I was watching Commando with Arnold Schwarzenegger the other day & it made me so proud to be a man. It's so 1980's & empowering, so I decided to cut some wood in a manly manner & carry a huge log on my shoulder.

mckmas8808 Think you're being a tad disingenuous. I personally don't give any fucks whether the lead is male or female, and I doubt many other people do (how was Wonderwoman received around these parts?). I do however object to privileged Brie being racist and sexist. It comes back to that MLK quote again, and yes I absolutely agree with it, though I'd extend it to observe that we should also not judge on the contents of a person's pants.
That weak ass mofo needed a chainsaw!
Couldn't use his own fuckin hands to chop it down??
So many on this board talk about SJW this, whiny babies that, and that other forum that shall not be named yet don't understand that they do the same crying themselves.
At some point, you can only respond to people in the language that you use. It's frustrating to see someone say in this thread, "how the fuck does this shitty movie make you proud to be a woman". That's literally what that poster above wrote. Like honestly.......no one here can have an honest discussion if that's where the conversation is started. Especially when the movie hasn't been released yet.
The stupid logic that many are using here is that Brie wanting to speak to a diverse cast of media members is bad. As if there aren't more women or people of color that would love to do a sit-down interview with a lead actor/actress of a Marvel movie.
It's legit totally fine for her to want to give "other" media people access to her own time to promote a movie. Yet, here we are on GAF where people are upset just because of that. So many on this board talk about SJW this, whiny babies that, and that other forum that shall not be named yet don't understand that they do the same crying themselves.
Her statement actually doesn't bother me, probably because I've seen the amount of unfounded hate and misogynistic comments on this film way before she even said this. And yeah, it was from a bunch of toxic white guys for the most part.
I heard angry white males are putting fake reviews on IMDB to attack this film before seeing it. It's kind of sad, but believable because so many Gafers are the same type of small man-children who are threatened by everything so their response is hate and internet bullying.

Take a step back from the keyboard people, let others enjoy something, it won't impact your life.
False equivalencies. Pointing out that something is stupid is not the same thing as crying over imagined oppression.
In defence of that, admittedly poorly-worded, post, I think that was in response to people saying the film made them proud to be a woman, which is patently ridiculous. It's as insane as watching Terminator and saying Arnie makes me proud to be a man. Sure we're both white guys but we have fuck all in common, for starters he has a shitload of money and a hell of a lot more muscle than I'll ever have. It's ludicrous to identify with someone based on race or gender. If I identify with someone in a film it's because there are elements of my personality, or elements of my own struggles, but I'd rather empathise with someone than identify with them because I sure as hell wouldn't be an interesting topic for a film.
Re diverse: Your definition of diverse is rather limited and ironically undiverse. Ultimately the people interviewing are not differentiated by colour but by other things entirely. Class, life experiences, personalities, political beliefs. I'm willing to bet 50 satoshis there's no increase in diversity on any of those scales as a result of Brie's choices.
Is it whining to be annoyed that people are being sexist and racist? Was MLK whining? Is it whining to be the group of people who stood by something through thick and thin, despite people calling them nerds, geeks, and treating them like shit, only to discard them when it becomes cool, all while telling them how toxic they are for objecting? And the thing is, yes sometimes people get a bit angry about stuff - and the reason is simple. The SJW approach to listening. And if nobody listens people get frustrated and start getting angry (and no this doesn't excuse the nasty shit on social media but I will point out as always that it's not confined to one side).
Not false equivalencies at all. You just agree with one, yet disagree with the other. That's all. You don't think bigotry exist so how can we have a real conversation about this?
I don't understand this logic. I'm sure there are a LOT of people who would love to do a sit-down interview with a lead actor/actress, the amount of people who get that chance are an extreme few, no matter what their skin color is.As if there aren't more women or people of color that would love to do a sit-down interview with a lead actor/actress of a Marvel movie.
I think you are misunderstanding what people are saying when they say, "I'm proud to be a women" after watching something like this. This part takes empathy to understand but I'll try to explain it. When someone gets picked on for large parts of their life, it's 100% understandable when they see someone they can identify with do something great. It's like being a whimpy nerd all your kid years. And then seeing a movie where the weak nerdy kid wins by getting a sexy chick and winning in the end. For a moment that nerdy kid may feel proud of the things that makes him a nerd and may realize that, "yes I am cool in my own way and I should stop caring what people say about me."
And about diversity I know your thoughts on it and we disagree and that's fine. But it's 100% okay for her to give people an interview that normally wouldn't get that oppuntunity. Diversity isn't limited to race and gender, but those two things are part of diversity. To say otherwise is just ignorance.
Swings both ways, just look at the anger from the other camp directed at the new Ghostbusters sequel for trying to appeal to the fans of the original movies.Take a step back from the keyboard people, let others enjoy something, it won't impact your life.

Is it the skin color that determines who gets to interview these people, or is it their expertise that has given them their position and consequently this access ? If there is evidence that people of color have the same/better expertise/experience and are continously being passed over by white people in these positions, then it would certainly indicate racial discrimination.
But if that is not the case, why would the skin color be of any importance ? Unless the reviewer is racially biased (which would be bad), I don't think a review/interview would differ due to the skin color of said reviewer/interviewer, meanwhile their actual expertise in the subject most certainly will.
I don't think someone has a particularly interesting perspective on something because of the color of their skin, it's a superficial attribute that says nothing about you as person.
Now you're usually a decent guy, we don't agree on some things but I respect you as a debater, but the bolded is a bit.. it sounds horribly close to implying that I don't do empathy and then patronising me by saying you'll explain it. I hope that's not the case.
In terms of identifying with things, I said earlier that I can kinda see it if it's actual characteristics of the person. My struggles a socially-awkward weirdo mean that I might see myself in a character with those same struggles, but the colour of their skin doesn't do that. Again, you seem to be going against MLK's vision that a man is judged by the content of their character and not the colour of their skin, and for me those words are the gold standard to which we should all aspire.
If you're giving interviews to people who wouldn't normally get them, why not give those interviews to working class people? Maybe to people from a range of political viewpoints? Why must the diversity be in gender and colour? Why can't we just live by MLK's words?

It looks like they didn't. She just said it in that interview. Can you not read well? She had to get people involved to diversify the interviewers.

Why ? There are a lot of professions/interests that skew male (and the same for female), and as for 'whites', AFAIK they are the majority ethnicity in the United States, and were likely even more so when the generation that are currently holding these positions were born. But if she saw the list and it was mostly white dudes......I doubt "those" would just so happen to be the people that were the best qualified to give the interview. Logic just doesn't work that way.
Because her argument is that if you have a certain skin color/gender, your actual expertise/experience be damned, you are still the wrong person for the job.Not sure why this is such a big deal that she wants to work and think outside the box.
Russia huh? So explain the other 400 years of America then.
You so mad that a superhero movie lead by a woman is going to make hundreds of millions of dollars aren't you? Relax bro, life will go on. You'll have your 500 millionth movie with a white man saving the day right around the corner.

If women/poc are underrepresented in this field compared to the number of them having this career path/expertise then yes, this is very indicative of discrimination, but if that is not the case then why should we now incorporate discrimination based upon skin color/gender ?

Why would you assume they aren't ? Those in the position of reviewer/interviewer has reached said position for a reason, and I very much doubt it is because of their skin color/gender which has nothing to do with your skill/expertise in reviewing/interviewing. Also why would you assume someone would be equally or more qualified based simply upon their skin color/gender which is what Brie is arguing ?Why assume that if the interviewer isn't on the Hollywood "normal" script list, that they must be less qualified?
I don't know what this refers to, but the idea that if you disagree with something you have to be 'angry' is simply not true. I disagree with you, I'm not the least bit angry with you, or Brie for that matter. Were you people this mad at Nintendo targeting adults older the age of 55 for the Wii?

By her logic, the vast majority of NBA players being black would be due to discrimination, and not a result of a strong sports culture within the black community which largely favors basketball, resulting in a large percentage of the most skilled basketball players being black. Which is my point, you can't just look at a discrepancy in race/ethnicity distribution and claim that it is the result of discrimination, it's really stupid and can lead to ACTUAL discrimination where there were none to begin with.
I want an NBA with the BEST players, despite the result being a very inaccurate ethnic representation of the country, it's not what matters, not in basketball, nor in movie reviews/interviews etc.

why is mckmas8808 obsessed with people being mad. well i know its the usual thing in arguments when you have a weak one or dont really know what to say other than a "u mad"
listen bub. i love being mad its my favorite emotion
wtf why are you trying to control my emotions baby. let me rock in my disgust of todays society. sjws want to control everything jeez NOW MY EMOTIONS
aye baby just saying wat we all thinkin mayn
What?
Why would she reach a larger audience by being interviewed/reviewed by people who has a specific gender/skin color rather than their expertise at the job ?Again Brie is NOT arguing that she wants to interview with different people because they are better due to their skin color. You aren't reading any of this correctly. She clearly wants to reach a wider audience.
I've always liked movies with female characters until recently. Like no I'm not a self hating white male so I won't watch your shitty movie or support your shitty attitude. The "our turn" narrative is still going strong, like what, 40 years after Alien? There are less of these types of female characters, sure, but I mean, I could be mistaken, I get the sense that a lot of this comes from a place of "it's our turn now" and "oh, you boys mad about a female lead?", when it's like, no, we've enjoyed them for decades now.
repair to the errors from the past few thousand years
to be fair if it wasn't for this place or era I would have likely never known about this ordeal to begin with. I still plan on seeing it but the outrage in either direction is a bit funny.I've always liked movies with female characters until recently. It always is. TAKE ME BACK TO THE PRE INTERNET DAYSMaybe ignorance is just bliss, always.
I'll say that Obama (MLK, X, Tutu, Mandela, et al) attempted to make some effort of repair to the errors from the past few thousand years, well beyond American suffering. He / they tried. Trump, Putin et al made active measures to counteract these efforts and amplified strife to get us where we are now. Some people tried to heal, T, P and friends tried to make harm.
