Shenmue I & II HD Announced [PS4/X1/Steam] 2018

Not overly fond of the same changes laid out in the Digital Foundry video. Definitely going to be a platinum & done title for me. I might keep a shenmue 2 save though since my shenmue 2 copy is kind of screwy during the epilogue.

So DF has said its the Ultimate Version.
No mention of the problems people mentioned, weird

I played an hour.

I can’t believe it.

I was going to speed it and get to the sailors immediately but was so transfixed with the details in hd that I just forgot about the time and mixed Liu’s Barbershop.

My only issues so far:

Echo voices
Bloom (turned it off)
Black darks (turn up the contrast but not too much)
Lack of full analog movement like in Shenmue II for I for which is baffling.

Also, holy shit just tried II and the controls are a massive downgrade from the Dreamcast and Xbox versions. You can only run with the run button?! Why?! Also the cutscenes for II are so fucking small it’s immersion breaking.

Playing this has bought something to my attention, where are the Classic Sega games on the PSstore?
No outrun, Virtua Fighter, Sega Rally, Daytona USA, Crazy Taxi etc, theres nothing

Just got the achievement for buying Wang Guang Jr a drink. It actually made me lol. Exactly what I called him for all these years.

The more I think of what they did with II the more I feel disappointed. II is my absolute favorite game and I can’t believe it has small ass cutscenes and downgraded controls and this is being sold as an upgrade.

The cutscenes looked exactly the same in the original version...

But they really took away the analogue control? I mean I personally don't care cause I like the original control scheme, but that just seems stupid to take it out...

Have you seen the cutscenes compared to I? They’re much, much smaller.

And yes they did.

I've come to a conclusion, Nobody wants to speak to Ryo and he knows they're full of shit.
NPC "Sorry I can't speak to you now, I'm working."
Ryo "is that so, umm."

"I've been too tired lately, ask me again some other time..."

Like what kinda bullshit is that?

Those people are generally extras. Like you’ve got the foreigner blonde lady and the businessmen. Eventually you’ll learn who is who and who to talk to.

My favorite is the chubby drunk guy, or the one ganster looking dude at the harbor who keeps yelling "I don't know shit!"

Or the incredibly aggro Japanese schoolgirls:

Ryo: "Excuse me, I'm looking for-"
Schoolgirl: "HUH?! GET OUTTA MY SPACE YOU PANSY FACED GEEK!"

That tends to be my response whenever someone asks me about the day the snow turned to rain, or where to find sailors.

Watching that first hour of gamplay, where hardly anything happens, I'm somehow compelled just as I was almost 20 years ago.
Can't wait to play this again and get some trophies.

This game is sooo good. Looks amazing too. Controls are kinda clunky, but I'm slowly getting used to it. Anyone else encounter this glitch early in the game?

Finally got my hands on this! I nevrr thought I'd see the day when I'd be playing Shenmue but here I am.

Just starting this game. I've been experimenting with the HD Render on and off, I have to say it looks much better off.

Anyone else find this to be the case aswell? I'm no graphics expert but everything looks like it meshes better together with each other whereas with the HD rendering on everything looks cheap and disjointed. That's the bestvway I can describe it.

Not yet had a chance to read this thread from start, but is this release worth/loyal to the originals, that a first time player will get the as intended experience?

One of the arcade games is broken QTE Event one. Once it says press up on the left analogue stick, no matter what you do it fails you.

Also is Space Harrier easier on Yakuza 0? Don't know if I'm out of practice but can only get to the start of the third level on this 😂.

They screwed with the colors changing the atmosphere and removed the sepia filter during flashbacks but other than that nothing too egregious that I'm aware of. It's not ideal but it's acceptable if buying a DC is out of the question.

I really wish they would stop pulling this crap with remasters. I had to skip the HD remaster of the REmake for a similar issue.

So far I've done 3 hr of Shenmue 1. It is for the most part, solid, no slowdowns, no loading times. Cleaner fonts and an upgraded interface.

One change that I appreciate is the Save Anywhere feature is also on Shenmue 1. So you don't have to run back to Ryo's bedroom to save every single time.

What else is there to say? It's just that it's a very old game and you'd be surprised at how very little action there is, at least, at the start. Shenmue I is more adventure-focused.

Does the audio just seem kinda worse overall? I booted up my dreamcast copy and it sounds better than this new release. Pretty disappointed with that.

The audio has some pops and crackles at the end of some speech, it's very noticeable on headphones and I'm not sure it was there in the original. It also dips out on occasion, I was practicing my moves in the parking lot and every 3rd or 4th move would just go mute. Hopefully they can patch it later, but it isn't really affecting me too much.

So whats the verdict? Worth getting? Outside of buying a dreamcast just for the jap original voice-overs, or going via PC emulation..?

The english dub certainly sounds very off-ish. That's for certain. That's why I've been playing the game with japanese voice overs.
I've also seen glitches at least three times in ingame cutscenes. Kinda random-ish, but other than that it's playable.

To answer RAIDEN1 RAIDEN1 's questions:

I think it's worth getting this compilation. Easier to get the PC version than emulating it. I never got Shenmue 2 to work properly on NullDC.

Here’s what I noticed about the audio.

So I’m on Dobuita and then suddenly the music stops and then I could hear it again. I noticed that the closer I get to Tomato store and the Christmas bells next to it the more the music mutes. But when I walked away from the store and the bells the music could be heard again. It seems like it’s hsving trouble compensating between sound effect and music?

Played for a couple of hours. Looks good but can't decide if I like the HD rendering more or less than the original. The dithering in the original resolution is kind of distracting but at the same time it looks more cohesive.

Anyway, game has the same charms I remember from back on the DC. But I see how tedious it must be for many modern gamers. It's more like reading a novel than playing a game.

Shenmue on PS4 Pro is a buggy mess. For instance camera focuses on random item during cutscenes and I can't even see the actual cutscene!
Other annoying glitches like controller not waking up in the pause menu, game saves not always working............
How could they release this with so many bugs?
There better be a patch coming to fix this.

Thanks.

But what did they do wrong by the REmake? Again, the PC release was my first time.

I'm happy with it so far. It's not a perfect port, but I'd say it's the best way to play the game today. 1080p, locked framerate, 16:9 during gameplay, Japanese and English voices, cheap price and super fast load times.

I think I'll wait and see if there are some compelling mods for the PC version. I've played the game to death over the years, even in HD via Demul, so playing the remaster (in its vanilla form) right now isn't really all that exciting.
