The next XBOX really needs to impress me in order for me to buy it

I love my Xbox consoles. I have the original, a first generation Xbox 360, an original Xbox One, and an Xbox One X. I have over 250 physical and digital titles in total across my systems. IMO, I think the current Xbox One controller is one of the best controllers of any generation.

With all that being said, I really need to be impressed with the next Xbox console in order for me to buy one. As the Microsoft continues down this path of having every Xbox game and accessory fully compatible with the PC on day one I see no reason to ever buy another Xbox console (outside of replacing a failed existing console). Maybe even then. Perhaps MS will release BC for old XBOX games on the PC.

I might as well buy a used mid range PC and play the same games. Perhaps this is Microsoft’s console strategy all along? Move people away from consoles and back to the PC.

Am I alone in my thinking?

Microsoft knows they need to impress with the next generation Xbox. They have an uphill battle ahead of them and it’s sounding like they’re prepared to deliver. We’ll have to wait and see if they do.

I buy a console base on if it has single player and exclusive Japanese games. In early last gen I chose 360 over PS3 for that very reason but this gen PS4 and Switch both delivered but Xbox one just didn't at all. If this going to be case again next gen then I wont be buying the next Xbox as well.

When I think I probably play more 360 games than Xbox One games on my Xbox One, they really need to impress and they need to have some game I want to play.

I'm honestly in the opposite camp. I don't expect shit for exclusives from xbox, but I'm really excited about all their backwards compatibility. I might just get the nextbox for the BC alone, don't really care about anything else...

Edit: Although OP has a great point, if they make all those BC games PC compatible than fuck nextbox lol

I'll get one, because I get everything, but I don't know why. I've never been interested in Xbox exclusives. I don't care for Halo, Gears or Forza.

Last generation there was a lot more for me. Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, etc were exclusives I was interested in. Not to mention games like Mass Effect and BioShock weren't originally on PS3.

This generation I bought an Xbox One near launch and, to date, own two XB1 games - both indies.

Until Xbox decides to focus again on great single-player experiences, they won't have much for me. But I know I'll cave and get one again.

I'm kind of in the same boat but on the Sony side. I've had an X1 since launch and it's great. The lack of exclusives and Japanese third party games is detrimental though. Yes, Game Pass is awesome. Backward compatible games are awesome. Having the most powerful console is awesome. All of those things are great but I purchase consoles to play the latest games. I don't have time to play anything other than a new game every couple of months and I like for those games to be new releases. If Microsoft doesn't come out swinging next gen with some legit exclusives AND third party Japanese games (an example of this is something like ni no kuni 2 or dragon quest 11), than having the most powerful console won't matter to me. I'll start off next gen with a PS5.

Well if they have several exclusive games that interest me then I'm in. I automatically know I'm going to get that with playstation or nintendo but not so much with xbox , at least not for several years since I'm not into shooters or racing games.

The next Xbox needs to meet the standards that I've expected from my consoles for the past few generations - a wide variety of exclusives that I'm interested in.

Been a console gamer since Atari 2600, have owned every single console made ever since. Love my Xbox one X, love my PS4 pro, have large digital libraries for both, so im getting whatever home console MS and Sony come out with next.

Neither Microsoft or Sony has to impress me. They did that a long time ago. I'm buying until they no longer exist or decide to pull a PS3.

Just hard to beat Sony.

Even with Gamepass and EA access they still couldn't beat Sony. Playstation is just too strong of a brand in Europe and Japan

They just need to go back to the early 360 days and pump out games. That's it. SP. MP. Different genres. They do that out of the gate with the next system, they will be fine. Don't try to revolutionize shit or try something outlandishly wacky. Games first and then everything else second.

Good on them for picking up studios. Now put them to work.

If PS5 is backwards compatible with my PS4 digital library, then it's impossible for me to be swayed to get a Xbox 2. I have invested heavily in digital games this gen, moreso than last gen when the 360 was my main console, and the capability of revisiting said games with extra performance like Xbox one x now sounds awesome.

As long as I have a PC that can run their games I can't see buying one. Gamepass is appealing as someone that doesn't replay games though, so that's the one thing that could sway me back if the collection grows and price stays right.

I'll definitely have a Sony and Nintendo console though as their first party games are my favorites.

For me it's easy, i'll buy whatever console doesn't force me with GAAS crap. If any of them decide to go stream only then that one is
a no buy for me.

The thing is, Microsoft doesn't care if you're buying their consoles. They just want you to stay in their ecosystem, whether it be PC, mobile, or console.

And I don't see how this is a bad thing. More games available for more people.

They need to recapture the magic of the 360 era. I was just watching the latest DF Retro video, which happens to be about the 2005 E3 Xbox 360 reveal, and it reminded me how bold Microsoft was back then.

XB1 was an extremely hard sell at the beginning of this generation and it's even more so given how a lot of Xbox exclusives are on PC. They need to come out swinging next gen and given the way they're talking that seems like what's going to happen. Time will tell, I guess.

I just don't understand this mentality.
BC on XBTwo is useless to me.
I already have an XBOne right there under my TV with nothing I want to play on it.
When I have BC on my shiny new box.....there'll still be nothing I want to play on it. But even if there was, I already have an XBOne anyway, so I'll just stick with that.

I think that might be most of us. I think even for those that bought the XONE. With them putting games on PC, I don't think they can really do anything to make me buy a XB in the future and maybe that is for the best.

MS for a while has been fighting Sony with "exclusives" and they never really needed to, they also have PC, so it just never made sense to hold a game back from PC, to sell XB, when the software itself is where the money is in the first place.

So Nintendo owns Wii U and 3DS...BOTH got games.

So Sony owns PS4 and Vita...BOTH GOT GAMES!

So MS needed to just look at HOW THEY are set up instead of trying to beat Sony at a game that Sony doesn't even need to play, they have ode to put PS4 games on other platforms as Vita can't play them, but they do have one to put Vita games on PS4 like Gravity Rush.

MS needed to just focus on what MS can do regarding this, not just trying to mindlessly copy Sony as it just never made any sense. With all games now going to PC and XB, they can sell more software (clearly less hardware) but over all still make more money on software. I see zero benefit to them skipping PC. Its their OS. Sony doesn't have that Luxutry and neither does Nintendo.

Sony owns the home console market, not much will change that dominance
Nintendo owns the portable market and clearly with Switch, not much will change that
MS needs to focus on owning the PC and Console market where they can, not chase something that they just can't catch up to.

I mean, by default, I don't even think they can sell more hardware then Sony if they keep putting games on PC, but that is just their situation, JUST like Sony isn't going to sell more portables then Nintendo, look at how well the Switch is doing. So MS needs to focus and carve out where they are good at vs trying to mimic other situations that they are not even in.

After the wii u, the switch needed to impress. And it did so i bought it.

After the ps3 (i was in the boat of it being just a more blander 360 with a controller i hated) the ps4 needed to impress me. And it did so i bought it.

I mean isnt this common practice for most people?

lol, I had no issue with the Wii U other then its lack of games. I think its biggest issue was that 3DS existed and clearly it wasn't portable. So Switch for me legit is just as "impressive" as PSP connected to a TV or 3DS etc The best part of Switch is not even hardware, its simply that Nintendo is putting their games on 1 platform vs 2.

I dont understand this whole xbox exclusives on PC sentiment. MS doesnt cate where you buy/play their games. Windows PC’s and Xbox consoles are both MS platforms. Thats the whole point of “play anywhere”. Play and buy games wherever and however you want.

huh? Who is saying its a bad thing? I don't see anyone in the thread really saying its bad, simply that many of us won't buy the next XB if we just hae a PC to buy MS games, which clearly MS would be getting money from so.....I'm not really seeing anyone say much about that other then they won't buy a XB, as it makes logic sense not to. I mean, I won't but I'll still buy their content on PC if its good, so I don't see much really saying they won't support MS, simply they won't buy XB so clearly they get a "ecosystem" exist lol

Yeah. Any console needs to be impressive for me to buy it.

I'm waiting to see which way the wind is blowing first before buying this time. I'll likely wait for the first revision. Good sales then as well

What Xbox needs are exclusive games that I can't get anywhere else, including PC. That's not the way they seem to be trending now.

Their PC efforts are great and I wish more companies would realize I'm not going to buy a machine that has a third of the performance of the machine it'll sit right next to.

I fully expect MS to unveil a new console in Jan or Feb with a fall 19 launch. They need to be the guys establishing the "next gen" narrative with new hardware and games. If they let Sony unveil first then barring any giant enemy crabs or boomerangs, MS will be screwed out the gate.

My problem with next generation is the very high chance that the consoles will be even more close to each other specification and content wise. My point is, I feel like buying both consoles will be almost pointless since 96% of games will be released for both consoles and they will most likely have an even smaller visual discrepancy. It’s getting to the point where I am wondering if we should have a one console future IF consoles offer barely anything over the competition.

I'm not understanding the point of this post.
"Next Xbox needs to impress in order for me to buy it."
Your reply is??? Sales? Brand loyalty? Japan?
What's your point, and how is it relates to how the next Xbox needs to impress you?

Not trying to attack you, I just see sales numbers thrown around everywhere as some sort of proof that product A is better than product B.

I'm thankful for the option to play those games without the restrictions of a console.

Yeah I have no reason to buy another Xbox but I've played and have given Microsoft more money than I have in a long long time ever since they started investing in PC.

?? OP never stated regardless of what they do, simply that they need to impress them as that makes complete sense if that is what is holding them back.

There is a reason why XONE is selling less so....

Not alone at all. Xbox exclusives heading to PC just discourage me from buying it. Rather spend the money on a good graphic card.

Microsoft already release the most powerful machine. But where are the console exclusives?

EXACTLY! I know 100% of what you mean. I'll still buy from them if they make some great games on PC, but many of us have very little reason to buy a system to play content thats already on another system we own.

The "might as well just play on PC" narrative is strong on Gaf, which is a harder core and more technically savvy user base, but for the majority of gamers a PC is a huge stumbling block.

Your post is accurate and on point. Exclusives will always exist, but crossplay is a huge step towards what you're suggesting. That's why it's important. The next gen coming up could take that step if Sony would get on board. If people keep making excuses for them, and accepting Sony's hilariously bad excuses, then it may very well be a step that has to wait yet another gen for us to take.

If you were impressed enough to buy an original Xbox one, they obviously don't have to do much to impress you.
