So brave, shittalking your employer in a very public space like Schreier is.
If you don’t like the job and what it entails, fucking quit. Leave. Nobody is entitled to a job, especially one that involves writing about video games (sometimes). These “gaming journalism” asshats love throwing around the “entitlement” tag when consumers complain about their industry bedfellows, but it turns out that— SURPRISE!— they’re just as guilty of being entitled, just in a different scenario. Same goes for the Deadspin crew that got their walking papers today for failing to follow directives.
Employers don’t take kindly to getting shat upon by the people they pay to perform a service, especially when they’re easily replaceable. Most states in the USA have “at will” employment; employees can be terminated at any time for any reason. Sure, you can sue for wrongful termination, but lawyers don’t work for free and employers are more often than not going to have legal teams ready to drag things out or even fight back directly... so it’s a matter of survival at that point.
I don’t give a speck of shit how many people would consider me a “bootlicker” for following the directions of my employers without question or resistance. I like having a job that supplies me with the money I need to pay my bills and allows me to afford the things I want. If/when I get to the point where I no longer am happy or comfortable with following the rules and directives set before me, I am fine with discreetly looking for a new job instead of publicly shitting into the mouths of the people who sign my paychecks. I may be a bootlicker, but I am a bootlicker with a roof over my head, food in my mouth, a decent vehicle for transportation, and a budget for entertainment like video games.
