Is there a price gap of the launch consoles that would cause you to switch platform?

Obviously we can only work with the details we have, but I'm guessing most people have a favoured direction/platform they're going to buy. Is there a price difference that would cause you to switch platform on the new launch models? For example, if you are currently Sony, if the new Xbox comes in £50 cheaper, is that enough to make you swap platform? What about £100? For example

PS5: £429.99
Xbox Next: £349.99

Would you get a launch xbox? I'm just interested to see how much of a factor price is to different people. Let's avoid the usual console war shite if possible.

Depends on why the console cost more than the other.

For the purposes of discussion we will assume hardware specs are comparable and the libraries are as we know them now.

I would post a poll, but my perms seem to have been screwed up, I have messaged a mod

No. It's a one time purchase, so 50-100$ is not a significant difference when you compare things like services, 1st party offerings, potential VR or other accessories, community/what consoles your friends have (talking in general).

Xbox is already cheaper than Playstation. And had been the case for literally years. For as long as the price is within acceptable range, the only thing that would matter is the games.

Basically, the price difference you are suggesting already exists, right now. In Australia the 1TB Xbox1s is $329 while the 1TB PS4 is $429. This is in Australian dollars. But $100 AUD difference is already greater than your scenario.
Basically, assuming the game offerings are identical, your suggested price difference would leave Scarlet dead in the water.

Edit: According to this site:
The current 1TB XB1s price in the UK is £ 190
The current 1TB PS4slim in UK is £ 260

70 pounds in price difference, your example is only 80 pounds different. I don't see how you would make a dent over a 10 pounds discount.

If there’s no significant difference that warrants the price increase then I’d probably get the cheaper one. So yeah a price difference could get me to jump, but I’d get both eventually anyhow.

But as I said, the price difference already exists NOW. Why not jump now if that is what you care about? Unless of course, we both know the two consoles are never going to be identical.

I have both mid-gen variants of Sony and Microsoft’s console, I can’t do anymore jumping unless I get a Switch too.

In that case, this isn't really any kind of decision you need to make. If you already buy both then it made no difference to you which you purchase first.

Been thinking about it lately and I don't think I'll be buying a new console. Might dip into VR eventually but I'm pretty happy with my Switch and Vita/PS2 for retro games.

So no basically. Price wouldn't have been a factor anyway.

If the ps5 is more expensive and trying to force vr on us then I think many will pick up an Xbox...particularly if it launches with a halo game.

I think both consoles will be virtually identical in specifications with some minute differences that don't really amount to anything. What I don't think will be the same though are prices, I'm speculating we're going to see another 360/PS3 situation on our hands.

I'm expecting Scarlett to be $399.99 and the PlayStation 5 to be $499.99. At the beginning of this gen Microsoft went high and Sony went low after the fact. For this coming generation I can see Microsoft put themselves in a hole to hit their price, a hole Sony won't be able to follow that they're likely aware of.

The reason the PS4 was $399.99 is because it cost them about $383 per unit to produce, so they were making money. I severely doubt that is the case for the PS5 and $399.99 will be totally unfeasible without taking a loss; something I see Sony as less willing to do.

No.
Since the are more or less the same specs overall I doubt they’ll be priced differently, I’m guessing the both will retail for the same price.

It's an amount you pay one time for a product which will stick with you for 5 years. What matters is the exclusives and the price deals you get with the console. If the PS5 costs 300 dollars more than the next x-box, but the deals are better and the exclusives are more than the X-Box's, I'll buy a PS5.

It's not worth it to deprive yourself of good games just to save 50-100 dollars on a one-time purchase. It's stupid to think otherwise.

Definitely not. I actually want more expensive consoles. But more important than price or power is the game library.

But, we aren't the people to ask. It's the more casual audience that might choose a console on price without understanding the differences as well.

Nah.

If you had 6ft stick and someone tried to sell you a 3ft stick. Why would you buy it when you already have a stick that is much better!?

For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about. I have a PC that I will be able to play Halo/Forza or any other exclusive title and not only that but I will be able to get better visuals/performance than with an Xbox. That's why I will be buying a PS5. Microsoft have nothing to offer me when it comes to Xbox. Even if I couldn't play their exclusive games on PC it would still be a tough sell because the only games I care about are Halo/Forza. For Halo it's only really for the sake of nostalgia. Of those days playing Halo 3. They will need to seriously impress with Halo Infinite. As for Forza...well there are plenty of good driving games I can play.

Probably not, MS would have to blow me out of the water with Halo (assuming the consoles are similar). I loved the 360; probably in my top 3 consoles of all time, but I can't see Xbox regaining that clout again.

I remember MS trying a subscription model to pay for their console, if they could do something like £30 a month for 2 years or so with gamepass/XBL Gold, then maybe.

Either way, we need to learn more about these consoles.

It'd have to be a gap that was larger than my digital library for the competing platform, so the gap would probably have to be a few grand.

I would never choose a different console just to save 50-100$. What concern me more this gen is the controller. If Sony is really bringing haptic feedback on analog sticks and Microsoft doesn't build something similar if not better, I'm going to be in a bad place because I like Microsoft IPs more. I'm just waiting for news, I hope X019 will bring some details about Scarlett. :messenger_confused:

About buying both of them it's a waste of money IMHO because it's practically impossible to truly follow the games that every console has to offer.

I'll buy a PS5 for exclusives, I know Bloodborne 2 is going to happen at some point and I ain't gonna miss that.
With gamepass and all the Microsoft stuff already on PC, I see very little reason to purchase a Nextbox at any price point. I'd rather spend the money on PC upgrades.

If it was more like last gen, i might have been a bit divided in wich to buy, but microsoft has been such a disappointment to me this gen, from release till now, so, next gen i will most likely go with playstation, just like i did this gen. I will always chose the platform with the games that interest me the most, even if it's more expensive

There's been many exceptions (Kingdom Hearts 1 particularly), but at the end of the day my truest fondness is in Nintendo games.
Sony and Microsoft haven't delivered a tentpole exclusive for me for YEARS.

I don't think I have to worry about Nintendo charging more for their next console than their competitors!

It's a matter of everything

Here in Brazil is easier to find PS4 stuff and close second Xbox One stuff, but a far away, and very far third place stands for Switch
Xbox One games gets cheaper easier than PS4, but the PS4 has a little bigger catalog most of the time in the stores
Switch is the same price as a PS4 and a Xbox One, but the games are way expensive

I guess I'm a sony fanboy
If backwards compatibility wasn't a thing i might have thought of switching. But I've been playing their exclusives since Ps1 and even with the PS3 that was 100$ pricier than Xbox I still got the ps3 (that was compatible with ps2 games at launch...) If that didn't do it I guess nothing will.

Why would it matter? Unless you play only fifa etc = games + platform is the thing.

Even if xbox would be 2x more powerful with half the price, I would get ps5.

Xbox exclusives arent interesting at all and their controller is so bad with stupid stick placement that no deal. And their OS sucks

Also friends have ps4 so to play coop with them = ps5 is the choice.

Xbox aint a serious thing outside of US anyway.

Tldr: No, Price isnt the reason to choose sony. It is the platform, games and controller

Well, Switch is much more expensive than ps4/one(300-350€ vs 200-250€), so I think you are wrong. Because they probably wont release switch2 at the same time, next gen have time to drop prices.

Also nintendo "sales" are a joke, so games are more expensive too

My personal opinion is that nintendo exclusives are over hyped garbage, anything with mario/zelda = gets much higher rating than it deserves, so it isnt that straight forward to compare them.

I have switch too but most exclusives are too simple, shallow and boring. Same games since NES and we cant even talk about having a good story/plot on most of their games. Zelda botw is ok, but story is like written in 30minutes and world is kind of empty, compared to games like FF or witcher. Rest of the games = no story at all

But good that sony& Nintendo offer different types, good deep story driven games and overly simplified grap& play games

people here on gaming forums already have preferences set.

Now majority of consumers care about $. casual gamers, moms and dads will see similar products that play OCD, fortnite etc and go with the cheaper price tag.

Nah, I don’t see myself buying an xbox until they get their first party support straight. If the PS5 is too expensive, I’ll get wait until it gets cheaper.

No.
With MS now bringing all of their exclusives to PC my 2 options for early next gen are either a Ps5 or PC.

Full or near full backwards compatibility might be the only thing that makes me get the next XBox, since I can play the new games on PC.

Aside from that, it depends on the games. If Xbox backtracked on releasing games on Windows then they might come up with some decent exclusives that makes me get one.

Who knows what features may pop up though. I only bought an xbox one s this time because it can play 4k hdr bluray.

Edit: Sorry, I didn't answer the question. No there would not likely be a big enough difference to change my mind, but who knows how cocky they can get? I won't buy at launch anyways, but if PS5 came out at 600, yea I'd definitely hold off.

Nope. Sony has the exclusives.

But OK, let's speculate. If Sony made a severely under-powered console compared to Microsoft, that was much more expensive and digital only, always-online and lacked some really cool features that Xbox had, then I would buy the Xbox instead.

Seems about 0% likely though.

I could see myself buying both consoles at launch though, if only Microsoft had some worthwhile exclusives or some unique feature.
