Sony announces Playstation Classic Console

That is fucking tempting tbh. Even if it's just collects dust.

EDIT: WAAAANT, is there a full list of featured games? I hope RE2 is included, it's damn hard to emulate and I want to replay it every now and then.

The idea and the pricing is great, but 20 games is just not enough. There are at least 50 games for the PS1 that deserve a 9/10 score or higher. I just hope that Sony doesn't plan on offering pricy game packs to be uploaded through USB (or new PS1 consoles with new preuploaded games).

Today, we are excited to announce that we are bringing back the original PlayStation experience in a new miniaturized version – PlayStation Classic! The console will come pre-loaded with 20 classic titles, including fan-favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

The mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, and it emulates the original’s look and feel by featuring similar controllers and packaging. Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all. All of the pre-loaded games will be playable in their original format.

Available for pre-order at select retailers across the US and CAN, each unit will also come with an HDMI cable to connect to their TV, a USB cable, and two controllers for local multiplayer within compatible titles. PlayStation Classic will be available for $99.99 USD (MSRP) / $129.99 CAN (MSRP) on December 3, 2018 – a historic date for all of us at PlayStation.

*AC adaptor sold separately

3D graphics ages very badly as opposed to 2D pixel graphics... I rather keep the sweet memories of these games in my head than destroying those memories by playing them again now and then realise how bad they look and play today....

As someone who mostly played Nintendo consoles growing up, this is pretty cool.
I mean my brother had a PS1 with Tekken 3 and a bunch of Final Fantasys, but that's it. Also I wasn't allowed to play on it, lmao

I've been playing some old PS1 classics through PS3 (they're fun!), but a package like this sounds real neat.
Oh and I need the original PS1 boot screen every time i start it up, please and thank you.
Hell yeah, still the best boot up noise

Jumping Flash is the one I'm most excited about from that short list of games included.
I hope they include more of those early games.

The lack of DualShocks is a huge disappointment.

no analog sticks lol

it was kind of hard to go back after they released the dualshock tbh

A bit concerning is the lack of a analog stick. So any games that required it is not going to be on the list.

Can you play MGS without a analog stick?

Lol, I might be the only person in the world who was excited to see the controllers are the originals and not the ones with analog sticks :D
The OG PlayStation controllers are the best. I didn't care for the sticks even back in the day.

And to Agent_Carnage, yes you can play MGS without the sticks. I always played it with the original controller. Even today I play with the d-pad whenever it's possible. I even play Mario Kart 8 with the d-pad.

Europeans getting screwed again. It costs 76€ in Japan and 85€ in the US. Importing from Japan (and thus paying VAT twice) could definitely be cheaper (for sure if you order it in Europe, probably around the same if you just pick it up).

If they would have released something similar to the psOne slim with the monitor adapter thingy I think I'd be more willing to bite the bullet a basic ps1 doesn't do it for me, considering how things are they should just make a PSP Classic.(rip the Vita)

Gees Sony are such followers in the industry. They never come up with anything original.

Also instead of actual BC they AGAIN just want to charge you for games you probably already bought at one time.

Of course the fanboys will trip over themself given the chance to give Sony more money for stuff they already bought before.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Cool I guess, but I already have a PSX, PS2 and PS3.
all of those play PSX games.
Do you what doesn't and it my main platform?
I don't need another box under my telly, I need my current box to be able to play them.

Those long posts don't cover that red neck boy
Really interesting stuff, although i still have my old trusty PS1 - 20 years old at this point and it still does not budge. The longevity of this thing is quite incredible.

That being said, i wonder what this will run internally. Will it be the same AllWinner R16/Mali400 MP2 combo like the NES/SNES Classic's will pertain to? Will it run Linux just like them?

If it is similar, then Homebrew might be a walk in the park. Stuff like Brutal Doom and even Quake 3 could become a reality.

That's what peeks my interest: Not so much the console, but the possibilities of it. Interesting.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Sony is the only one locking Fortnite accounts to their console. Neither MS or Nintendo do this.

Can’t argue with that. I am not liking how Sony holds the entire industry back and how anti consumer they are, but right is right.

Meanwhile I'm still waiting for PS1 BC on PS4.....

What a waste of resources, material, energy. We don't need to accumulate more crap at home. I know people want something physical for Xmas, but... Just sell these games over and over again on a digital platform (ps4), you'd sell even more of them at a higher price than $100 for 20 games.

It's sooo nice but I'm afraid I'm not going to spend 90 Euros for a PS1 with 20 games.
I think I've learned my lesson after the NES/SNES mini.

Only 20 games... that is so disappointing considering that PS1 had lots of must have titles, from a massive library.

Plug and Play retro consoles existed years before Nintendo did the NES mini.

While true, the "mini" has been popularised by Nintendo. Like a lot of things are.

I mean look at Sega, they have been making them with atgames for a while... but they have "announced" a new one that's basically the same as the previous one that no one took notice of before the "mini" craze...

Sony has cross play with Nintendo and PC, it’s Xbox One they don’t want to play with.

Well that's just simply untrue. All of it. :messenger_medmask:

Darkness no more
20 games isn’t much considering I probably already own a bunch of them as PSN downloads. I’ll probably pass on this unless the rest of the list is really good and stuff I don’t already own.

First off I love Sony/PlayStation on the whole this gen BUT this is not good news.

On its own it's not a bad idea but holding back the games from the PS4 and not even including an AC adaptor is just one in a long line of small grievances that are starting to add up...

No Refund system
Very few PS1/PS2 era games
No Cross Play
No EA Access

Thank god the exclusive games have been so good...

Hmm, I'm kind of torn on this one. I don't have such good memories of PS1 games like I do with the SNES, so that already lowers its appeal. Also, I'm starting to think to myself: How many of these retro systems am I gonna have to buy at this rate? I can't even connect them all to my TV at the same time. The fact that they haven't announced all 20 games yet is a bit concerning as well.

I still dig these retro systems, because I like having that authentic experience with the actual controllers and stuff, and I think these systems are a great way to get into retro gaming without any hassle. It just doesn't seem like all of them are a great deal though.

I really hope this doesn’t just have Crash, Medevil, jetmoto, etc. I hope it has a diverse selection of games not just a bunch of sequels.

Cool. Im a sucker for this type of stuff.
Too bad it only comes with 20 games because PS1 had some amazing amount of greatness.

Also wished the controller would be the DS but watevs, this one (the original) for me atleast does feel more 'nostalgic'.

#SonyToo
this needs original Ridge racer and not Rage racer even though rage racer was a better game and original wipeout, I think Doom should be included to as this was the breakout FPS after goldeneye on consoles and realy showed what a good FPS could be like on a console

As many have pointed out, this is lame. Sony should create a good emulator on the latest console. Also PS3 is a better system to play old games. Also, depends on the games, 20 and just announce 4? Wtf...
