Posting supermodels and leading actresses as counterexamples is cute but represents maybe 1% of 1% of women who have ready access to personal dietitians, trainers and beauticians.

Especially when we all know Tom Cruise is nothing if not the typical, average male leading a typical, average life with no access to any of that stuff. Shit, he was married to Mimi Rodgers at one point. It's a miracle of male physiology he's still alive.

He looks great for a crazy cult person!

Women are generally valued for their looks, men more for their utility. If you're not way out of shape and half decent looking as a guy you're aces. Women, not so much. When they get in to their 30s they often age pretty fast. There are a lot of women that age really well though, I just think the standard is different.

The attractiveness of a man is not tied so closely to being youthful.

Also poor Cunth!
This; that livescience article is also relevant but for men 'youth' isn't as heavily weighted in attractiveness.

I also remember reading an article somewhere where a women was photoshopped to have distinguishing features of age amongst I believe nearly a dozen age ranges in non-chronological order; the one most guys said was the most attractive was actually closer to 14yrs old. In terms of dating age though, women were typically considered in their prime or most attractive from age 20 to early 20's, men in their late 40's to early 50's.

I would think there's a strong societal view of attractive that plays into this beyond physical looks though.

It's unfortunate that the OP cast the topic as a matter of Tom Cruise versus Kelly McGillis, because the broader question is much more interesting. I don't care about the celebrities on either side. Is it true in general?

til we have two women in neogaf
and 2, 19 year olds that like older men (sup)

First thing that pops up on google friend

I've often wondered if wearing makeup, concealer. Ages women's skin quicker by blocking pores and naturally being a dry material that absorbs moisture.

I'm too lazy to look it up but I think there's studies that have shown that makeup no matter the type of composition is really bad for a persons skin.

Just order a new face

Also probably life style, tons of girls here smoke because they don't want to gain weight. They starve themselves or only eat shit. Which isn't helping and drink tons of alcohol and sit in the sun whenever they can to get a brown tint.

Because right now the dating advantage is with women. If you want to be in the top 20% of men you have to be funny, smart, rich and good looking.

Anyone who's getting laid agrees with me, including women.

I work with a hot asian chick. I saw a pic of her mother and said damnnnn. I feel bad she will be so ugly later in life. I don't think I've ever seen a good looking older Asian lady. They age hard.

On the mens Side of thing I can speak form experience. I was in good shape when I was a teenager. Then I got into a car accident and basically let myself go for 10 years. I was chunky, had no style because I didn't care. But then I hit about 28 and it was like a total turn around. Lost the weight, found a good barber, finally landed in a good style, got the beard done nicely. I ran across an older pic and said Jesus, looked like a totally different person.

but now my wife is heavy and lacking style. Go figure lol.

i think it's a mix of experience as we age and obviously we age differently. Plus women's bodies take a hit with kids big time.

People aren't meant to live forever. We at best will look "ok" for 1/3 of our life. People grow old HARD once their body knows they aren't going to reproduce. Eventually everybody here will become old. (or die young) But yeah

FUCK YEAH MEN

Death tried to take me young, I said no. It took someone else Instead. :messenger_bicep:

Then I got fat. :messenger_face_screaming:

People still think I'm in my late 20s.... which is good since I'm actually in my mid-30s.

When I have my beard people guess my age fairly closely. If I'm shaved I have baby face and it's changes my look to about 10 years younger. Still prefer the beard.

I needed a chuckle, so thanks for this thread. If only the average man took as good care of himself as the average woman. Also, leave Kelly McGillis alone.

Bonus:
Women's brains appear to be three years younger than men's of the same age, according to a new study on brain metabolism. The findings could explain why women maintain their cognitive skills longer than men.

This is simple biology. Good looks are a necessary function of reproduction.

Men can reproduce at a late age, therefore there is a biological imperative that their body attempt to look good.

Women on the other hand quickly lose their ability to reproduce after the age of 40 (arguably sooner). Therefore their body has little imperative to maintain itself after that point.

If anything it makes me even more impressed by women who look good in their fifties, especially if they don't have surgery. The amount of care and hard work it takes to look good at that age is mind boggling.

its just biological evolution, women are the most useful for procreation during their prime years when they are the most attractive. afterwards attractiveness is somewhat of a detriment because this could mean other suitors would pillage the attractive ones so its better to become less attractive after child birth because this means the offspring would be looked after.

Haha, beat you by a solid 5 seconds.

Do these older men need to look good in order to attract a mate though? Surely the younger men would have them beaten every time? So the older men have to rely on things like wealth and power to attract a mate. Which means that they don't need to look good to attract a mate.

Some interesting reading about theories like yours: It ain't necessarily so.

Some science:

As long as we're having this discussion I also want to point out that good looks are just a part of the story. And may have more to do with signaling fitness then attracting mates.

See the above scale for females. Young males should be better looking no? So why does female interest peak at 50 and men at 18?

Well, pregnancy is very hard on the human body. Women are likely to die from it. Males seek 18 YO mates because they are most likely to survive at that age. Assisting in the survival of the children afterwords. And the possibility of additional offspring.

Women on the other hand want men most capable as providers. Male wealth and status tend to peak at age 50, making them the most capable of providing.

Connecting the dots isn't difficult. Human desire is aligned with the best method of procreation and likelihood of survival for offspring.

In recent years scientists have said that males aren't starting families on time due to financial difficulty. See above.

See my comment above. I do think looks play a part. Women aren't commonly marrying gross fat balding 50 year olds. They want the provider, but they also want a fit and healthy mate.

*Thanks for the link BTW, it's long, so I'll read it tomorrow at lunch.

18 years old is not the optimum age for childbearing though, so you might want to rethink your theory:

The infant of a mother under the age of 18 is 60% more likely to die in its first year of life.
Stillbirths and newborn deaths are 50% higher among infants born to adolescent mothers than among those born to mothers aged 20-29 years.
Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death of girls 15 – 19 worldwide.

You're saying it's safest at the age of 20-29

From your source:

"estimated that about 16 million adolescent girls give birth every year. Most of these births happen in low- and middle-income countries"

If most young births happen in low to middle income, of course the survival rates are lower. Women getting pregnant 20-29 are likely in first world countries with better overall health, financial stability and healthcare.

Do you have a study that shows two women of the same geographic and economic situation have these outcomes?

In which sense? According to the world health organization women live longer and healthier lives.

Media has popularized older men while biasing the perception against older women. Let me guess OP, men are also smarter, or so say 20 James Bond movies.

You make a good point, but the teenagers who got pregnant are still going to have more babies in their twenties.

This study from The Lancet says that there is a 28% increased risk of mortality in 15-19 year olds compared to 20-24 year olds. But it's hard to come by the precise comparison that you are looking for because 95% of all births by teenagers occur in developing countries.
