It seems that The Initiative was set up to poach talent from PlayStation.

Microsoft doesn't care about competition they are all nice and friendly now.

OK, whatever... What can we do? a sit in? I just hope they use their talent properly over there.

Who are you to say they didn't? Can you prove it?

Where did you buy those rose tinted glasses? I want them too! Let's just say that for most sensible people if they are to change job they will at the very least use the opportunity to negotiate a raise or some benefits increase while they are at it (obviously they want a project they prefer). I mean, I do it, if somebody comes to me with a job offer they better offer me more than what I am currently doing, after all they are the ones doing the recruitment.

If anything was illegal Sony would sue them, but employees don't belong to the corporation that hires them (yet).

Each to their own, but I've never moved a job to make more money.

Lol instead of making deals and exclusives, they bought out the devs itself. Make sense.
I assume by “bought” you mean they offered a desirable contract/employment opportunity that helped the dev increased their quality of life, so they accepted it.

Remember games are a team and some great devs have worked on shitty games and shitty devs have been part of great games.

I mean there's nothing wrong with that. Sony's the one who's more egregious, MHW PS4 only in Asia, limited crossplay etc.

??????

This is more about single employees, not publishing companies.

Sony doesn’t make those deals with every developer making the game, they go to the bosses or the publisher.

I think we got our wires crossed here.

At the end it's just business though. No hard feelings whatsoever.

Blue versus green!!! At this stage there's no point singling anyone out, as so many posts are on the periphery of reductionist one point exchanges. A perfect mixture of baiting, hot takes and just simple partsan support seasoned with the occassional insightful post. It's expected some light hearted banter and meme worthy hot takes will be generated - these don't really fall into 'console war' territory. There's an onus on users to sense that fine line and skirt it or give it a wide berth.

On topic, there's nothing against people being offered a tempting new opportunity, and there's nothing to prevent your existing company making an eye watering counter offer. Sometimes these counter offers are waved away because the new opportunity may include more autonomy, responsibility or influence over a particular brand - a step up where one currently doesn't exist. These are the realities of the job market. The posts vacated will create opportunities for those at a more junior level to also make the step up or arrive with a splash. There's nothing sadder than any industry being monopolised by middle aged employees waiting out their pensions or retirement and blocking fresh young talent or new grads with innovative ideas (though youth is no guarantee of innovation, just as age is no guarantee of wisdom). So, let's try get this topic back on the rails if we can ;)

What exactly are the rails?

That MS is building studios to poach talent?

I think I’m missing a step here.

The thread was made to console war, wars happened, and now we want to get back on track to the original war?

Wasn't my intention to console war, tbh. I knew my reaction to the situation was disproportionate and ridiculous and I was looking for a good roasting and a bit of fun. I believe we can use console wars type rhetoric to actually poke fun at each other and not take it too seriously. (In a kind of meta way)

If I have offended anyone or anything like that I apologize.

Wouldn’t mind if it was 2 or 3 from Sony studios in total.... but it seems that they are trying to poach everyone from Sony. It’s a scummy move.

It's business, if someone head hunts you, then you go to your employer and tell them you have been offered "this much" plus 10%, then say if you can match it you'll stay. This is how the real world works, if you think for one second internet fanboys feelings are considered for a nano second in these deals, then you got a lot to learn.

Bullshit.

Way too transparent for that.

MS solves everything with money.

Doesnt matter the studios or the devs they hire, they wont get rid of their bad business practices.

the only ones getting offended and taking things too seriously are fanboys, so don't worry. You did start off pretty troll'y though, but change course during the thread , making fun of your first posts :)

Yup, after actually writing it down, it helped me realize how ridiculous I was being. I guess I gained a bit of perspective.
Thanks for being understanding, we all have our faults.

Like?

I’d like to be a trillion dollar business someday, so help me out with your expertise.

MS moneyhats you and then they will do everything it takes to take that money back, which includes the fact that you are their slave for whatever bullshit they want from you.
Thats how moneyhatting works from companies that only cares about money.

Yeah....

Probably no.

It’s funny to see that people somehow believe this still.

I feel their business strategy and how they manage game development will still prevent them from producing an abundance of quality titles. Nintendo can't do online but they mostly treat their employees right and not rush games, and it seems to pay off for them.

Nintendo definitely has some secret sauce to how they treat their developers. Maybe they give free back rubs or massages....

Well, a friend of mine with a grade on VG development worked on a studio that works for MS, he heard things like what I said in that post and sure he knows a lot more than me.

Also, you just have to think a bit. If MS knew as well as Sony how to make their audience happy, PS4 wouldnt have crushed XBOX as it did, so it's pretty obvious MS is doing something wrong.
If you take a measure so desesperate as buying staff from Sony, is because you cant do shit on your own.

If they still can't make a million seller after taking great talent, then that is on Microsoft.

I predict one of their smaller studios making a super hit before TI make a million seller.

As an unashamed Sony Fanboy. . .

I have zero problem with this. People are free to work for whoever they want to work for. Companies are free to offer jobs to whoever they want.

I mean how do you keep a fanboy hate-erection thread on track? If anything it should be closed because it's dumb as fuck regardless of which company is hiring whom. That's how business/individual choice works. Nobody forced these people to leave their old jobs and take the new positions.

This is just sad.

I thought when you work for a gaming industry that you are locked into non-dis-closer agreements that prevent you from working for other gaming companies to stop trade secrets from getting out. When I visited one of the buildings that was making games they had high security to get into the building.

They poached three more people from Sony Santa Monica this weeks, all level designers from God of War. This is after already poaching Westergaard, a lead designer and others from Naughty Dog.

This is more underhanded behavior from the Xbox team, which in my opinion always choose the shortcuts over actually nurturing talent and building something themselves.

Previously Darryl Gallagher said he would recruit from universities and other disciplines in the area but I think their true motives have become clear.

Nobody "owns" the talent. The talent goes where it's well treated and appreciated and where its ambitions are met. Just like in another industry.
And they've hired veterans from many other firms than Sony. Quit whining.

No, Sony owns their lives. Do you think they even get paid? nope, they are slaves who got robbed by Microsoft to now be slaves for them, it's sad how evil MS can just steal these slaves right from under Sony's noses. We should all band together and protest, someone needs to do something! slaves should only work for my favorite console, they should be chained and not allowed to leave, lets vote to make free will illegal for the sake of PlayStation... er I mean... my preeeciooousss!

The secret nintendo and sony have is that they document game design and share that. MS leaves studios independent for the most part. And nintendo and sony do movements and team ups during peak game development. You can always see sony santa monica staff has a hand in like almost all sony first party. Sony Studio japan co-develops and ect in japan. In europe I think sony has liverpool and guerrilla.

MS can buy first party studios but they won't have synergy like sony and nintendo for a long time. It was actually the PS3 poor software support at launch that united sony first party like that.

In the 90's studios in the same office wouldn't even share tech. Conkers bad fur day is supposedly a different engine than benjo kazooie.

Let's say you wanted to change job and then some recruiter contacted you on Linkedin, wouldn't you negotiate an higher hourly rate? some more vacation days? You'd be - not very bright - to not take advantage of the opportunity to kill two birds with one stoke (you would also get bonus points at home with the GF if you came back home telling her: I got this new job, it seems very interesting AND we will be able to go on vacation in a nicer hotel next year).

Setting up in Santa Monica was definitely a shrewd move on MS’s part. Very expensive it seems but worth it to get access to that talent pool.

I have to laugh a little at the Sony fans who think this is immoral. It's a 100% voluntary business transaction that both parties freely engaged in for their mutual benefit. Who can fault the devs for wanting more pay, better benefits, or whatever other perks they are getting at MS? Who can fault MS for hiring the best possible talent? The same people who railed against Xbox for having "no games, lol" are now outraged that MS heard them loud and clear and are gobbling up dev studios and "poaching" talent from Sony. It's clear that MS will soon have plenty of games for Scarlett and Game Pass and they still aren't done buying devs.
