Canadian story — interesting. So basically guy changed his gender from Male to Female on his birth certificate and Drivers license in order to save $1100 a year on auto insurance. In Alberta you don’t even need a doctors note to do so.

Edit: as per mod request below, posted this story because it’s hilarious imho. It also does show how allowing anyone to claim any gender legally without proof of transitioning can lead to societal problems.

I think the story is hilarious.

On a serious note though it does show the downside (or upside?) of being able to claim whatever gender one wants. It will be interesting to see if the insurance company turns down a future claim by this guy.

So now, all the women pay the same higher rate than the men driver.

Not everyone that chooses to change their gender identity is doing so for such ridiculous reasons. Many people are doing so in an effort to feel normal in their own skin. Casting doubt or suspicion on that very serious decision based on a story like this is not only unfair to those who do it for genuine reasons, but it also casts a shadow of needless humor on a very serious topic.

Actually I saw the story on /r/metacanada,

one of Reddit’s conservative Canadian subreddits. I thought the story was hilarious so I posted it here. I also think humor aside, this story does highlight some of the challenges of allowing anybody the ability to change their gender without proof of transitioning.

It has everything to do with what you said because you seemingly think harm reduction comes through silencing undesirable opinions.

I feel like I’ve had to say this a lot recently but that’s not how burden of proof works. You made the claim so you are responsible for backing it up. In the case of false accusations, they are often not prosecuted and so there is nothing to run a statistical analysis on. However, as a starting point, you can look into the case of Brian Banks.

Instead of making this about the individual case, treat it as a microcosm of such issues where society and systems are not yet in a place to deal with spectrums and only have binary choices. Also bear in mind we are now seeing the underlying discrepancies in single sex incarceration and competition for example. There is a discussion to be opened up; even if threads are opened in bad faith (I'm not saying this one was) it doesn't mean they can't bear fruitful conversation. If you choose to not acknowledge such failings then the system buckles under pressure in years to come when the numbers are more prevalent. When issues come to light they do need to be acknowledged and discussion on how to resolve. How would you stop such people making a fraudulent claim?


This is nothing new by the way. People have been able to identify as what they want in many demographics without being challenged. When presenting at healthcare institutions, if you tick a box for identifying Chinese or Black even though there is serious doubt, it is what is recorded. Same as religion.


There will always be people out to game the system. There will always be cases where 'pioneers' need to set aside their own personal struggles and think of the wider implications of their actions.
