PS5 Is 'Not Just About the Future, But Also About the Past', Insider Claims

Too bad. Thats focus that could have gone to making future games better.

Theres a small small vocal minority who really cares about this.
Or perhaps those extra profits from PS Now subscriptions could go towards funding more & better PS5 exclusives... ;)

Kinda makes me think if it's a good time to stock on ps3 exclusives that have not made it to pc or ps4...

Will I be able to play PS2, Ps3 and PS4 games directly from the disc and offline? Thank you.

Nobody knows in regards to PS2 and PS3.

PS4 you don’t play off of discs (it’s only a disc check), thus is would work as it does now on the PS4, insert, install, play.

PR speak? The wording is so vague, that it could mean anything really. They are just now verifying game compatibility for the PS4 games, I don’t have high hopes for some kind of compatibility for PS1-PS2 games, can only hope for a update in the future once the PS5 is released, and hopefully they add those games digitally too.

There is absolutely zero excuse why the PS4 couldn't at least run PS1 and PS2 games except for the fact that Sony wants to sell the emulated versions on the PS Store.
You’re right in that regard, except if I recall that the PS4 can’t play the PS1 disc format, but that should easily be fixable if that’s the case I imagine?

If Sony really wants us to buy their digital games from PS1-PS2, then they really should give us the same available games that are also on the PS3 market place. It’s appearance and representation on the PS4 is very underwhelming and I still haven’t figured out why they haven’t made them available on the PS4.

With is no surprise because as much people keeping console war about BC, they forget that the Xbox One use software emulation for Original Xbox and Xbox 360.
If you go to the Playstation 3 Store side, a bunch of PS1 games are there. Maybe Sony want to add that PS3 library to PS5.

Sure but why haven’t they made them available digitally on the PS4?

Backwards compatibility with all past Sony consoles. Excluding Vita, because who cares.

I would LOVE backwards compatibility for PS2 and PS1 (have close to 700 older gen games in my collection), but I seriously doubt it when Sony seems happy to charge for digital downloads of said gen games (or a monthly sub to their PSnow service) and people are willing to pay for it.

For the rest of us it’s called “buying your product”. Seriously, why have a digital future when you don’t even support your product with the next iteration?

I think they understand this. The landscape from PC and Mobile has finally shaped the console arena as well with digital libraries in said ecosystems. Much more important in 2020 than it was in 2013.

Why not both though? Not many people have the old physical discs. Plus most people today I believe go for digital, so it wouldn't affect Sony much financially.

Both would be ideal. I'd like to be able to play the games I already have from disc without being forced to buy them again (like I am now on the PS4). But it'd be great to have the option to buy a digital copy if I need it. More options is better!

I thought Sony gamers didn't care about BC? When MS tries to cram in old gen games, it's a waste of time. Move forward, not backwards.

Oh wait.

huh? I dont get it, none of them other options has any real value for playing games.

not that I'm saying backwards compatibily is bad or anything, but that question only have that answer.

Would sony be allowed to just give out BC for all 4 generations? Wouldn't the same laws that stop microsoft from making everything BC, stop sony?

Also current gen systems cant read CD's. Would sony spend the money to add that back into ps5 just for BC?

Is the salt/criticism about BC because some people feel we're foregoing X feature, improvement, or perhaps getting a higher cost because of it? It seems pretty pro-consumer to me to not force people to re-buy games they already own, but would like to play on their new console. This is in addition to being able to sell your PS4 and still be able to play your library and not have to stash yet another piece of hardware somewhere. IIRC before the PS4 launch, Sony was getting a lot of criticism for not having BC.

What does Sony have to benefit from this? Seems like a good deal to me. I typically adapt late and purchase games once they've had a good price drop or two, so I'd gladly pay a little more to upgrade to a PS5 but not invalidate my PS4 library. I know some people don't want this, and that's valid too.

PS1,PS2 and PSP should work without problem, Simply by using the pure power. I saw second gen ryzens tested on the PS3 emulator,I would not be suprised if there will be a curated list of supported games, like on xbox one

If Sony offered physical BC with older consoles, wouldn't that make licensing concerns less complicated? I mean, to make a game available digitally, they have to get the license to allow it on the digital storefront. But if it's physical support, then it is just playing games that people own and are already out there, and they don't have to seek licensing for those thousands of games to let them work on the system. Am I right or wrong on that?

They will have a small number of PS1,2,3 games on the digital store. That will be it. I'm calling it.

There won't be any physical BC beyond PS4.
I don't think that will be enaugh to call it BC, there is that leak that said don't sell or throw your old Playstation Disc's.

It could mean they will invest in platformers like ps1 era. Or try to make rpgs like square used to.

It could mean anything.

I would be shocked if you could just slap in any disc and have it work (PS1, PS2, PS3)

It would probably be done like the 360 BC. Selected titles, due to many, many licence expiries.

Damn seems Microsoft might be the only ones REALLY letting you have access to most of the Xbox library, I would’ve loved being able to at least put my old ps1-2 disc inside my ps5.

They have a good amount of original PlayStation games digital on the store already. They can always go the Microsoft method and buy them and play on the PS5, or Insert a disk you own, and it downloads it.

I hope they don't go the MS method. Honestly, if the PS5 allows for offline profiles and doesn't require internet just like PS4 I'll probably purchase day 1. If they also have the ability to play a PS1, and 2 (3 is a hope to far methinks) without touching internet I'll probably buy two (one for each TV).

Color me skeptical.

Software solutions seem to be a glaring weakness for Sony. Whether its gamertag, backwards compat, cloud, etc. I'm not sure they can have BC that is as competent as Microsoft's.

PS1 BC is important, that's why PS2 has it built in! Oh wait, it's not that important, future models can't do it!

PS2 BC is important, that's why PS3 has it built in! Oh wait, it's not that important, future models can't do it!

PS3 BC is important, that's why PS4 does its best with PS Now streaming! Oh wait, that Sony Exec said during a Gran Turismo party, what gamers wants to play old Gran Turismo games? GT Sport or bust losers!

As per Sony and Cerny, PS4 BC is coming. It's important gamers! Oh wait.................................

I don't think theres any laws against it? I mean all of Sonys consoles except the PS4 have had this. Microsoft just choose to do BC like that. I mean obviously they can't sell BC games digitally without permission, but there's nothing stopping them from using an emulator that plays all the physical games.

How do PC digital storefronts tackle the licensing issue?

Pretty sure we heard we’d be able to play PS1 and PS2 games with PS NOW when playstation 4 was announced.
Would be surprised if we could play anything before PS4.... and would love it :)

I'm not sure I give a rats arse about BC beyond the games I this gen. (Lost my PS4 in a break-up and had to settle for an xbox :messenger_downcast_sweat:)

PS1 and PS2 games are fucking fugly and most (the 3D ones) did not hold up well at all. Besides, I've played all that shit already, literally decades ago.

Focus on making this gen and next gen more interesting. Outside of, maybe 10 games, the rest of the gen was a complete waste of time.

Mr. Community
What people are thinking when they read this: BC up to PS1 baby!

The reality of what he meant: we're gonna use PS1 typefaces and design cues from the PS2 era to link our next product to the brand's storied past.
