My Boss Just Accused Me of Lying. Should I quit immediately (already put in my two weeks)

I work at a retail store and I recently got an opportunity to move onto something much better. But I feel like I did the right thing. The other job wanted me to start immediately but I said I'd rather give my current job a proper two week notice. Which I did do.

Yesterday I was off and got some sort of stomach flu. Vomiting and awesome stuff coming out the other end.

I called today and said I am sick and I won't be in today.

And her response was as follows:

"Really? (5 second pause) When's your last day?

"Friday"

"And you're actually sick?"

*I wouldn't make that up."

"Ok whatever."

(She hung up)

Mostly just venting, but this response super pissed me off. If I wanted to not show up, I'd simply not show up. I have no reason to lie about this and to accuse me off lying is super unprofessional.

My last day is supposed to be Friday but after this interaction I'm basically like "fuck em."

Help me gaf. Should I not return or talk me off the ledge.

It's retail, they get pissed whenever someone misses a shift, whether the excuse is legit or not. In the restaurant bizz call-outs are so frequent that we have "on-call" shifts, where you're expected to show up if others don't.

If you've already got the other job locked down and you don't need the money, fuck it, take the rest of the week off.

Uh loads of people call in sick when they aren't.

She didn't really accuse you of anything tho. She just sounds annoyed by the fact she has to change stuff around. Kinda unprofessional but who cares. Just ignore it.

But if I have a other job, I've given notice, why would I even bother to call them if I wasn't sick.

Maybe I'm reading into it but to blantantly Say and you're really sick sounds/feels like an accusation to me. You're only asking if that if someone thinks they are being lied to.

Frankly I would be pissed as well.

I would immediately start the new job and I'd also tell (new employer) them why you decided to take the job early.

Whether or not people fake call-in sick, it is no one's business to ask about it, unless it's several days.

Stay 100% professional. Never burn a bridge you don’t have to.
I generally agree, but after 25 years in my career over several jobs. There are exceptions.

Plenty of people have had a bad employment experience on their record, and it should not be something for a manager or director to automatically frown upon. To expect someone to have a spotless lifetime career record is somewhat not realistic.

In this case, I would be very understanding of OP, if I were hiring him/her.

Exaggerating what?
You said she called you a liar when it just sounded like a healthy dose of scepticism on her part. I'd be a little skeptical too If I was her, some cunts try take the piss in those situations.
Look she was probably just a bit annoyed she has reshuffle some rotas and surprised your even bothering to do the 2 weeks notice at all.

Eh, its annoying but I would also keep in mind a whole lot of people probably do this to get use out of leftover VAC/sick days and it would probably be a major pain for anyone having to schedule around it.

She didn't accuse you of anything though, she was being sceptical. That's a difference. Don't be so easily offended, you sound like ResetEra folk. Just forget about it and move on.

I don't get any sort of benefits though. Zero.

Then approach it like a professional. Don't say "really" and then ask if you're really sick.

If she doesn't want me there then she should say it.

Agreed. Very unprofessional.

Passive aggressiveness is not a good look in the workplace.
Imagine you took off a sick day and told your co-worker the next day and their response was "really"?
Some people will perceive that as questioning your honesty.

She said it In a way that was very much a "that's convenient"

tenor.gif

maybe she meant it's convenient like the synonym suitable like oh shit 'really' that's 'convenient' you are barfing and shitting yer brains out

regardless it's unbecoming of a professional and you should reign ungodly terror on her until she has a psychological break (do not do this)

just move on dude, let her think whatever she wants

Don’t be so sensitive...
Finish your time with your chin up and move in with your life.
Fair enough. There's been a long line of baffling decisions and reactions this past 6 months so I don't think I'm being sensitive but without being there and understanding I can see how someone could think that.

Your wasting your time looking for the height professional behaviour at a retail store.
She's probably thinking the same thing, wishing all these 18-25 year olds acted professional and didn't drink the day before and call in sick because there hungover or call in because they have an essay they need to finish despite having 3 weeks to get it done.
Retail is garbage lol.

Fair point. At this point you're right in that I shouldn't be surprised.

Op I assume you are relativley young, get used to this. Asshole bosses and people accusing you of things that aren't true is just one of those things. Quiting might inconvience them in the short term but they won't care really. Only quit if you really don't need the job, otherwise just keep your head down and get on with it while you work on a way to find a better situation. Use this experience to motivate yourself into doing something to expand your options for a different job, do some training or look to volunteer at a place that will get you experience in a different field and create connections. Good luck

You do basically get the benefit of choosing whether or not to come in to earn a days worth of pay with zero consequence if you say that you are sick and don't wanna. Most likely if they didn't really need you to cover shifts, they would have told you its over and don't worry about the two weeks notice.

Retail aint the same as your traditional office job where there are more responsibilities. They just want warm bodies to do labor.
