Rumor resurfaces: PSN name change option appears to be coming soon

Reported by Jason Schreier on Kotaku, but apparently his sources are actual developers, not Tidux.

Kotaku article

Three people at three different game studios, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to talk to press, said that in recent months they’ve been fixing bugs, tweaking settings, and ensuring that their games are compatible with Sony’s plans.
A fourth person who worked for a game studio shared a photo, obtained from internal Sony documentation, of a PSN profile containing the option “edit username.” The documentation was a guide for changing one’s name on the PlayStation Network, that person said.
We don’t yet have any sort of timeframe for the feature, and those developers have suggested that as a result of how PSN IDs were originally implemented (linking your account ID to your username rather than some sort of universally unique identifier), retroactively fixing old multiplayer games might be a time-consuming and difficult prospect. Sony did not respond to a request for comment.

Man so many complained about this, I wonder how many will actually change their profile names? I'm glad it's coming however, hope people are ready to pay for the privilege as they were saying.....

As for me, I will NEVER change my ID....

Wonder how the PS3 will handle this unless Sony is planning on discontinuing service on the PS3. Its bound to happen eventually.

Funny thing is I had a PSN name I really liked, but forgot my password for it. This was before trophies existed.

So I created a new username that I dislike that now has thousands of trophies and large amount of digital games tied to it.

I hope they start deleting old inactive usernames so I can get my old user name back.

Man, hope this gets released for you all ASAP. For me it will be useless. I always choose a proper name for this kind of stuff, will never need to change it.

I just made a new one, it was really hard, I had to make a new email and everything! What disaster!

Glad I never gave a fuck about trophies and didn't have to wait around years for this feature.

Some of us actually have friends on our friends list.

Yeah it's pretty difficult to add your friends to your new account, it might take upwards of 5 minutes even!

Like whoa, talk about a struggle!
Or I can just not bother ~50 people and save myself the time because I'm not a child who needs a new username every week. Plus, I have digital games on my account because you know I actually play games.

We shouldnt have had to wait in the first place. This feature was common place for xbox, nintendo and steam for years. I put a lot of time into earning my platinums as well as 50% of my games being digitally tied to my single account so it wasnt worth making a new account just to fix a silly typo or a nickname thats no longer relevant. More options should be welcoming news.

Outside of trophies you still have friends (although those can be reconnected), purchases, subscriptions and saves tied the profile. Sure you can keep your old one around, but that'll result in you being split between two accounts. I hope that you understand that that's not an ideal situation.

Having everything under one account adds a lot of convenience for the user.

Nor will you change you stance on Console gaming lol

to be fair this is something Sony needs to have done a good while ago, FairPlay to them for getting it done

Sony had name change before (when they found the Id to be offensive they would change it) , but it really messed up online gaming. I remember doing a Destiny raid with a guy that his psn id in the voice chat didn't match the one that showed in the game, he said Sony changed it because it was offensive, but it always showed the original in online MP games.

I don't think it's a huge secret that FW 6.0 on the PS4 added support for this, but it's currently disabled while developers catch up.

Has this allready leaked?

It was leaked a few weeks ago, but I don't think it was publicized widely, or maybe people didn't catch on to the passing comment made in the thread (I don't recall where it was anymore, sorry). It was supposed to be announced at PSX but that didn't happen so no idea when they'll announce it now.

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm not insider, I just picked this up in a passing comment and it explains a lot. News about devs preparing for it makes sense now.

Well PSN has been around for over 10 years. It makes sense that, for example, at 23 you no longer like or feel represented by the username you chose when you were 12.

My gamertag on Xbox was something like Fbh_Bankai because back when I created it (2006...?) I loved Bleach (the manga/anime). If I were to go back to Xbox at some point I'd definitely like to change that (though I have no attachment to achivements and had no digital purchases so I'd probably just create a new user)

Hey I play games too! Just on better platforms ;)

Oh certainly not ideal, but I've seen folks waiting out for many years and sitting on a name they dislike.

Like brap over here, he entered this thread for a reason and is clearly very frustrated. Sony really needs to implement this feature so the digital games his parent's bought for him that he mentioned don't get lost in the ether.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.

Wow. I always assumed this was the culprit, making the username the user identifier, and having already released a lot of client-side code (aka games) that kept that as the identifier in their internal databases. I am just astounded at how bad of an architectural decision that is. Who designed that schema? Some kid fresh out of college?

Yeah, that would also explain why they have been shutting down a lot of game's barely anyone plays now on the PS3.

This and the decision to allow cross play were two of the biggest complaints that I consistently saw on message boards across the internets about Playstation. I wonder how much of this was their way of taking ammo away from Microsoft before the next generation of consoles came out (and to appease vocal consumers in the here and now).

When did Microsoft introduce this feature again just for comparison

it was present in 2006 for sure, possibly sooner for the 360 launch.

Better late than never for Sony though, as plenty of people clearly want this on PSN. I just wonder if Sony will also follow MS's move of clearing out old unused names. PSN was free on ps3 and there's thousands and thousands of names never touched again that can be wiped and recirculated. MS has done this in wave a few times to open up good names and I changed mine in 2011.

Well whatever it was how was anyone defending their decision sensible back then? What is truly remarkable is just how difficult and time consuming it is for them to implement this.

I didn’t think it was possible due to the way your PSN ID is encrypted into your trophies? Unless that was a load of old bollox I read somewhere.🤔

Trophies weren’t a thing when PSN launched, so maybe they hamfisted them in, but if that’s the case they have to know a way around it, since it didn’t exist when early adopters made their ID.

If people were complaining, they weren't defending it, were they?

The vast majority of people, even the ones who didn't find console crossplay that important were glad that Sony caved.

As for technical difficulties with the name change feature, anyone with any background on database design will tell you that if you make a fundamental fuckup early on, you will suffer the consequences for years to come. Data migration and corrections to web API are difficult and delicate operations.

I still don't get how they didn't just go ahead and introduce a Steam-like "Display Name" feature that overrides your PSN handle in every game that supports it. So literally every game since they introduced that new SDK account property to grab the users account name in 2015/2016 (?)... ? The SDK notes hinted that you should now use that property instead of the old one for displaying a players name. That could've easily been hooked up to a display name feature and all your headaches are gone.

I guess it's harder to monetize that though so full name changes it is now, probably?
