Microsoft announces plan to make the Xbox carbon neutral

PR nonsense more so when the Xbox is manufactured in China
Well, China is actually investing more heavily than most other countries in reducing their carbon footprint.
Their recent efforts with afforestation have been nothing short of impressive, and while they had some heavily polluted urban areas, their per-capita carbon footprint is way lower than the American one.
Also, they recently announced their decision to stop taking in and dispose of the USA garbage, which is going to move the numbers even more in their favor.

While it’s great that gaming companies want to have a conscience , every bit they do for good gets offset by something like Khalid meeting Kanye to get yeezeys while both on their private planes.

There is really very little we as small grade consumers can to do to offset what the ultra elite do on a daily basis.

This isn't true at all! Why? Because Khalid was going to be meeting with Kanye to get yeezeys either way. With or without these smaller carbon neutral measures. So yes, every little bit helps.

Oh lovely, after the ideological nonsense in gaming over the last 5 years since Anita and Kotaku raged across the internet, the one thing I wanted more of was more preaching and pandering.

Sony is doing this PR stuff too. Gimme a break. I'll go even further to help the planet by not buying your product, right?

It is impossible---at our current tech level---to produce electronics without a net negative impact on the environment. It is also impossible to remain competitive if you don't manufacture primarily in countries where the standard of living is rock bottom.

These companies aren't going to eco-friendly themselves out of business. Stop acting like anything up to that point is nothing.

Lastly, the only reason they keep making consoles is because you keep buying them. If you want the environment to be saved you're going to have to do it together, from your side of the market. As long as demand exists, somebody will profit from supplying.

what exactly is carbon neutral and how can the xbox achieve that?

Sony announces this - Loads of goodwill
Microsoft announces this - Loads of hate.

Never change Gaf lol.

You must have not read the Sony thread then. Everyone was bitching about them being SJW's for it.

I see your xbox goggles are working as good as ever though.

Not 'thinking.' 'Virtue signalling.' If they actually cared about the environment, they would stop making electronics all together.

Sony and Microsoft's new carbon neutral game, hide and seek, no electricity or plastic needed. (I'm sure the investors would love the idea of these companies replacing their tech with old school tech)

You really can't make this shit up anymore.

So,if they make thier plant in China carbon neutral or even carbon positive it won’t matter? Because it’s it’s China?

Why can’t there be responsible manufacturers that also use China, but make thier manufacturing carbon responsible?
Because of China's Carbon footprint and love of Coal . I'm not a fan of Carbon trading myself .

I love the idea that a disposable, mass produced, energy guzzling toy with no practical purpose, shipped 5000 miles can be environmentally friendly.

. However, you’re right in the sense that even if we do all this, the richest 10% can ruin it by not giving up their lifestyle.

You’ll need to kill democracy to get that done, friend.

In Ontario, electricity bills doubled as the government shifted energy to use less carbon. Next election, that party was decimated, ending up with a single seat. Why? Because suddenly people were losing their homes and old people couldn't afford electricty. Who is going to vote for that? Even millennials want houses and vacations and comfy retirements and yummy food and toys and a home and a car and heat in the winter.

Our whole system is built on cheap, plentiful energy. It is all well and good to yell about killing the planet on twitter, but you are going to get massive political upheaval and violence if you try to force people to ‘give up their lifestyle’.

By the by, only reason we have all the stuff we do is because of fossil fuels. No fossils fuels, no modern world.

Make a 'Naked' SKU that has:

No Controller
No HDMI Cable
No Power Cable
Very minimal packaging (no setup instruction card, GamePass promo, plastic wrap)

This can be sold as an option to existing Xbox One customers that already have:

A Controller
A HDMI Cable
A Power Cable
Superfluous packaging from an Xbox One/S/X

Sell it for $50 cheaper than the package with the Controller, HDMI Cable and Power Cable included.

There is your $449.00 SKU and MS gets to be a bit greener

If I can save 50 bucks by using the controller and cables that I already have on hand I'm in.

would you still buy it if it wasn't $50 cheaper?

Microsoft can just buy carbon credits to make it "neutral". Obviously, the consumer using the device won't be neutral. The trucks shipping them and the factories stamping them won't be "neutral". Microsoft will either buy credits or build some ugly windfarms to offset the emissions produced by the XsX.

They can model these windfarms after the XSX (I of course have no issues with "ugly windfarms" - it's not like power plants are a beauty).

Chinese plants have broken the rules in the past. They'll make a compliant facility and then still do it the old way. A good example of this was the Lumber Liquidators flooring fiasco that happened about 5 years ago. Despite the claim that they were selling CARB2 compliant product, Lumber Liquidators was selling laminates that contained excessive formaldehyde made in Chinese plants. They had to pay 30 million or so in fines because of it.

Not that I care; I give fuck all about bullshit carbon compliance on a gaming console. In fact, I'm more apt to buy one that isn't carbon compliant just to make the virtue signalers and finger waggers grow hemmorhoids. This just tells me the next Xbox is going to be way overpriced, and it's a desperate bullet point to try and justify it. "It's $600, but it's fucking CARBON COMPLIANT BREh!" Yeah, fuck off.

I see people walking around there with breathing masks on. And the olympics was an embarrassment; it was widely reported to be the most polluted site for an olympic event ever.

Carbon offsetting is cheap as chips, honestly, a years worth of driving is a couple of quid if you don't mind investing into less glamorous schemes like third world cook stoves, or helping large industry switch oil / lube.

Planting trees is the most expensive form of carbon offsetting, unfortunately.

I'd like that people had a more rational, less biased way to think about things.
Yes, climate change IS a thing. Its undeniable. Theres scientific proof about it. That does not mean that you should go and set Australia woods into fire using a t-shirt with the face of Greta Thumberg on it.
What I'd like to see is what Microsoft is presenting here. A rational, long term plan to reduce emissions, in a way that economies are not disrupted.

Not surprising as every major manufacturer seems to be targeting a carbon neutral or negative goal for their facilities.

I am surprised at how many here are aware of the clean energy credits that are out there.

Absolutely no information on how the fuck they are going to do that.

99% certain they just money hat "carbon credits" from a fucking wind farm somewhere, which in reality acchieves nothing.
Pretty much....exactly this.

Please. I wasn't born yesterday. It's a virtue signal business centric statement by Microsoft who're tapping into the "save ze planet" mania which has been manufactured, distributed & sold en masse by the media & elites over the past decade. It's like handing out rainbow flags in Gears saying "we support ze LGBT!". As I said, it's a virtue signal.

And no, considering Microsoft directly promotes globalism & expansion of markets (including China's) in order to increase marketshare & the consumer base (i.e. more people = more potential customers as per globalist thinking), they have zero right to pretend they're helping save the planet. Fuck that hypocrisy.

Did you stop to read the article and realize Sony (and everyone else) is doing the exact same damn thing? All of these tech companies are doing this, expecting a single one to knock it off now is idiotic. It's what's fashionable for them and of COURSE it's about increasing their global marketshares because they're multi-billion dollar mega-conglomerates xD.

And I mean, you post this while using a computer or smartphone that was probably manufactured in China by some poor sweatshop workers. So we're all indirectly supporting what these companies do, on some level, by using their products.

Tbh. Even if I would play 20 switches at the same time I would probably use less electricity than my XBO X does.

Tell devs to be more efficient to make less bugs that need patches. . Tell studios like Ubisoft to not make assassinsCreed games on 3 continents at the same time while flying back and forth to see how it goes etc.. Don't sell me DLC. Patches and DLC...all of that uses wifi electricity servers and bullshit.
Give me local coop instead of online modes only so I don't waste server electricity. Let me change my XBOX hard drive instead of forcing me to lose my warranty or sending it to MS in case something goes wrong. Turn of the PS4 toylight in the controller.

As long as all of that shit is still the case all the companies can FUCKOFF lol. It's probably just PR with a lot of ",if we do it we get some nice benefits from governments like tax discounts". Why do rich people donate money? It's to have a better image. To shape the world and for benefits. Not because of having a heart.

This is so quaint. You automatically presumed I was a Sony fanboy or something because I criticized Microsoft for xyz reason. Do you know what I'm currently doing (I literally have the pause menu on screen)? I'm playing through Ryse on my Xbox One X whilst drinking my second glass of wine of the evening. Good times with my gamepass & One X.

But, I won't ever roll over for PR marketing speak looking to capitalize on current-year woke media trends by "virtue signalling" planet saving credentials when the reality is much, much more complex. Whether it's from Microsoft or anyone else. Carbon Neutrality in the west = bullshit from the moment the current demographic explosion in the third world remains a censored topic in pseudo environmentalist (in reality far left extremist) circles.

I didn't really assume anything, just pointing out that other companies are doing the same thing. This is a gaming forum and Sony's a big name, so I just used them as a goto example, that's all.

Regardless, yes all of these tech companies are pushing this stuff but as long as you support their products you are still a part of the problem and aren't really too deserving to complain. And population expansion in third-world countries isn't necessarily part of the problem, unless you're with those dudes that essentially want to advocate genocide or "population control" when there's more than enough resources on this planet to sustain expanding populations naturally.

Also a good number of those places are seeing economic growth anyhow; you would actually be surprised at how much green energy stuff is pushed on them basically to trap them into debt. Certain groups and agencies by and large just want to expand that to Western nations, same as how they want to take the Chinese model of censorship and social monitoring and bring it to the West while still pursuing hyper-capitalism for their own profits.

Anyhow this is something of a topic expanding well beyond just gaming, seems more appropriate as an Off-Topic conversation imho.

Carbon increased the vegattion of the planet. Man made Glomar Warming is myth, the climate is always changing, mostly because of the distance from eath to the sun. More virtue signaling. This means the next Xbox will be weak and the games will be boring and awful.

Shhhh
You will lift the veil and calm the mass hysteria that has millions of dollars exchanging hands....
