Xbox Elite 2 controller is having widespread issues

I've tried working on my own controllers...I don't have all the tools needed for full featured maintenance though. Mainly I lack a soldering kit. I did take the Xbox One Project Scorpio edition controller apart to try and fix the issue. I ended up making it worse...oh well.

If you ever do get old and senile like me, and become interested in old people hobbies (tinkering with absolutely fucking everything you own) a half-decent soldering kit is only $20 on Amazon.

I think the biggest issue is the goddamned price.

It's priced accordingly for the market it sits in. I'd never argue it's a good bargain, or try to tell anyone they should find it a good value as value is in the eye of the beholder, but it shares only a few parts with the regular controller, and it does offer more features than most "Pro" style controllers at the price point. Considering to cost of building molds and re-engineering the entire controller for a much more limited market, the price isn't too outrageous. Limited run products always come at a premium. It's not always as simple as breaking down the individual costs of the materials.

I do think the paddles should be worked into the standard controller for Scarlett though. Ditch the case/charger swap-able sticks and other small upgrades but get the paddles (or even just some decent rear face buttons) included in the base controller. Once you get used to them they are hard to live without.

The complaints started with the sticky buttons which is a temporary problem for the majority as I understand it. From my own experience, the "A" button on my Ev2 was sticky for the first couple of days, probably some kind of overshoot material or sticky residue somewhere around the button, but it's not at all an issue now after having played a few hours of games. I'm primarily a PC gamer and would take the controller back to the store in a heartbeat, I have no stock in MS, but until I see statistics I suspect this is a storm in a teacup with piranhas in it. The controller really feels like a premium product, and the optional stick tension adjustment alone has been a game-changer for me at least. I'm sorry for those that have real issues though.

Defects are expected it's just about how many are defected and how many were sold. When you use forums especially tech support ones; you are mostly going to find the people that have problems posting about their problems. People are more likely to post that they have a problem than they are that they didn't have a problem. I don't know the common defect rate for controllers or physical input devices are or if controllers are supposed to have smaller rates in general but look at motherboards for example, the best return rate under warranty (RMA) is about 1.89%; meaning out of a possible million sold approximately 18,900 have been returned through warranty. How big of a problem it really is; we'll wait and see. The author of the article referenced even says it's unclear how big of a problem it actually is.

Also, getting a defected controller day 1 isn't a huge issue unless you bought it from a small retailer who won't let you replace it for free. But most major retails will replace it at no extra charge.

I got an elite 1 and the qc issues sucked. Swapped out twice they all had something goofy going on. Ended up using a standard controller.

It has a gyroscope so it beats all of those by default in my opinion.
Most modern games dont generally support gyro so thats hardly a factor imo (also the switch pro controller does have gyro)

what i care about is comfort and battery, whilst comfort is debatable between symmetrical and asymmetrical, the battery is factually shit. And the analog quality is subpar.

I bought the first Elite controller when it first launched and have never had a problem with it. Don't know if I want to roll the dice and purchase one of the new ones. Heck, my OG still works great so I don't need one. Probably just jinxed myself though.

I never had an xbox of any generation fail on me. Playstation however? Please don't get me started...... The only
sony console that didn't have problems in my case, as the original Playstation.......

I've gone through 5 Xbox One consoles and still have my launch PS4. My Xbox One X started going wonky after 6 months too. Don't even ask me how many 360's I went through. Wish I had your luck.

I bought one on release day, and have been really putting it through its paces between Rocket League and CoD MW. No problems as yet, love the quality, and the hair-trigger locks for semi-autos are pure 🤗.

I bought the two-year warranty, so the total cost was almost the cost of a fucking console but, as of now, no regerts. 👍

My god, you're a genius. Brb gonna try it.

Just wanted to add in my two-cents. I love my V2 Elite. Its awesome, comfortable, looks great and has a long battery charge. I still have my V1 which I also love and keep. I agree it sucks for those with a defective controller but since its so soon after release getting a replacement should be feasible. Oh yeah and the response time between using the new V2 versus my oldies is slight but noticeable, when bringing up the dash or turning it on.

This is a huge bummer. Why have controllers gotten so crappy this generation?

I'd happily sink more money into a controller if I knew it would last me. I have several arcade sticks around my house as a testament to that.

But I'm not going to waste money and frustration on an overpriced controller that can't function for more than a few years.

I have like 8 xbox one controllers, and only had issues with one.
Statistically speaking, they are solid.

I've had issues both with Nintendo and with Sony controllers this gen. Maybe I need to get an X1 controller with one of those converter USB things. :pie_thinking:

Let me know what you think. The FAL with those triggers is straight murder.

I played a couple of quick matches and it was a pretty big difference haha! Its kind of crazy that it works so well. Also managed to rank up the gun a few times too lol.

I have a switch and although its working fine, the whole console feels incredible cheap.
DS4 as previous sony joysticks are too unreliable as well. A friend of mine that has ps4 -and by no means its a hardcode gamer, barely uses it- had many issues with it, specially with the rubber of the sticks cracking.
Anyways, i have both a MBP and a surgace book 2 and the quality of those devices compared to gaming gadgets is unbelievable.
Not that im asking for magnesium/alum, but at least premium plastic.

I'd pay good money for a brushed aluminum controller that can be opened and repaired. The problem with the dualshock 4 and Joycon controllers is they're so crammed with components that it's a fool's errand to fix them yourself (IMO).

I was tempted to pick up the elite 2 but held off until due QC issues with gen 1 controllers, after burning through 2 gen 1 elites with drifting issues.

I figured that I was pushing down to hard on the sticks and was crushing the modules underneath, so I swapped out the concave sticks with the convex instead and it has served me well thus far, the rubber grips have swollen and have peeled a little but it still works 😎

i bougth it day 1 and returned it day 2
connecting between several devices is a bitch

didnt work with ipad pro 11inch xbox one s controller does work
didnt work with mayflash adapter xbox one s controller does work
no removable battery.

shame controller felt premium as fuck
The first two problems wouldn’t be the controllers fault but firmware from said hardware not supporting the controller no?,

Third problem is you couldn’t read it came with a charging pad for the controller. Don’t see how any of the problems you have experienced are the controllers fault.

I'd love to hear the details on this.

i can only assume he has stumps for hands and is therefore unable to grip a controller

wasn't there a lawsuit over how shitty the rubber on the dualshock 4s are?

the most recent ds4 i've bought has been fine. but the first couple of years that they were out had terrible build quality

Microsofts statement on the situation;

'At Microsoft, we put all of our products through rigorous quality assurance testing. However, like any hardware, there is the possibility that a small percentage of devices may experience issues. We are aware that a small number of users may be experiencing issues with the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and are actively investigating with our engineering teams. We encourage any customers who experience issues with their hardware to contact Xbox Support. '

Just like the first gen. My Elite V1 was blown apart crap after just 6 months, and it wasn't like I was hurling it against walls or anything.

$180. Add in tax and you're practically at $200 (in Ontario you'd be at $200). In fact, it's $230 in Canada, so add in tax and you're at around $260.

No thanks.

I'll stick with the stock controller that comes with the system.

I still kinda want one.

I love my OG Elite, but I did have to go thru 2 of them, and I did have to service my current one a bit. They are superb controllers, but they are sadly not as well made as they could or should be. Still my overall favorite though.
