It's not about the game, of course. I can guarantee there are around a million issues in this "family". If he sat down for a moment to think about it, he would realize that, too. But why handle my own problems and take responsibility? Let's jump into a video game instead, avoid the big issues by creating other ones. Anything to help me avoid facing the reality of the situation (and even worse, the reality of myself). You encounter this over and over again in individual or family therapy sessions, in varying degrees of scale.
This basically isn't game related either. Just happens he played a video game while this went down. Could've happened in any situation in their daily lives. The kid will suffer the most, longterm.

Any reason? There are plenty of reasons to hit men as there are plenty of reasons to hit women. Whether you should act on those impulses is another matter, of course. It's about individual action, not about a genital war. If you truly can't think of any reason whatsoever to hit another human being, you simply haven't been exposed to enough mistreatment in your life. Every person has his or her tipping point, even the ones who stand high and mighty and declare they would never do such a thing.

My wife and I are having a lot of trouble having kids. Seeing shit like this just makes me depressed. Jackoffs like these two can pop out kids left and right that they don’t even want.

For some people it's a bigger crime to use hyperbole like "there's never a reason to hit a woman" so they rush to bring up examples of how maybe a woman at some point will be trying to kill you or whatever so you have to get physical then or die, rather than the wife beating in the video which they rush to say maybe it was justified because she threw stuff. All those bruises on the abused husband! Yikes.

It's not about who did what first. You are defending someone who hits another human being in front of their own children. Someone takes on the greatest responsibility life can offer - having kids - and then pisses all over that by making sure he/she drags the kids deep into their own personal hell of a relationship. Might seem weird in this equality kind of world where you'd think it should 100% game for men and women to smack each other equally, but that;s not how the world works.
