Was Capcom the Best Publisher of This Gen?

I was just playing DMC5 this morning and I dawned me how much Capcom kicked ass this generation, from new releases to re-issues.

Just look at the new games this gen:

Street Fighter V
Strider
Dead Rising 3 and 4
Monster Hunter World
Resident Evil 7
DMC5
RE2 Remake
RE3 Remake
MvC Infinite (OK, LOL)

And then the re-issues. This is a big deal as with BC (at least on the Xbox) it preserves these games going forward so they can be played forever:

Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
Both Mega Man Collections
Disney Afternoon Collection
Capcom Beat em' Up Collection
Dead Rising Collection
DMC Trilogy Collection
DMC
DMC4
Ultimate MvC 3
Dragon's Dogma
Phoenix Wright
Okami
Onimusha
Resident Evil Remake/RE0
RE4
RE5
RE6
RE Revelations 1/2

Then on the BC side of Xbox they allowed:
D&D Collection
Lost Planet 1, 2, 3
Capcom Arcade Cabinet
Street Fighter IV
RE: Code Veronica

I might be missing some, but this is an insane output for this generation from new games to old games that are preserved for the next gen.

The only really exciting prospects they've released this gen was all new Monster Hunter in World and DMC V for the starved fans. Everything else is pretty standard, Dead Rising 4 is meant to be bad too.

Capcom have been playing very safe, relying entirely upon proven successes. Their one big new IP Deep Down failed to reach the market and seemingly neither did its much vaunted Panta rhei engine, so they aren't without failures this gen.

Reissues don't count for me. They didn't actually do anything but re release an already existing title. Same goes for bc.

Resident evil 3 doesnt count as it's not out yet.

Dead rising has been shit since part 2 when they took it away from the Japanese that created 1 and made it a unique and fun experience.

Street fighter has just been the same thing with a couple new things each time since 4. The art style is boring to me now. Course I'm not a fighter fan.

The rest were pretty good. Mhw and dmc5 were just ok to me, didn't get into them.

Really I'd say Sony was the top for me as they have released a large amount of games of great quality that were spread across different genres. Even games I wasn't super into were still pretty solid like knack 2, and even though death standing can be a bit tedious after a while they still stood behind a very different kind of game. So I like how they release many types of games and let each one be it's own thing and they supported those games and its fans. They didn't release anything that I truly didn't care for, besides killzone shadow, that one I did not like at all.

I really enjoyed RE7 and RE2 remake, and I think they did a good job with Monster Hunter World even if it's not for me, but other than that, I can't say I'm impressed with their output this generation, especially compared to last.

Behind Sony and Nintendo but possibly the number one 3rd Party publisher this gen although Devolver Digital and Ubisoft have legit arguments.

Yes, they are. They've been consistantly hitting it out of the park with their flagship titles for a few years now. I don't know what changed in management, but whoever they hired deserves one hell of a raise.

I would argue that nintendo and sony have the better offerings but overall capcom has been one of the better pubs this gen. I legit enjoyed DR3 (4 sucks though) and MHW, RE7 but the rest is just...eh.

actually as far as third parties go my vote goes to bandai this gen.

Devil May Cry HD remaster missing there perhaps?

Capcom has been really great as of late, especially when it comes to RE, but I think they can do much better. I would like to see them release some big new IPs to mix up things and keep it fresh.

I'd give them best turn around given how the floundered during the previous generation. They put out a lot of good content, but it was either sequels or remakes for the most part.

I think Capcom masterfully used their IP’s, their partnerships, and their technical know how (and hiccups they also had with initial internal engine tech) and the output above shows it clearly. They had problems initially, but the quality and good timely use of remasters were able to weather the storm.

Lol Street Fighter 5, and half-assesd rushed Strider.

Did everyone remember when people said Capcom was the worst dev this gen or one of the worst until 2016? Remember that people though Mighty No.9 was going to put the nail in them as they were struggling and were losing money?

Now they are "the" best out of the blue? Come on.

I’m going to say Ubisoft for me. Ignoring the hate they get ilI had some of my most enjoyable experiences with their games. Plus they get major props for sticking with the games that had botched launches and making them awesome.

Yeah no. A bunch of remakes and SF5 makes Capcom one of the worst next to Squeenix and Ubisoft.

Some of those Capcom collections leave a lot to be desired in features and art, though DMC5 deserves goty2019 award for many.

But because unlike Sony and Nintendo they went multiplatform, some of their games have vastly superior graphics on PC and provide a whole different experience, so I pick Capcom among the 3.

Is that just a partial list for Xbox BC? Cause based on what you've shown it just looks like Capcom is milking the hell out of their old games with a lot of those rereleases.

And I gotta mention how badly they're treating the Switch user base. What is up with the prices for the RE and DMC games?

I will commend them for some Switch ports because they actually put in Switch-specific features and/or priced them reasonably: DDDA, RE:R 1&2, Okami and the port+localisation of MHXX. More like these please.

For me, DMCV is this generation's Tatsunoko vs Capcom; a passion project that has less to do with the publisher and more to do with the developers.

Capcom only treats mainline MH and RE as its marquee franchises and that's good...for the fans of those franchises.

What about the fans of their other franchises?

Look at MVCI, it turned out the way it did most likely because of a shit budget (good gameplay, bad production values). Who even okayed that first look of Chun-Li?
XVu59jo.jpg

Or how about the rush job they gave to Bengus for SFV?
A06kJKz.jpg

And where even are the rest?

No new God Hand.
No new Okami.
No new Viewtiful Joe.
No new Megaman X.
No new Rival Schools.
No new Darkstalkers.
No new Power Stone.
No new Dino Crisis.
No new Onimusha.
No new (or even localised) Sengoku Basara.
No new Ghosts 'n Goblins.
No localisation for some of the Gyakuten Saiban games.
No new Breath of Fire (edited in by indirect request, heh)

Props to them for Megaman 11, though if I wanna be fully cynical I'd say they made it just to dunk on Inafune and Mighty No. 9.

In terms of being a business that I presume was rebounding from sinking money into Panta Rhei, I think they did a wonderful job.

In terms of being more adventurous with new IP or entries in less profitable titles, they're the same conservative publisher as before, perhaps even more so.

Capcom arguably has the best collection of recognizable and beloved characters besides Nintendo yet they let it go to waste and would rather nip and tuck the faces of Resident Evil protagonists every few years.

Hopefully their recent financial successes, increased mindshare and adoption of the RE Engine will see them bring back some of their sleeping beauties. Oh and I'd like to see some non-photorealistic stuff with the RE Engine too.

Capcom is the only Japanese company that has successfully adapted to modern gaming and its needs.

I don’t agree with them being the overall best but I do admit they’ve always kept up with the competition.

I wish Capcom and Sega continued last gen’s trend of porting arcade games to XBL and PSN however.

Lets be honest here youre still upset Street Fighter V didnt make it to Xbox One

Its a very refined and competitive fighting game now

Coming from you im not going to listened for an output from someone who is heavily affiliated with Xbox and never even tried the game itself

And were talking about present and not the past Capcom

IF RE3R remake turns out great and Dino Crisis is real i couldnt be happier

If we're only including third parties, then probably. Ubisoft, even with Breakpoint and other missteps, was also up there this gen.

Publisher no, because it's hard to compete with the console manufacturers list of developers. As a developing house, easily near or at the very top.

Capcom has been great this gen but their last gen output is way too underrated: Lost Planet trilogy, Dead Rising 1-2, DMC4, Street Fighter 4, Marvel vs Capcom 3, Bionic Commando, Asura's Wrath, Dragon's Dogma, Ghost Trick, Monster Hunter 3-4...

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Probably not. They had a couple good years, but what did they do before 2018? DmC? Street Fighter V? These weren't terrible games, but hardly the kind of output I'd expect from someone who's "the best publisher of this gen."

Thing is, I don't think there was a consistently excellent publisher this gen. Capcom's comeback was pretty recent. Square had Nier: Automata, but mostly crap. Closest thing is probably Nintendo, but their games have gotten so bloated and boring in the last year or two that I'm hesitant to even give them the title at this point.

So... I dunno. But it ain't Capcom.

Capcom is having a good run recently, and I hope they stick with it because it's good for the industry and players alike to have so much quality shit to choose from. I don't think I'd call them the best publisher this gen though. This gen also saw Capcom destroy the Dead Rising franchise (3 was alright, but 4 was Dead Rising in name only), damage the Street Fighter brand and Marvel vs Capcom Ultimate was mediocre at best.

Absolutely Nintendo as best publisher for me, it's not even close especially when you take into account the WiiU and 3DS spillover due to their offset gen. Lining up to the PS4/Xbone launches in the fall of 2013 to next years PS5/XsX launches it's a massive list games I really enjoyed. Next year is looking good already.

Street Fighter V launched poorly but as an overall package it is the best fighter this generation IMO

I agree Capcom will continue to rise with RE3, Dino Crysis and Power Stone if they are done right

Sorry man, I didn't wanna literally list everything Capcom has forgotten.

At least BoF 1 and 2 are playable on Switch with NSO :p
