Yes but there are hardware differences. The One X can be considered a “new” generation all in its own. It’s 4x more powerful than base Xbox one.

There are no exclusive titles for it, it's the same generation.

I’m curious why people seem to legitimately consider the X the fourth line of Xbox when, just like the pro, it’s just a mid-gen refresh.
I mean it’s like saying the next ps system will be the ps6 because the pro exists. On top of that it’s even called Xbox ONE X.

MS likely doesn’t think that way, it was obvious when they confirmed the existence of next gen (Scarlett) just months after the X released that they never intended for the X to be more than just a refresh.

OT: If the idea of rebranding Xbox as an alternative to PC continues my guess is they’ll likely just rebrand the next as simply Xbox. There’s no reason to continue any kind of numerical order as One was just a marketing term (all in one) just like the 360’s “full circle entertainment” (which was atleast a catchier name)

The Playstation is the only one that did that long term. Sega and Nintendo used different names too.

The Xbox is just a generation behind the Playstation to use true numbers. So the 360 and One had some focus tested corporate philosophy name instead.

Xbox never aimed for a numerical system just like Nintendo and Sega. Sony’s works because it’s a basic (and honestly predictable) thing to do.

The original story I read in a magazine was that the 360 was called the 360 because the Nintendo codename at the time was revolution and they were going up against the PS3 so didn't want to be called the Xbox 2.

I'm pretty sure next MS console will be called "Xbox One something" - they already said multiple times in the past they want to create one, unified ecosystem, and every new console will belong to Xbox One family. In the same way as every new Windows will actually be an update to Win10. So my guess is something like Xbox One S2 and X2, this would enable them to keep the XO family naming, with smartphone-like numbering. PS5 on the other hand is a given, there were confusions with PS4, since the number 4 in Japanese culture means something very unfortunate, but if Sony actually pulled out PS4 name after all, there is absolutely zero reasons to not to name next console as PS5, especially marketing-wise, since it will be and obvious successor to the successful PS4.
