PS5: Sony Confirms Cross-generation Play

Kodera-san added that backward compatibility is positive not simply because you can play old games on the next-gen console, but also because the community can enjoy the games together via cross-generation gameplay.

Basically you can play against PS4 players on PS5... obvious the same game in both consoles.

He is right. It is extremely important. People would be upset if they couldn't play their huge digital libraries on PS5.

But I guess my hope at the chance of PS1,2,3 BC for PS5 is basically nearing 0% now.

Man I would pay 100€ extra for PS1,2,3 BC for PS5 :(

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
Arrogant Sony being arrogant.

YEAH.....NOW.....they embrace BC. Sony clearly saw all those pro-MS fanboy threads and decided a major course correction was needed.

On a serious note: Good for Sony, although I never believed this was ever truly in doubt with the rise of digital purchases.

Good news. I expected this when they announced it was BC, but still it's nice to hear Sony confirming it.

Isn't that simply a natural expectation once you have backwards compatibility?

Nothing wrong with Sony confirming it. But, yes, it should be the expectation.

Physical BC for PS1-3 with these features would be great. We can already play many of these old games online via PSN copy + Share Play, so it's not a stretch to enable online multiplayer for old local-only games.

Expected but it's good to see it confirmed

I expect BC to maintain the same locked framerate as original hardware at least in MP.

Probably.
Only difference is going to be games which target 60fps which are probably going to stay closer to it on Ps5.
But that's already a thing between the OG Ps4 and the Pro so it's nothing new

You just said how people can do that: SharePlay would work for any BC game, unless the publisher vetoes it.

Indeed, I'm just hoping that the system includes those BC features for physical copies (unlikely, but we'll all find out together someday soon).

I think at this point it is an expectation. But within GAF-verse...

Lmao... Wasn't so long ago we hadn't SonyGAF arguing about how Sony didn't need it. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Pretty clear BC on Xbox was a success.

Watch it, i have been warned twice already for pointing out the hypocrisy on here.
As for BC, its great news, and how it should be going forward.

On relation to backwards compatibility , hopefully the PS5 support PS4 formatted external hard drives right out the box, would suck having to re-download or backup our currently installed games.

Well, saves are in psn cloud so, probably there is no problem or difficulty i guess.
right. I'm hoping it just runs the game so the save just works like before. I just don't know anything about emulation (if that's what they're doing) and how that could maybe effect game saves.

I meant if you bought a game on PS4 will you be able to play it on PS5 or do you have to buy it again. They never clarified it.

Yes. That is what BC means. Physical and digital will be playable on the PS5. I am positive the PS5 store will be not unlike the PS4 one already, just with a section for both PS4 and PS5 games in one big ecosystem moving forward.

I don't have a Pro but I do think it does... there is fps parity unless the dev patched a new mode.
It is. DF made several videos about advance of using a PRO only vs PS4, much of them in mulplayer scenario like Battlefield 5. PRO have a advance playing online games. Same as Xbox vs Xbox X with I must say is a tremendus advantage.

But that is why the performance is poor on base or because they have a new fps target?

Example on base CoD MP target 60fps but it drops a lot... so on Pro it target 60fps without drops.
That is different from Base running 30fps and Pro running 60fps... there is a parity in target.

Or at least it should have.

People can bash CoD as much as they want, but I kudos CoD because the perfomance on both base and PRO/X have almost similar perfomance when playing multiplayer games.
Dunno if is the target, but I get what you want to say. You say games that run at 30 fps on both PS4/PRO will run at 30 on PS5, at least in multiplayer. I agree, but its important to remind this scenario when most of Battlefield games have so much unstable framerate in base consoles versus PRO/X.

No, it was a good feature particularly because XBOX did not have many compelling games this gen.......Yet reports on XB1 shows few people even play BC on the console.......Sony did a survey too in PS3 days, it's not far off from there either.....And remember, that more people play BC games within the first 6 months of a console cycle...>After that it gets pretty slim to nil...

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017...games-are-less-than-2-of-xbox-one-usage-time/

The thing about Sony is that they always valued BC, this is the same Sony that put an entire PS2 chipset inside of PS3 and made the console more expensive to produce, the same Sony where you could play all your PS1 games on PS2........Sony could not do BC on PS4, because no matter how many virgins you would sacrifice to the BC gods, a PS4 is not emulating PS3 code.........That's why remasters and streaming was the go to function or people could just have kept their PS3 consoles plugged in.....For reasonable people with a modicum of understanding, that is a good enough reason, but for the disingenuous.........They are pretending that Sony hates BC and could have done it and they just didn't.....The very pioneers of BC is being jeered here, so yes, the irony of it all......

Next gen, BC will be no PS3 to PS4 matter, BC is very easy to implement, it will be done......There is no cell in the way.......Sometimes, I think people just wanted Sony to release a PS3 emulator on PS4 so it would run at 5fps, so they could laugh at Sony and try to score some forum points (damned if you do, damned if you don't)......It's fair to make points within reason, but to obsfucate the truth and not represent the situation as it is, means that you're not being fair and honest, all in the name of console wars......

I'm not sure what your point is? It reads like blah, blah, blah. Sony undervalued BC. Sony recognized its mistake. Rectifying. End of story.
