Yes, there were quite a few in the past 2 years, but across this decade they weren't in the majority or even a massive portion, they were about equal...

Since 2010
SAO
Overlord
No Game No Life
Youjo Senki
Mondaiji-tachi title too long
Knight's and Magic
the Smartphone one
Death March something
How NOT to summon a Demon lord
Master of Ragnarok
Kenja no Mago
Slime
and the upcoming Cheat Magician (I assume this has an OP MC).

On the other hand you had
Log Horizon
Outbreak Company
GATE
Hai to Gensou no Grimgar
KonoSuba
Re:Zero
Drifters
Shield Hero
and the upcoming Arifureta
and also Slime

That's 13 OP MC shows vs 10 shows that didn't solely focus on the OPness of MC like Log Horizon or Slime, or didn't have one at all and that isn't counting the reverse isekai shows (even though they are isekai and should be included).

The really generic, shitty ones... the bottom of the barrel are even less of an issue. I mean there were only six, maybe seven if you count SAO. The perception of "isekai power fantasy trash is dominating anime" is heavily skewed, because all the shitty ones came out in the past 2 years, but overall it's not that bad if you take a look at which shows came out over the past decade. It's worse if we include manga, though.
The dude said isekai boom of the late 2010s though. He never said it was a decade of isekai. How many of those shows in your power fantasy list aired within the last few years? Because I am pretty sure that is what he is referring to.

Power fantasy is a genre?

Technically it is a decade. A lot of them originally started in the early 2010s. The guy you quoted conveniently said "it's worse if you include manga" (and he probably meant LNs too) except when people discuss the isekai boom they're normally referring to a specific group of series that's premises are not so eerily similar. The reason why SAO, Log Horizon, Gate et al aren't included in the discussion is because you're sort of expected to intuitively know what's being discussed.

And ye, power fantasy isn't really a genre.

Sakura Quest unironically had plenty of soul. Probably the only PA Works anime I've enjoyed to date. No I never finished the horse anime.

if your not reading Chainsawman youre really missing out. This chapter had a real good "oh shit" moment for a shonen..

If you like big ass anime titties and isekai I recommend reading Shinju no Nectar

It's about a guy that gets transported to a world that is just entering their industrial revolution. It's more interesting than the rest because this world is a little different from the usual fantasy world, the MC uses experiences from working freeter jobs likes construction work to come up with tactical or technological ideas, oh and yeah he's empowered by drinking magical breast milk.

My kind of Fantasy.

Yeah, I'll say that I think PA Works has done some good stuff. I loved Angel Beats, sure it would have been better if it had been 24 episodes like I heard it had intended to be but I was still invested in it. Another was mostly good, yeah the final episode got really goofy in quite a few moments and the twist was a cop-out but it was a type of twist that wasn't really going to work in a visual medium, it worked better in the original novel. I haven't watched Shirobako, A Lull in the Sea, and The Eccentric Family yet but they've been frequently recommended by most of their viewers. I've heard Sirius the Jaeger is just decent/fairly good but has some sweet action scenes so I might check that one as well.

Oh I forgot that PA works did Another. I must have tried to repress that knowledge.

Held them in high regards based on Iroha and Shirabako alone. Angels Beat is really forgettable to me. Charlotte was decent. Uma Musume was fun blend of idol and sports. The movie they did with the eternal loli was meh.

On the topic of PA works, I am currently re-watching Kuromukuro and loving every minute of it, I wish a season 2 was greenlit because the ending left me wanting more.

Sakura Quest is such a wholesome show, it brightened my days while I was struggling with a shitty job, and I was sad when it ended. The second opening theme is fantastic. Shirobako is still probably a better show and I'm due for a rewatch as well.

I finished the first Deluxe Edition Berkserk book recently. Volume 2 comes out in the Summer and Volume 3 doesn't come out until the end of the year. I don't think there is any news about releases yet beyond that.

Debating to just start buying the books by themselves instead of waiting for all the Deluxe Editions to release. I really like what I've read so far.

I feel like the tournament for OPM should have been fleshed out a little more.
I am LOVING the show so far. Love the introduction of the characters. Love everything happening in the Arc. I can't wait to see what Garo is truly capable of. I love that Saitama is getting some notoriety despite the fact that it is still fairly shallow lol.

I wouldn't be able to live with a mismatched collection in my bookcase! The deluxe edition is just too nice to pass up and they did confirm (on twitter a while back) that they would release the whole serie in that format.

Good to hear they confirmed the whole series. I was a little worried they might stop making them before finishing.

Any recommendations for a fantasy or scifi themed anime appropriate for a family? We've been watching Fairy Tale with the kids because it's got a lot of action and no gore, which is what we're wanting more of.

One show that comes to mind right now is King of Braves GaoGaiGar, old school late 90s mecha goodness with tons of fun and little to no violence, but I don't know if it's available legally.
Or maybe Pokemon Sun & Moon?
Now that I think about it, you could try Ushio to Tora too, old school shonen that deals with yokai and stuff.

Ok, how can no one seems to be talking about Promare ? The movie just released today in Japan. In case you don’t know, it’s made by the same team behind Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill ( both fantastic series by the way ).

Promare-anime-image-0-1.jpg

I mean, just look at how incredibly colorful and slick the visuals look :

It’s basically Gurren Lagann meets Burning Rangers. Just by the color palette and the character design, it looks 1000x more exciting than any other anime releasing this year.

So looking forward to an international release !

I haven't heard this show mentioned in AGES same with El Goblino Slayer. It's all fake outrage made so Crunchyroll can get more hits I swear.
You haven't heard it in ages cos eventually people realised how shallow the writing is.

It'll probably be talked about again if the next episode is about what I think it is.

It's not really fake outrage when ANN went out of their way to trash the anime because of the false rape accusation.

It has been consistently in the Top 5 on r/anime, though and the rankings are determined by how each episode is rated and the number of upvotes.

That ranking's a joke. All it does is reflect the meme shows of the season that all the casual weebs and shitposters flock to. You only need to look at OPM s2 also being in the top 5 or the gild war between Kaguya and Mob last season.

Shield Bro had a lot of buzz going in and there was the numerous amounts of "omg I relate so much to naofumi, he's such a good character, raphtalia best girl xdddd" posts and threads reflecting how r/anime is a trash heap with no shortage of incels (incidentally, the type of audience shield hero attracts). 12 episodes later enough people were commenting on the stupidity of the writing, or how it became a shallow loli harem that others started bringing out the anti circle jerk shields because critiquing shows like SAO that are inherently bad isn't cool.

What? OPM S2 has been getting hammered with negativity. One of its episodes averaged out in the 5's.

Incels are people who want to get laid, but cannot and feel entitled to it. You're telling me that you know the personal lives of a lot of Shield Hero fans?

Not to mention, the incel comment doesn't make sense because the anime features a lot of strong female characters. Raphtalia and Filo are able fighters, and most recently, the queen came in the clutch. Wouldn't actual incels hate the show instead? Or is this one of these moments where "incel" is thrown around loosely merely because of its negative connotations and how the MSM appropriated the term?

12 episodes later enough people were commenting on the stupidity of the writing, or how it became a shallow loli harem that others started bringing out the anti circle jerk shields because critiquing shows like SAO that are inherently bad isn't cool.
But harems involve multiple female characters vying for the protagonist's attention romantically. So far, there has only been one who fits that profile, Raphtalia, and she's not even a loli. Filo sees Naofumi as a father-figure and what Melty ultimately wanted was for Naofumi to trust her.

I'm also curious on what you mean as "stupidity of the writing". Way too many people throw out catchphrases for a show they dislike and then, not elaborate on them.

The incel comment doesn't make sense once you get past the surface level too. The core of the show is about an angry dude that's being healed by the platonic relationships he has with the women around him. They support him and in turn he empowers them to do what only they can. All of the most powerful and influential characters are women as well. You can even look at the Shield Hero's own position in the world. He's a champion of the demi-humans and of the commoners while he's being unjustly accused of a crime by a xenophobic society that treats non-humans horribly. There's a ton of things the author is throwing into the mix there that you can pretty easily tell who has and who hasn't actually engaged with the work right away.

That said, the writing does have a few problems but that has more to do with the fact the series was written with the long-game in mind and that the adaptation is kinda mediocre about highlighting certain aspects like it should. It does an amazing job in other places though.

I liked Goblin Slayer and am currently enjoying Shield Hero. Sure, it may not be Gundam or as pretentious as NGE, but they serve their purpose as entertainment. I still don't get the western outrage towards these shows.

It's still in the top 5 and that alone doesn't address my point in regards to reddits ranking being a joke.

Incels are people who want to get laid, but cannot and feel entitled to it. You're telling me that you know the personal lives of a lot of Shield Hero fans?
Ah, no.

Incels are involuntarily celebate. That's it. Yeah, there's that misogynistic bunch who got notorious on Reddit and think women should bow down to them but if you frame it by that definition then you're missing out on a whole range of people that the term at least originally covered. That said, it's my bad for not knowing that this place only sees them as women haters.

Also, you've got it backwards. I know incels, not shield hero fans and just because I said shield hero attracts them doesn't mean I'm saying "every person that likes shield hero are incels".

But harems involve multiple female characters vying for the protagonist's attention romantically.
A harem can refer to a group of women singled around one man (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/harem). This is why characters who aren't technically part of a characters harem are sometimes included. I'm honestly not going to get too deep into it because I'm not the one who made those comments nor do I care about the meaning of the term and how it should be used.

I'm also curious on what you mean as "stupidity of the writing".
Like I said before these aren't actually my comments. I was mainly paraphrasing what other people have said (note that I was originally responding to someone commenting on not having heard anything about it, I actually wouldn't be having this conversation if I'd realised you weren't the same person). But yeah, I think it's dumb.

I'm not gonna go too in depth, because I read the manga (or what was translated) like a year and half ago. Most of what I'm about to post is bits and pieces I remember from having seen some of the anime.
>relying on a game mechanic magic system on a supposed real fantasy world
Lazy writing but kind of a gripe on isekais in general, so meh, right?

>Generic "Run-of-the-mill" Otaku
Lazy writing again. You might as well write "self-insert template" on his forehead. But we haven't even gotten to the actual story yet and again, this isn't exactly new when it comes to isekais

>Naofumi goes from wronged party to angry resentful kid way too fast.
False accusations are a pretty serious thing, especially when it comes to rape. You do NOT get that hateful that quickly, especially when no one is in your corner. What you do get is scared. Very scared and in a foreign land where no one believes you. Shield Hero skips out on that. I don't even care for suffering that much but it was lacking. YouTube false accusations cases for comparison. Those guys look broken, not angry and that's in our world and with a support group.

>One-dimensional characters
I understand the citizens shunning Naofumi, but the other heroes not so much. Suspension of belief is repeatedly challenged in Spear Hero's case (I really shouldnt have to explain this) and when the other two act, it's suspiciously convenient for the plot. They go from uncaring people who treat the world like a video game to voices of reason after his duel with Spear hero then back to being uncaring. It's a reoccurring thing that varies from character to character and ultimately it gives off a vibe that each of them is designed to be specific way for specific reaction (versus characters from other stories who feel their own person thus events feel like they unfold organically). Raphtalia might be an exception but she treads dangerously close to being an Asuna clone in role and mannerisms.

Thats about all that I can be bothered with. It's exhausting trying to remember things about something you don't really care about. I didn't even get to Filo or Myne and the King, or the Wave of Catastrophe. Granted, I'm aware that they can be considered minor issues but all of them put together in a series that takes itself so seriously and can be heavy handed with the drama is pretty grating.

So, let me say this. I don't hate the series, the Spice and Wolf parts are pretty neat but there is validity when people say the writing is stupid/shallow/whatever general blanket term people want to call it.

Reminder I'm running off a year and half memory here so your not going to get much more discussion out of me.

It's still in the top 5 and that alone doesn't address my point in regards to reddits ranking being a joke.
It just went back in the top 5, not that it is still in the top 5.

Also your claim that Reddits ranking is a joke is still unfounded. It's nothing more than "I say X is this because I say so". It is not my job to prove that it's not a joke because I'm not the one who needs to prove the positive. Plus, your claim that Reddit rankings are a joke reeks of rationalization, aka wishful thinking.

Oh and btw, Shield Hero is #4 for this week.

This is merely a super simplified definition that omits the context. Here's a passage on Wikipedia that supports the definition I shared:

"Discussions in incel forums are often characterized by resentment, misanthropy,[1] self-pity,[10] self-loathing,[11] misogyny,[12] racism,[12] a sense of entitlement to sex, and the endorsement of violence against sexually active people.[8][9][13][14][12] The American nonprofit Southern Poverty Law Center described the subculture as "part of the online male supremacist ecosystem" that is included in their list of hate groups."

Also, you've got it backwards. I know incels, not shield hero fans and just because I said shield hero attracts them doesn't mean I'm saying "every person that likes shield hero are incels".
This is a strawman fallacy because I didn't say you were labeling every fan as an incel. The point I was making was that based on the nature of what incels are, it would not make sense for them to like Shield Hero based on its depiction of female characters such as Raphtalia and the queen.

Then why don't people call love triangles harems?

Like I said before these aren't actually my comments. I was mainly paraphrasing what other people have said (note that I was originally responding to someone commenting on not having heard anything about it, I actually wouldn't be having this conversation if I'd realised you weren't the same person). But yeah, I think it's dumb.
Then make your own arguments instead.

>relying on a game mechanic magic system on a supposed real fantasy world
Lazy writing but kind of a gripe on isekais in general, so meh, right?
So what constitutes as "lazy"? This isn't really an argument.

>Generic "Run-of-the-mill" Otaku
Lazy writing again. You might as well write "self-insert template" on his forehead. But we haven't even gotten to the actual story yet and again, this isn't exactly new when it comes to isekais
However, the story doesn't really dwell on that fact anyways. I wouldn't call it lazy, but generic.

>Naofumi goes from wronged party to angry resentful kid way too fast.
False accusations are a pretty serious thing, especially when it comes to rape. You do NOT get that hateful that quickly, especially when no one is in your corner. What you do get is scared. This doesn't address the fact that Naofumi would die by the time the next wave comes if he doesn't do anything. He has no time to be scared, so he uses his resentment as motivation for his self-preservation. His goal is to return home and to do that means to survive. Him getting hateful makes perfect sense given the situation he was thrust into. Just because you cite examples where victims of false rape accusations don't get angry, that doesn't mean that it is improbable.

>One-dimensional characters
I understand the citizens shunning Naofumi, but the other heroes not so much. Suspension of belief is repeatedly challenged in Spear Hero's case (I really shouldnt have to explain this) and when the other two act, it's suspiciously convenient for the plot. Ah, this is a case of you not paying close enough attention and the anime leaves out several hints throughout. Motoyasu's biggest character flaw is that he too gullible and Naofumi points this out in Ep 19. Ren and Itsuki calling Malty out on her cheating isn't for plot convenience. They are acting according to their moral compasses that they grew up with in their alternate Japans. The reason why the nobles pretended that they didn't see anything is because of them growing up with the Three Heroes Church doctrine. In fact, the anime hinted at the religion as soon as Ep 3 when it showed the Bow, Spear, and Sword on the capital church's spires.

Also to complain that Ren and Itsuki go from uncaring people who treat the world like a video game to being voices of reason isn't logical. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive. They can both be voices of reason and still be fixated on the notion that the world runs according to their RPGs' mechanics. Them being the voice of reason after the dual was driven by something unrelated to their gaming knowledge. Not to mention, you complain about one-dimensional characters and yet, you end up citing 2 characters who aren't one-dimensional inadvertently.

Thats about all that I can be bothered with. It's exhausting trying to remember things about something you don't really care about. Well that lack of memory is quite apparent... If you want to make a claim, at least have the decency to prepare to back it up.

As someone would consider me an old anime fan, I think Rising of the Shield Hero is a decent enough show. Naofumi is a relatable character that isn't as one-note as a character like Tenchi who btw is a protagonist who comes from a harem series

The comment about the characters being one-dimensional in Shield Hero is one I run across in r/anime often but it also makes almost no sense, particularly for the other heroes. The author definitely spent energy them to show both their own strengths and faults in this part of the series despite being rather lean on the time they get in the spotlight.

Right, with Ren and Itsuki, they knew something was up when Malty attacked in Melty's general direction and told her to stand down. They actually investigated the political conspiracy that was gripping Melromarc after having observed how Naofumi acted in contrast to the kingdom's narrative and Malty's behavior.

Not to mention, the 3 heroes serve as parodies of the common protagonist sterotypes. Motoyasu is the happy-go-lucky harem protagonist; Ren is the loner (Heck, he's voiced by the same VA for Kirito); and Itsuki is the dude that is a bit too inspired from watching superhero movies (hence the funny Spider-Man references in Ep 10).

Not everyone watches every show every season, that's a well known fact. So naturally, smaller lesser known shows are going to be unfairly put up against the popular ones so the rankings are already skewered, see: Fruit Baskets and Run with the Wind. It's naive and superficial to trust a ranking that's essentially a popularity contest and not a measure of critique.

You completely ignored my Kaguya and Mob gild war point so I'm guessing you must not have understood it.
Oh and btw, Shield Hero is #4 for this week.
Okay? Are you deliberately trying to be provoking here?

This is merely a super simplified definition that omits the context. Here's a passage on Wikipedia that supports the definition I shared
lol I already conceded we have different point of views regarding this so why are we still discussing this? You have your wiki-definition on incels and I have my own experience posting with them. You keep arguing the book is black and I keep arguing the book is red, it's not really going to get us anywhere.

Then why don't people call love triangles harems?
Shrug. They're not mutually exclusive things I guess?

Then make your own arguments instead.
Now that's a cheap shot lmao. Especially, after I went and made the effort to do so.

Well that lack of memory is quite apparent... If you want to make a claim, at least have the decency to prepare to back it up.
Uh, people are allowed to comment on things they've seen before though obviously, it's not ideal in a forum of discussion and especially when they can't remember much. In this case I was responding to someone commenting on not hearing about it and I never even intended to get an argument about something I barely remember in the first place. As I said before I didn't realize you weren't the guy I originally quoted. If I wanted to get in a discussion about Shield Hero I would have done it when people were going in depth on it earlier.

And Shield Hero is on its 2nd cour competing against new anime. However, it still managed to maintain interest even with the new competition. If people don't like it, then they would not watch it and Shield Hero would go down in ratings.

I haven't seen the example and thus, I saw no reason to respond to it with no knowledge.

A Wiki definition with citations to multiple articles. Citing your own experience is anecdotal evidence which is extremely limited in scope. Not to mention, when there are multiple dictionary sites (albeit of the slang types) also use similar definitions, it's not a coincidence.

Not willing to maintain the same standard? Is Golden Time a harem anime, then?

You said that they weren't your arguments, so it suggests that you're not thinking for yourself but letting others think for you.

When did I say you were not allowed to comment? I am allowed to call you out for making a hasty claim without preparation. Simple as that. You believe in a certain claim? Then you better damn well be prepared to back it up.

In this case I was responding to someone commenting on not hearing about it and I never even intended to get an argument about something I barely remember in the first place.
Then you're not capable of giving a fair judgement if you're basing your opinions (of which you've admitted were not even yours) off of minuscule memory.

As I said before I didn't realize you weren't the guy I originally quoted. If I wanted to get in a discussion about Shield Hero I would have done it when people were going in depth on it earlier.
Then do your research first and then engage in a discussion, not rely on shoddy memory.
