managed to turn this thread on Etika into a shit on Era thread when it could have been a very nice introspection on mental health and social media

your entire post has been about message board drama then at the very end you accuse other people of doing the same shit you are doing.

putting you on ignore. maybe if more people ignore you this will be a thread about what you claim you want.

No, but it seems you are blind or don't know how to read. I don't see any jokes, comments or shitting on him for having mental health issues.
Not a comment about his mental health, rather of him acting stupid which his actions were stupid.
Not a comment about his mental health, but saying he was an asshole which again his statements were assholish
Not a statement about his mental health
Not a statement about his mental illness but questioning the legitimacy of his claim of mental illness to justify his actions. He has over th years done several stunts about his mental illness.

If my pulls from page one aren't strong enough for you, okay, I ain't gonna go sifting through the remainder, I just personally find your definition of "shitting on" to be pretty narrow, especially in the context of ERA wherein you get banned for sneezing. If pages and pages of "fuck him, why are we assuming he's mentally ill, he's just bigot trash" isn't shitting on him then whatever, I can't convince you. Further to that, finding examples of people not shitting on him in the same thread doesn't excuse the behaviour of the other half, and I have no idea what Anita Sarkeesian has to do with a mentally ill man that killed himself, but hey.

Ain't got the energy to fight you on this one, let me just say this; do you know how I know they're shitting on him? Even they admit it. Check the thread after he died. Pages and pages and pages of people calling out the very people who were shitting on him in the other thread, including a mod who is no longer with the site for that very reason. You're being wilfully ignorant.

Suicidal ideation and sudden onsets of severely erratic behavior that he regrets afterwards isn't about his mental health? You're still treating it all like a stunt after he committed suicide? What do you think mental illness is?

I'm going to qoute myself a gain just so my point won't get lost over many replies and retorts.
You're full of shit, I read through the first two pages and don't see anyone shitting on him for having mental health problems or making nasty memes at his expense, no different than him making nasty statements at the expense of gay people.

That being said, RIP Etika. I enjoyed a couple of his E3 reaction streams.
Whether you believe me or not, I came into this forum like I usually do to read interesting stuff or just catch up on stuff going on in the tech world. I saw the thread which was just tragic because I was aware of his mental problems in the past and was aware that he was missing presumed dead because of the last video he had made. A thread which could have focused on Etika and the issues surrounding mental health turned into shit on Era. I must admit though that I could have easily ignored it but seeing Evilore fan the flame kinda pissed me off hence I quoted him specifically since he posted the thread and of course he would get many quotes which would further move the attention from the issue to being about how shitty Era is. I chose to focus on the fact that, that forum is not different from this one, you will have shitty people as well as thoughtful people just like GAF, there were people who had thoughtful comments about Etika in that thread and of course people shat on him because well, pejorative words to describe people is not cool so I was ok with people shitting on him. I, however, did not see people shitting on him for his mental health problems.

I say all this just to say, I apologize, perhaps I should have worded my frustration differently. I did further derail the thread.

The reality is Era treats the world like it's a place where only perfect people with squeaky clean records can exist in. Where you're banned from talking about people they don't like, where you have people again shitting on a person and making jokes about a person that clearly has problems because they've hated things he's said before. ( obviously not EVERYONE was doing it but enough was to where it felt embarrassing )

Raising those points as a lesson on how to*not* act to others is not derailing a thread. It's to help prevent shit like this from happening again. People aren't perfect, people make mistakes, people say dumb things, the solution isn't to cast them out, it's to connect, to talk, to help understand why they are the way they are and maybe even change their minds. You never know what kind of situation a person is going through at home, you never know what can drive a person over the edge.... be good to each other. The solution isn't to ignore and hate.

This is the second person this week that i've heard about committing suicide, it sucks. It's just a fucking bummer reading people's comments when it was so clear something was wrong. Discussing the problems with online communities is a good thing because maybe we can help prevent future instances.

Woah this was the guy bullied by Era?

I know this is an old post. But I just want to say, cancel culture is horrible. It puts the stakes all in, on every little decision or action we take. There is literally no room for errors. It’s even worse, because when cancel culture strikes, it tends to go beyond just losing your job (which is bad enough), but it also paints you as almost sub-human. Damaged goods. So even if someone was able to survive and keep their job, they will have lost their reputation, their relationships and their pride.

I get it, if someone is a racist/sexist or whatever, they should be called out on it. But we need to let people have redemption. We have to let people grow, change and be forgiven (unless its something absolutely heinous like murder). This purist culture being propped up by the modern left (the radical left), is downright scary. Not a single one of them, has gone their entire life without doing or saying something foolish. The only difference is that they’ve done this behind closed doors or in their private life.

In the case of Etika, he was having manic episodes. He was suffering from a mental illness. Its hard for people to understand, but those with severe mental issues, will act out in severe ways during manic episodes. This includes saying horrible thing. But under the cancel culture, context doesnt matter. The fact that youve said something that goes against the ideology, you are branded for life.

And this is all bubbling up. You saw people literally foaming at the mouth with anger on Era, absolutely filled with hatred for him. Even when he went missing, and was suicidal. Some people had contempt, and literally did not care if he killed himself. All because he had damaged himself, in their eyes. This is beyond insane. There is being progressive, and becoming so obsessed with everyone being 100% in line with your ideology, that you are literally unable to drop your anger at someone, when they are in a moment of crisis.

This is definitely a wake up moment. Something is not right in this world right now. The direction we are going in, is not okay. People make fuckin mistakes. They shouldnt have their entire damn life blown up. While I know Erika’s death was the result of complex things, no doubt he said in his final video, that the walls were closing in on him. He basically talked about how his mistakes lead to his life being ruined. He was distraught over his past actions, and how it basically condemned him. Decisions we make shouldnt be the end of the world.

I don't have a clap emoji to give to you but you deserve it. This is a great comment that sums up everything that is wrong on our current society and the cyberspace.

Essentially they're becoming the evil they claim they hate. I've said it before what's worse Etika's offensive words or not caring if he kills himself? If someone chooses the fact that he's said offensive things before as the worse thing than that's a major problem in our society.

People like that need to get out of their idealogical bubbles and realize we're all human. It's just shitty. I didn't even know about Etika till this moment and it bums me the hell out to think he clearly needed help and for w/e reason few people seemed to take it seriously.

It just shows the flaw in their ideology. Because its a blanket approach. Its an all or nothing proposition. The problem with that, are that humans are complex. Every situation is not equal. In the case of those suffering mental illness, they act irrationally, because they ARE irrational. But when you have this all or nothing ideology, it literally can’t take into account the context of the situation. Yeah he shouldnt have said slurs. Regardless of what his intent were. But the context was that he was having manic episodes.

It does matter. It absolutely matters. But under this ideology, nothing matters. You mess up, you are out. You are not deserving of empathy. Because you are a horrible person. They literally look at those that make mistakes, as irredeemable. That is a horrible society to live in. And it also defeats the point. Like don’t you want people to change? Don’t you want people to see your point of view, if it’s supposedly so right? Don’t you want people to change, and for people to get along?

But they don’t want that. There is sides. You are with us or against us. If you mess up, or don’t agree with them, then they literally don’t want you by their side. They don’t want to work with you. They don’t even want you to be able to live your life in peace. Hell depending on who you are, they don’t even want you as an “equal” ally. So there is literally no room to screw up.

Social media failed Etika. Society failed Etika. Everyone failed him. We should not be living in a society where every little action we make determines our entire worth. Our future. It’s insanity. How we let this get to this point, is beyond me. I guess its because on the surface, its easy to get behind progressive ideas. I mean, its progress right? We are for good things. But the ideology has gone so far out of whack, and has become so radical, that we are creating mobs that are calling for blood. And a man with mental illness, literally felt like his life was beyond a point of redemption, because of that. And he had a mental illness which caused those actions. I mean fuck, what a world we live in.

And like I said, I wish every one of those people that called for his blood, I wish their entire life was recorded and on record. Every little second. And see how pure they are. See how they were when they were 11 years old. See how they were, when they were at their lowest lows. I guarantee you, all of us have done stupid shit in our life. All of us, have not been our best selves. The big difference is, NONE of them have that stuff online or in public. They get to screw up, and have it stay behind closed doors. All while they shame and go after those that make them publicly.

Great post. The cancell culture has to stop and I think it is on the way out although we may not have seen the last tragedy that it will play a part in I fear.

RIP. I saw a few of this young man's videos in the past and they were both hilarious as well as very energetic. This is very sad and very unfortunate.

I have no words for the "other place" and social media (they don't deserve my attention anyway), that haven't already been said better by others who can articulate it better than I ever could.

Watch his suicidal video you'll get the answer.

I just watched his interview with Keemstar, and I did come to the conclusion that he's delusional. The most relevant question Keemstar asked him was if this was all a publicity stunt, I don't think Etika would outright admit to that question. However as the interview continued on, some things Etika was saying made me question his mental stability, I do think he actually believes that nonsense he was saying, enough so that he needed to commit suicide to prove his point.

<snip> I chose to focus on the fact that, that forum is not different from this one, you will have shitty people as well as thoughtful people just like GAF, ... etc.
Unfortunately, as I've found, you would have been banned from ResetEra for making this post. But that's not true either, is it? The truth is as soon as people started disagreeing with you en masse, you would have been banned, and not actually had the chance to write this reply. Whether the reply was to clarify what you were trying to say or just further the flame, you would have already been silenced. GAF is pretty good about allowing discourse to happen, so it is inaccurate to say the forums aren't different, notwithstanding the population base.

Yeah the big difference is in moderation for sure. He/she is right that there are assholes on both (and all) forums, but over there only assholes with certain views are allowed to post their opinions. Here assholes of all stripes can post their opinions and will only catch bans if they’re going way over board, personally attacking members or the whole community or being outright bigots and otherwise breaking clear and transparent rules.

That can be a negative for some as it’s definitely not a “safe space” over here and the easily offended and triggered aren’t going to enjoy it. It’s not the bigoted alt right nazi den those idiots say it is, not even close. But you get opinions from all sides of the spectrum and some people just can’t tolerate that. Which is fine, there are tons of forums out there and they can stay on ones they enjoy and let us do the same.

Mind telling what his point from your perspective? Enough for him wanting to prove it, by suiciding? From years I've subscribed to him, livestream chats and reactions, he's certainly a logical guy until at some point he just blew up (self-destructing his channel), most people noticed something was off. He does makes stunts but not at the expense of other people's harm, especially if those things can broke his mother's heart. Yeah he loves her that much. He's surprisingly easy to be part of some deep discussions, and frequently giving advice and consoling people for the longest time on livestreams.

Also, his last video may not be a clear-cut answer to all things, but at least it answers a lot of questions. You really should watch that instead, or maybe his other random livestream records. Keemstar videos... let's just say I'm not the biggest fans of his, and I think watching that is not a great way to know a person's motive.

Edit On an unrelated note, fuck that Reera troll.

Fantastic post. Sums it up perfectly.

I think the worst part is people don't realize you sometimes say things you don't mean at all, it's not always something malicious that has always been there, it's sometimes something you just can't control. This is especially true when it comes to mental health, people are human. This is something I'm well versed with as my brother has mental health issues and something I deal with on a daily basis.

Just got back from family dinner. Has there been any new big news or relevations about the Etika suicide?.... (whether it's news from here or the net)

Or simply a continuation from yesterday with people chiming in with opinions?

Mind telling what his point from your perspective? Enough for him wanting to prove it, by suiciding?

To make logic to his rubbish would make me insane as well, so I can only assume what he meant, but to get a better understanding you should watch the video yourself and come up with your own interpretation. But from my understanding, he thought he was the Antichrist or God brought to this Earth to deliver death to all, he claimed he wasn't afraid of death, that everything is a simulation and predestine. Then Keemstar tells him if everything is predestine and simulation, why not just jump off a cliff?
So perhaps, and I'm making a big assumption here, the point Etika was trying to make was that life is a simulation and his death was predestine? Anyway you should watch this video and come up with your own conclusion, but in my opinion after watching this video I definitely believe he was delusional.

Damn I'm going to miss this dude. His 400k sub dance had me legitimately happy and excited for him. This one is a bit hard to shake. He said we would forget about him and move on, and though we will move on, forgetting about him is not an option. That could never happen.

Just watched. Yeah either that or he was trolling. I mean it could be one of his bluff, masking a more serious problem by escaping reality. The last couple of months before his death was a rollercoaster trying to figure out what he's doing.

never seen the videos but his haircut is sick, i don't see the high flattop very often. rip, and that era mod can eat shit forever.

It's so weird, I found one of Etika's videos a couple months ago in my "recommendation" list on youtube. At that point in time, I had no idea who this man was, nor have I ever heard of him previously. He wasn't even talking about games or anime, or whatever his wheelhouse is.

It was a video of him peering outside of his window and yelling about his human rights at some police officers. The man looked like he was scared.

But then, a couple weeks later, I see this video from a channel called "ReviewTekUSA" (a person that I do not follow, but get flooded with video recommendations for on a regular occurance) talking about the mental state of this Etika person. Saying things like "Go find some mental help, Etika. Go take some prescription medication. See a psychiatrist... bla bla bla" and so forth. Again, I had no idea who Etika was, but I did made the connection that Etika was that guy who was surrounded by police, while he was in his apartment.

Now I am hearing about Etika committing suicide. It really starts to seem like there is something more going on here than just a suicide (though, that is always the case with suicides). But then again, I do not know the timeline of events leading to this man's suicide or anything about him in general.

RIP, though.

Great post.

Cancel culture and hiveminded thinking like this reminds me of something..

I just saw these tweets, they attack the dude until he is dead and then pretend that they are sad that he died.

But let's not give to ERA another spotlight here using this thread

Use this instead.
You can check there they being exposed.

Let's remember here who Etika was and how he lived. Not the assholes showing their true colors by verbally attacking someone who was in real pain in his life.

R.I.P. Etika.

Damn, that's tough. I can only pray that life never gets that bad for me. Such a shame to see so many people end their lives. I had a friend commit suicide a few years ago. I just wish we all could hug these folks and let them know they're loved and not alone. We're all we got for real. But, even though I didn't know of him, this Etika, I hope he found peace in death that he didn't in life. Condolences to his family and friends.

-snip-

Godwin's Law? All communities can act on a hivemind mentality. It's human nature to lean in to the crowd so it's really not reasonable to make a Nazi comparison here.

That said, everyone deserves a second chance, deserves to be well, in mind and body. I didn't watch his videos, but no one should go like this..

Dumb part about this is they are taking my post out of context. At the time no one knew what was going on. In reality none of us really know Etika we only know what we see.

Not saying there weren't some jerks on ERA but I was checking this man's reddit everyday when he was in the hospital hoping to hear he got better. Sure I was annoyed when he got out both times and he trolled his own reddit afterwards but didn't mean I didn't care.

That goes both ways.

All we saw is you calling a clearly mentally-ill man an attention-grabbing piece of shit. Even from his “problematic” twitter threads it was clear this man’s head was not in the right place. But you didn’t care what was going on in his head, you saw that he did something “problematic” and therefore he deserved to talked about as if he was subhuman. That’s the ResetEra ideology.

That’s not a misrepresentation, that’s how you represented yourself.

People susceptible to the insane social media bombardment that happens when one promotes themselves on the net is tough situation for anyone to solve.

For things like installing Net Nanny on the net so kids don't see porn is easy. Install it, kids aren't supposed to see adult content. Problem solved. Adults can control kids.

But when you have grown adults, what are you going to do? Take over their PC and cellphone and lock them out from the trashy content on the net? Can the government (if they deemed people like Etika mentally unstable) just barge in and force them to cut down internet usage to save themsleves?

Oh goodie. Since this isn't ERA I can actually let loose a bit and call out ridiculous posts such as yours.

Oh I still think he was being a jerk no doubt. Like the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Even from his “problematic” twitter threads it was clear this man’s head was not in the right place.
Sure. Except although he does have mental issues, he was doing this for like 8 months on not just twitter, but on his reddit, on his streams. It's not as if he was never lucid. I think there's something to be said here that maybe it was in fact both things and maybe I'm allowed to be annoyed with that being that he has a bunch of kids watching and he never truly apologized. Mental health isn't a catch-all thing you can say to cover all issues. Sure it can contribute to a spiral but being that this man was saying similar stuff for years on his alternative youtube account he use to have, I doubt it.

But you didn’t care what was going on in his head, you saw that he did something “problematic” and therefore he deserved to talked about as if he was subhuman.
You seem to think I can't criticize but also be understanding of his issues at the same time. And no, I never talked about him as if he was subhuman lmao. I criticized his behavior which deserved it. He was trolling his own reddit for months when everyone was trying to give him love and support. He constantly tossed it aside and made a joke out of people caring about him.

That’s the ResetEra ideology.
Are you conflating me with ERA when that thread was mostly people like yourself? Not only that you have no idea who you're talking to it seems because the staff there really do not like me at all because I don't fall in line there like the masses and generally get warned often because my views differ from their consensus.

Either way, to coat everything as black and white as an issue such as this proves you don't know as much of the situation as you claim to.
