like Kings Tale: FFXV, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Assassin's Creed Unity, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, and Final Fantasy XV on there. When my kid or wife need to use the TV, I just move over. The resolution and sound is obviously not the same, but when the main PS4 TV isn't available, it is a good alternative.

I do wish Netflix would update their app to support it, but the last Netflix app update was before PSTV even existed, so doubt that will happen. Also I don't understand why the PSP Genesis Collection isn't compat or the Vita Tetris game. So there are things that are annoying, but it is far from useless.

Yeah, the whitelist thing on the PSTV is so damn stupid, especially here in Europe where it's restrictive as hell. A lot of games that doesn't work here, work in North America. Like the FF PSP games, Valkyria Chronicles 2 and so on.

Talking about Valkyria Chronicles 2, it was on the compability list, it should have worked. I actually contacted Sony Europe about it and what did they do? Did they fix it by adding it to the whitelist? Of course not, they simply removed it from the compability list and called it a day, sigh.

This is such a wasted opportunity. A classics style mini console with access to PSOne,PSP and PSVita games would be amazing IF IT ACTUALLY FRIGGING WORKED.
Couldn't agree more. It could have been the perfect PS1 Mini + more, but instead it's crippled shit thanks to the whitelist (and several PS1 classics still missing from the EU PS Store like Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Threads of Fate, Xenogears and so on).

It obviously has a certain appeal but its so messed up. I've never heard much good about it other than it's cheap.

Been meaning to hack it ever since that external hard drive hack came out .
I bought it knowing full well what I'd get out of it. Never regretted it.

The whitelist is this device’s biggest issue; no one would argue against that, but there are also so many other odd omissions or exclusions.

-PSOne emulation is locked to a shitty aspect ratio with the lovely Vaseline filter. All display options present in Vita PSOne (and PSP) emulation are absent. You’re stuck with an improper aspect ratio and a blurry image... seemingly for no reason.

-The mic/audio port on DualShock 4s still isn’t supported. Audio through the TV or an unlisted group of Bluetooth headsets is your only option. Why is it this way? I’m using two Sony products (two PlayStation products) to interface with each other.

-Third party controller support is nonexistent. Controllers that work fine with the PS4 and PS3 just don’t work with the PSTV. Forget using a PS3/PS4 fighting stick on the PSTV. Only adapters that mimic the DS3 will allow a work around. Why?

Is it any good for streaming PS4 games?

I want to stream like I do with my steambox using Ethernet

How is it? Only reason why I want it.
Remote Play on a laptop over a shaky WiFi connection is still worlds better than Remote Play on an Ethernet connected PSTV. This should be the last reason you buy one.

I'm pretty sure it's a technical limitation of the Vita hardware. It's the same reason the NES and SNES mini only output 720p (which are built on hardware from roughly the same era).

It's a great option for people who want to play Persona 4 Golden without getting a Vita. Killzone Mercenary also looks great on it.

i really wish there was a better version because My vita is slowly dying and is effectively irreplaceable nowadays and a lot of the games I own will be lost!

Looks like i overpaid at £35 but with the number of PSONE classics I have, I don't feel bad

I feel much better about my purchasing decision now I've seen all the games that DO work on it, rather than think about those that don't.

Cannot believe the amount of restrictions that piece of shit has. I've only used it once, and it's since been gathering dust behind my TV.

This has to do with the limitations of Vita hardware. The original OLED Vita included a data port that was capable of outputting at a maximum resolution of 1080i. This is a zero effort device on Sony's part and the inherit ability for Vita hardware to output a video signal is the only reason the PSTV/VitaTV exists at all.

Does the PSTV do PS1 better than a PS3?
Emulation is better with regard to input latency. Though the the aspect ratio and filter issues I mentioned earlier in the thread means everything is going to look pretty awful.

so i got one of these new today off amazon, staggering how tiny it is. rather impressive.

but i went looking for one purely for PS4 remote play, ive had hit and miss experiences with the feature over the years, back when i had a vita, and also on an xperia tab. mainly they worked on my local WLAN, away from home though ... not so much success.

Anyways - this thing works.

got it home today and hooked it up to a spare hdmi port on my tv, and found a Ethernet cable and plugged it into the switch i have in the lounge coming off my ethernet over powerline adaptor. And after changing the settings for response time and image quality to high .... i was impressed, minimal lag, played FIFA and everybodys golf with no issues at all.

But i only have the one tv in the house. the reason i brought this was to see if i could take it over to my gf's place and basically get a second PS4 out of it. to be honest i didn't expect this to work, but here in NZ fiber is pretty common place now , esp in the cities .. so figured that combined with the fact that unlike the vita or my sony tablet in the past .. this thing is wired ... it would be worth a shot.

And so about 5 city blocks away from my place i hook this tiny box up; fire it up ....go straight to remote play ... and fuck me this actually worked. basically the same experience i had in my own lounge, fifa and everybodys golf totally playable. solid and consistent control. no drops.

this device was ahead of it's time pretty much. i feel highspeed internet is finally catching up to it and its crazy sony pulled the plug, maybe they should re-brand it as a PS4 extender and focus on that, its worth it for that alone imo.

Ironically this is the way its meant to be played. Many people, myself included attempted to use the Vita and thinking direct connections would be best. Nope. Have your Ps4 connected right to the router and uncheck the box to allow direct connections and its solid. I have a vita TV for my other TV. Cost me $20 and I basically have a second PS4 when my main TV is in use.

That's really fucking impressive. I am not calling you a liar, but a small part of me says I need to see that to believe it. My experiences are great in home, PS4 wired, PSTV Wireless, direct unchecked, but five blocks away? Damn!

It works and works well. I do the same when I travel or go to other family's home. I've even done well from work.

oh it certainly works will have to post some video on youtube i think, but no at my gfs place i have the PSTV connected by ethernat to her fiber router. and my PS4 at home is also wired, well over ethernet over powerline down the hall way, to my fibre router.

so basically what i'm saying is if both locations have fiber, and you wire both devices ; this thing works well enough for me to now be buying A Way Out to play at hers.

I've had one for years and never tried this. I'll hook it up in my bedroom see if it's any good in Wi-Fi.

They really are pieces of shit. I'm to this day still salty about buying 2 of these fucking things when they were new. Even wired it worked like shit for playing any game that is a persistent online game like Destiny. It's OK with games that are not always online but not great. Does anyone make a microsd adapter yet for this thing at least?

Wouldn't the Vita hack work on this?

If you have network issues, turn off WiFi in sleep mode settings. On a regular Vita it disables low power WiFi, on the Playstation TV it also improves wired connections for some reason.

There is no reason for a MicroSD adapter. If it's hacked you can just use a USB drive on it.
