Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen announced for Switch today.

Release date: April 23rd
MSRP: $29.99 USD
Nintendo Online not required.
No new features as far as I can tell.

I missed these games the first time around. Are we excited? Is this #PerfectOnSwitch?

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
It's okay, deeply flawed game but you can get hours of enjoyment out of it. Everyone praises the combat but for me it had the wrong balance of RPG stats vs action when later end game enemies had so much health the best thing to do was grind and spam your most powerful (in dps) attacks over and over hoping they die before you sleep rather than any exciting skill based combat as in Monster Hunter which people compared this to back then trying to make themselves believe it's the better game to have on their consoles vs the then portable MonHun. Glad they've come around now MH is on there too. The best part of it I think is the world being clearly hand crafted so the exploration of it is fun with nooks and crannies and bonus stuff to find all over in fun to reach areas. Otherwise not much RPG stuff there either.

Say what? Neat! Despite its flaws Dragon's Dogma is my favourite open-world game, so it's good to see it reach a new audience.

Crossing my fingers that this is Capcom gauging interest for a sequel.

AYYY this was the one Switch port I wanted most, HECK YEP I wanted portable Dragon's Dogma. SICK

As someone above pointed out, this game is deeply flawed but enjoyable. I would love to see a sequel that irons out the rough edges.

Fucking YES! Love Dragon´s Dogma and will happily give it Another go. Haven´t done Dark Arisen-expansion at all too. And the joy to bring it with me on travels is a bless.

More people playing (or replaying) this incredible game can only be a great thing. Hopefully the next game Itsuno said that he looks forward to announce "as soon as possible" after he finishes with DMC5 is Dragon's Dogma 2.

This is why we can't have nice things and new games. It's literally all your fault and only yours.
Usually i'd tend to agree with you but once or twice in 10 years (or more) there will come a game or two that will hit you so hard with awesomeness and "speak" directly to your gaming tastes that you will want to buy the game on every platform and version just to say "thanks" to the developers and to give them a message that you want more like that game.

Dragon's Dogma is one of those very special games.

That one I was not expecting. I always wanted to play this one, since the back on the Wii / Wii U days. I just hope that this time Capcom released this one on Retail, my SD card is almost full.

So, I think is okay to wait for that Devil May Cry collection.

I've never played it but I know a lot of people who enjoy it and it's good that you guys can enjoy it once more but this time on the toilet.

Cool. It's a flawed but really fun game. Hopefully it runs at stable 30fps... I remember last gen consoles (or at least the PS3 which is where I played) really struggled with it

The game that run like shit on last gen is coming to switch?

Yes, ran like shit on consoles with 512MBs of RAM and GPUs from 2006. I'm pretty sure it'll run just fine on Switch if it's ported over with effort. Not sure if I should have interest in it or not though, I heard very mixed things about it, very love it or hate it. On the plus side, it's only $30.

Funny that you said that.
I have it on PS3, PS4 and today I'm strongly debating if I should get it on PC since I have the specs to run it at 4K max settings.
I would say go for it, haha. It plays nice on PC! Have bought it for PS3, PS4 and PC as well.... contemplating now if I should buy the Switch version. I really hope that Capcom still caring about Dragon's Dogma means that we'll get a Dragon's Dogma sequel eventually.

Played this a bunch when the PC version hit and had a ton of fun. I enjoyed the combat and exploration, and even got a kick out of the nonsensical story. Only thing that bugged me was how many of the bosses in that bonus dungeon on the island were weak to magic. I went in the complete opposite direction making a rogue, and wasn't keen on dumping my play style to deal with those bosses.

Great...I finally bit the bullet and bought it on PC. Bad timing for me, I’d rather play it on Switch.

Dragon's Dogma has flaws in areas other RPGs effortlessly get right.

And resounding success in areas other RPGs don't even know how to make it work.

Incredible game. One of the best action RPG ever.

I started it on PC recently after wanting to play it for a long time. I played it for about 15 minutes before dropping it for another game. It just felt janky and had too much of a Dark Souls vibe.

I realise I need to give it way more time and I plan to one day, but what am I missing?

You are right, the way quests and inventory works are janky. Definitely not a good first impression. But DD has incredible redeeming qualities:

* Great combat, like few studios could achieve. Capcom is making brawlers since the 80s, they know how to make gorgeous animations, tight hitboxes and everything a good combat system needs to work properly. And they sent one of their best to do the job: Itsuno, the DMC3 director.

The grab mechanic never gets old and is more important gameplay-wise than it seems to be at first.

* In depth RPG system which complements the action part very well. This is a very hard thing to do since the action part and the RPG part are, more or less, at odds with each one on most games. But here we have a robust number of status effects which can change the combat in cool ways, like blind, poisoned, frozen, possession, tarring, petrification, etc, and even drenched have consequence in the battlefield.

Weigh affects movement and stamina, lots of classes with different skills, armors, items. Enemies have vulnerabilities like a proper RPG.

* Awesome exploration without insulting the player's intelligence. Go where you want but the monsters and items are not scaled by level so you need to be careful. Don't forget to stock oil for the lantern because the night is like real night. Very bad visibility and mosters are more dangerous. Some of them will appear only at night. Every trip is an adventure, specially without ferrystones.

* It is awesome to hire other player's pawns, trying to make the best party for the moment. There is one you can customize, not only in appearence but class, items and personality too. They learn and can do better tactics when facing a know enemy or giving you hints for quests or in battle.

Paws make the game have a kind of sense of community. It is cool to change your pawn to be be a better companion for you and other players. You can reward good paws with gifts and you can rank them too.

* Foes have diferent tatics. An ogre is more prone to capture female heroes and flee, harpies like to pick someone, fly to a high position and drop them, will o wisps will possess you and your companions. It has a great RPG basis, makes a lot of sense and this translates in awesome fights!

* Awesome art. Very good taste Wizardry-like art with a japanese touch.

* Look arisen! A goblin!

Thank you for the in depth explanation. I’ll definitely be giving it another shot. Hell, it took me 17 years to finally give Baldur’s Gate a proper go. Lol.

Thanks for the rundown. I was on the fence after all these years, so I may pick up the PS4 version in the near future.

It was a title I always had an interest in due to liking the artwork, but just never got around to picking it up. Too many games, lol.

Awesome! DD has its problems, but I think everyone who is marginally interested in action RPGs should give it a try! Not for everyone but those who like it, like it a lot.

It's the Devil May Cry main series director, one of the top kings of action gaming and polish in action gameplay taking a crack at an open world RPG. Does it have the best story? No, but it works. Does it have the best sidequests? No, but it works.

But damn, it rips Skyrim's head off and shits down it's neck in terms of gameplay. The combat and monster behavior is light years ahead of what most RPGs can even dream to accomplish. And I will just leave you with this awesome gif to show off the magic. It has one of the best implementations of magic I've ever seen. Also, when the game gets dark at night, it gets really dark - as in the lighting is actually great. You can't see well without using magic to create some light sources and tougher monsters come out. On top of that, this is one of the only RPGs that actually has real bosses and boss fights, because it's from the motherfucking Devil May Cry director and the company that makes MONSTER HUNTER.

The game is not at all perfect, but it's totally worth it to log in and hack and slash for many hours. This game was also particularly impressive when it first came out, as it was one of the first well playing open world games ever. Now we have a few other examples like Spider Man. For PS3 though from Japanese studio trying their first time making an open world game - it was a triumph.

And all the melee and ranged bow combat is just as slick as the magic.

Completely agree. The gameplay in DD just annihilates everything in the genre, especially Skyrim with its clunky and outdated combat system. I remember how a lot of game journalists were knocking down on Dogma, comparing it to Skyrim and called it inferior in every single aspect, and even go so far as to say it was a downright clone of it. It was just another one of those moments when you felt game journalists have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. I wonder if some of them even played the game.

I love this game! So hoping one day we get a proper sequel!

I've played this on PS and PC, and will play again on Switch, although I'm kinda worried about the port....fingers crossed!

Ended up getting it today.
Currently installing.
I think it plays at 1440p/30fps on the PS4 Pro.
I have PC specs to run it at 4K/60fps with all settings on high so I'll see how much of a difference it makes.

Have fun! Do you play it with a controller? I can vouch for the Xbox One controller. Feels good!

I wonder if it will run well on Switch.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t. It originally came out last gen and Switch plays last gen games fine for the most part. I think Dark Souls on Switch runs well. Skyrim too.
