What's a good pick up and play game?

Yes this is a really broad question but most of the games I play are long ones. I need a game I can enjoy for 30-60 minutes at a time for after work.

Preferably on Switch or PC.

I will reward you in advance with a cookie.

Tetris 99 - the best battle royal game ever made
Contra - Any of them, all on Switch in one collection
Metal Slug - see above
Arcade Archives Donkey Kong - See if you can beat Billy Mitchell, Steve Wiebe etc. Most of the Arcade Archive games would be good pick up and play
Pacman Championship 2
Namco Museum

BallisticNG if you like classic WipEout

Bangai-O for Dreamcast if you just want to blow stuff up

Also Devil May Cry 3, but only if you're already good enough for it to not be frustrating.

My favorites are:
Audiosurf
Audiosurf 2 (I really just switch between the two, prefer the first though)
Plague Inc: Evolved
The Sims 3
The Sims 4 (I also switch between the two)
The Sims Medieval
Chess
Game Dev Tycoon
Mini Metro

Classicvania, Contra, almost every 8-16 bits action game.

I second Baba & You, great game, but only if you don't have a too mind consuming job.

Well I bought Donut County which should last me a few days.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll return to this thread when I'm done.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon Trap I think qualifies as pick up and play (it saves at your every move, but you always restart from the village) and I actually preferred it to the, equally fantastic, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. It doesn't even last that long.

Don't mind me if I'll take a cookie from your op, then.

This is not a game who will guarantee you quick sessions immediately, maybe, but for me Destiny 2 is perfect for short gaming bursts

Even in my most busy days, I usually turn ps4 on, launch the game, login, do some crucible fight, or gambit game, then logout
Like 30-60 minutes, a gaming snack

( username nails it, I know hahaah)

Totally forgot about this. Might use this to take a break from my shooty shoots.

The Swapper (Steam) - A puzzle game with a scifi setting. You can make limited number of clones of yourself and you move all of them at the same time. It's only about 5 hours long (depending on how quick you solve them) and you can take a break at any time.

i did this with Blasphemous, some long sessions but also 30/40 minutes sessions (even 15 minutes sometimes)

deriks

4-Time GIF/Meme God
Mario Kart 8 - can finish a circuit in less than 20 minutes
Doom - can finish a stage in less than half an hour
Bayonetta - can finish a stage in less than 20 minutes, and if you rush, less than 10

With online,
NES and SNES are great because you can save-state
Tetris is like five minutes per play
Rocket League is a blast in less than 10 minutes

For multiplayer Rocket League.
Generally finds games instantly and matches are 5 minutes long (a bit longer if its a tie and it goes into overtime) so it's great even if you just want to play for 10-15 minutes.

For single player I always enjoy The Binding of Isaac. I don't generally like Roguelikes but this one with all the different powerups and bosses is pretty damn fun.
Also, even though some might disagree...Dark Souls? (or the souls games in general). The constant saving means you can jump out at any point (except right during a boss fight or something like that) and not loose any progress. During my first playthrough I like longer sessions but on replays they are great for short bursts.

Tetris Effect for PC. Pop on the headphones, kick back, and enjoy the audiovisual experience. Was my favorite game from last year.

Tetris 99 for Switch if you prefer competition.

The original doom 1993 With mods is excellent pick up and play.
Levels can take between 1 minut to 20 minuts to complete there are tons of secret.

Also brutal doom or project brutality sparks New life to old shoes.
Especially project brutality.

Rocket League

The problem I have with RL is that I got too good and then forgot how to play. It kept matching me with users well above my skill level when I tried getting back into it.

Otherwise yup, it's a solid recommendation (and a great game).

To me, pick up and play means "do something meaningful / satisfying in 10m or less" while also being enjoyable for longer play sessions. Here are some pick up and play games on the platforms you listed that I still do actually pick up and play after years and years of playing.

- Minecraft
- Daioujou
- Breath of the Wild
- Spelunky
- Guilty Gear Xrd

I recently got Diablo 3 on Switch and I think that qualifies. It is as simple as Gauntlet and can be played that way indefinitely, or you can push the loot/roguelike mechanics to the limits and create really crazy builds at higher difficulties. In light of all the additions and enhancements, I think I like it better than D2 and D1 now. A perfect action roguelike / Gauntlet clone.

Yeah, Spelunky is pretty much a perfect example.

Also BotW is much underrated for offering this. It's quite interesting how the idea of 'good for short and long bursts' drove the overall design of the game.

I'll look into Diablo 3 as I suspect it's absolutely what I'm looking for. I wonder if games like Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur's Gate would work the same way...

I've been playing Spelunky since the old PC version (I liked those level tunes better  ). Much love. I've only beaten it two or three times, so it's not like I'm even that great at it.

I bounced off most open-world games this gen. I'm sick of them. BotW keeps pulling me in. They designed it really well.

Nah, Divinity and BG are slow-paced in comparison. They're both good franchises, but you'll often spend 15m talking to all the NPCs in town, or 5m carefully reading through an interesting lore book. They are dense classic-style WRPGs where the experience is meant to be digested 1-2 hours at a time. Diablo 3 is about churning through bloody content as you bathe in loot. It has as much in common with those RPGs as DOOM (2016) has in common with a Far Cry game.

Have you played Disgaea?
