games are just not very fun anymore

and no, this isn't on me. I still enjoy games I played when games were fun. every game now wants you to work to get anything out of it. everything has slow super realistic cinematic motion, the controls for almost every big game feel sluggish and awful, Fallen Order looks like uncharted its basically "how can we make this game look like a movie" everything is so grounded gameplay wise, like the range of things you can do in most games is highly limited, all you can do pretty much is run from point A to point B in some pattern and then usually the main gameplay mechanic of most games now is cover shooting. or walking

Like I remember when you know games were designed to be fun. as games. the story was there to tie it all up, but now it seems like the only reason you'd play a game is to go from point A to point B to get some story information like a cutscene or whatever else. its like what. and yeah I know indie games aren't like that, but am speaking about big budget games. I can't find any indie games that are big budget games from a decade or so ago. they are either 2D or very simplistic 3D.

literally more work goes into every part of the game nowdays except the gameplay? how many people do you think they hired to come up with death stranding gameplay?. what does it come down to. some shooting and walking around?. like what in the shit. Imagine if every big hollywood movie was like gravity? thats basically most of the game industry to me. most games are Gravity, the game.

My first thought. This is a you thing. Your first thought. This isn’t a me thing.

I find games just fine. Now my time and attention anymore. That’s a problem.

There are plenty of games that aren't like that on every platform but it really sounds like you should get a switch. What you are after is exactly what Nintendo make - games that are purely built for fun, not for realism or a cinematic experience.

I played nintendo games before. they aren't as snappy as I like my games to be and not into most of them. mostly into the 3rd party games

Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it. Same with games. If you're not having fun with the games you've been playing, play different games. Or don't. But to claim that an entire entertainment medium is no longer "fun," is kind of silly.

Yeah games that try way too hard to movies are annoying.

If a game’s actual gameplay is just an afterthought/formality between cutscenes, then it’s a shit game. This includes most AAA Sony exclusives, unfortunately.

I wanna play video games.

If you wanna make a movie then just make a movie.

As the “video games are art” movement has gained traction in developer and fan circles, it’s been determined that video games no longer have to be fun. They’re vehicles for emotional or sociopolitical messages. Having fun is showing a lack of maturity, which embarrasses these people. Video games are a serious art form, and these groups want more than anything to have their art form taken seriously by the world at large.

Modern video games taking themselves too seriously and getting off on the smell of their own farts is one of the things pushing me away from the form of entertainment and escapism that I had been a fan of since the mid-1970s. If I wanted stuffy, pretentious, overly-emotional, dripping with narrative, morals beaten over my head entertainment, I’d go to artsy movies or frequent art museums... but that’s not my thing. I just want to have fun and shut my brain off for a few hours.

At least older games, ones that prioritized fun above all, still exist and are a welcome respite from the downers the market is filled with today.

how could modern gaming possibly be fun if Prey 2 is still cancelled
Sometimes freedom has been limited in the name of realism, but if you haven't tried it already, maybe you'll like Dying Light. I've never felt so free in navigating my environment! That's some smooth as fuck movement. Also Dying Light is basically Prey 2 but zombies, which is a splendid idea. Snappy too.

Maybe you should fish for some non-cinematic game recommendations. Lay out what it is you dislike, GAF will probably get you a pretty long list.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
I definitely think the obsession with making games look or feel like movies is a misstep when it happens, but I don't feel like it's happening in all or even most games.

I would even agree a bit that there are more bad games now than ever before. But I also feel like the best games coming out now are the best games that have ever come out, and even the worst games that I've played recently all tend to function as games. I can't think of anything I played recently that was a fundamentally broken, unplayable mess. That hasn't always been the case. Video games as a medium are still young, and game development as an industry is just now leaving its infancy. There are still growing pains to go through (the corporate greed that has lead to things like lootbox gambling schemes is a prime example.)

Sometimes I can't enjoy games, and in those times I take a break. Usually a few days, sometimes weeks, there have even been a couple of stretches lasting a few months. Nothing has a sheen forever, sometimes you have to let it renew its self.

Books were never fun.

Every other entertainment medium is objectively superior.

Yes I will die on this hill.

I’m with you on that hill. I can’t stand books. My seventh-grade English teacher had a lot to do with starting that hatred, and it’s remained ever since.

I find staring at words alone, without the ability to interact with them in some way, to be incredibly boring. Movies give my eyes something to look at in a more active manner, and video games are completely interactive.

OP, I have been there at points for different reasons. Take a break. AAA studios release less these days cause many bank on longer lasting GaaS and over inflated budgets. It sucks but something should pop up that interest you.

Its literally a you thing. There are hundreds of games that aren't as you describe. Ni No Kuni 2, Devil May Cry 5, NieR: Automata, Luigi's Mansion 3, Sea of Thieves, Witcher 3, River City Girls, Medievil, Concrete Genie, Disgaea, Atelier Ryza - and that is just a glance at the various games on my shelves.

Stop trolling already.

It’s a hate sony games thread. He stealthily added uncharted in it.

He does this every so often. Honestly it just becomes tiring. At least with other console warriors they put a bit more effort into it. This one though is just routinely sad.

Just imagine how much better games could be (gameplay or more content or more money spent towards polish and Q&A) if devs chopped out the money spent on CGI, cut scenes, professional actors gabbing at each other for hours.

Yeah, no... whining about generalisations. It's completely on you if you can't escape the whirlwind of GaaS and cinematic experiences. There's more choice and quality out there now than ever.

Watch out guys... only Nintendo makes fun games...

for me to poop on

one good Zelda game every 25 years and it’s like we should ignore all the typical cookie cutter rehashes they make. Give me a break

There are no such thing as boring games, only boring people

The first game I ever played:

Movies right now are shit. Games aren’t far off.

You can make an accurate generalization about trends in a medium. There’ll always be exceptions, but it makes sense for a medium to be represented by the bulk of its product in that timeframe.

Aside from Death Stranding, which I like, I feel much the same as OP. Game design and craftsmanship have fell off a cliff this generation.

I've been gaming since '77 and I think games are more fun than ever.

🕺

I feel ya been gaming since Intellivision in the 80's. From there to games in the past few years like Bloodborne, Witcher 3, RDR2, Death Stranding + VR technology + handheld technology. It has become a literal dream world for the hardcore gamer and it's only getting better.

How can you say it isn't you when it's your opinion? Its not fact

You didn't even hit on the biggest issue with what he said, this little nugget:

Like I remember when you know games were designed to be fun

Who here has played ARMA? Have you ever crawled for over 1KM with no saves, a shitty rifle and spent a good 30 minutes getting to the correct spot only to fail and have to start again? Most wouldn't consider that fun - but I would.

As if what is 'fun' is something that applies to everyone.

Plus, with the proliferation of indie games + more big budget titles coming out than ever, there's so much to choose from that I find it hard to believe that anyone couldn't find something they'd be happy with.

This is a non-issue anyway. If someone doesn't like games, stop playing them, why are they telling us?

OP maybe you should play some sidescrolling nintendo games like it's 1990. I hear only nintendo makes fun games these days.

It's you. I went through the same thing.

Games design hasn't significantly changed in decades, aside from the creation of the battle royale genre and maybe soulsborne-type game play. What makes games fun hasn't really changed, though.

You still like your old games because you have an emotional connection to them. It's hard to connect to new games in the same way because your interest in new games is waning.

Pretty much. There's something for everyone, whether the game is new or old.

Dark Souls and Bloodborne will always be my go-to gaming experience. Pretty much the most fun I've had with videogames in recent years have been with Souls titles. There's enough RPG elements to get your character/weapon building fill, but there is so much action and exploring and lore/mystery to uncover. Even 4-5 years later, I'm still learning so much about the Lovecraftian inspired mythos of Bloodborne, and it's great. That doesn't mean games have to be extremely deep or difficult to be considered intense or fun. But it's a good way to make a game repayable, and in turn, a valuable and enjoyable experience.
