It is not, the virus is spreading across the world, the difference is that in Europe, we're currently the only country who is testing every single person with fever because the government decided to dig deeper.

Other countries simply decided to ignore the issue because:

a) they don't want to scare people off (and investors) which is happening here in Italy unfortunately.

b) They aren't prepared to face the issue so they choose to cover their eyes and hope nobody gets hurt. (that's embarassing)

c) we still don't have a clear idea whether it is worth making a big deal out of this: the people who died (mostly elders) were already in poor health conditions so coronavirus was just one of many factors. People can recover from it as they did from SARS.

d) they know they have many cases and they're blatantly lying. (also shameful)

I think create panic is definitely a mistake, i've seen pics of people buying everything they could from stores even in cities that are not quarantined, that's silly.

But underestimating the outbreak is a big mistake too, cause it's affecting all of us, it will become pandemic in a matter of months: it's very easy to spread and most countries are not taking the right measures.

Personally i'm a bit disappointed by the EU, i was expecting some mandatory measures forced from Bruxelles to any member state, a unified solution, we need to fight the outbreak all together instead of letting each country finding the solution by their own, which is leading to questionable decisions like Austria with their failed attempt to close borders.

It is disingenuous to call it a full blown pandemic when the epicenter of the virus has it contained and petering out, and abroad it is middling.

Not yet, supermarkets are open but many smaller stores are still closed. KFC only does online orders and Starbucks are all closed. Still not a lot of container trucks on the roads on the way to the ports. Busier since CNY with small goods vehicles and private cars on the roads, but not much.

Covid-19 uses the ACE receptors to enter the cell and the expression of said receptors vary from race to race and even from person to person depending on the diet and habits of a person.

For example, mongoloids (chinese, japanese, koreans, etc) tend to express more ACE receptors than..let's say native americans. And yes, it also depends on the habits of a person, since ACE is the enzyme that converts angiotensin-I into angiotensin-II (which regulates blood pressure). If a person has hypertension and is not under treatment, you can rest assured that person has indeed more ACE receptors expressed than a healthy person.

When swine flu was declared a pandemic, half of the confirmed cases were in the US.
Currently, about 3% of the confirmed cases are outside China, not 1%, and is obviously going to rise.
Not sure what the point of the graphic is.

You are going to have to give me some actual data on this. SARS used the ACE receptors and people of all races seemed to get plenty sick.
Currently Coronavirus doesn't seem to have any trouble getting Italians or Iranians sick, who are obviously not mongoloids. Italy for example is at 230 cases and 7 deaths, while Japan is at 154 cases and 1 death.
The only numbers I've seen on this show Italians as having much lower expression than Japanese (something like 19% to high 40s), and yet here we are.

I wonder if people will call the Chinese racist when they start banning people from Italy, Iran etc from entering China over fears of infection :pie_thinking:

Pretty much everything is still closed where I am and they still have the "you can only leave your apartment grounds once every two days" system in place. I have noticed more people out and about in my apartment gardens though (taking their kids outside to play in the snow, jogging, walking dogs etc). A week ago, the only people you saw outside were either rushing to the supermarket, or coming back laden with groceries. Definitely more relaxed now. Zero confirmed and suspected reported again today, so now the wait is on... While my cooking has gotten a lot better, I'm looking forward to being able to eat out again (one of the joys of living in China)

I don't see how those are particularly relevant. Both seem to be talking about ACE2 receptors in the kidneys (and testis). The first one doesn't give any data whatsoever on variation of expression amongst populations, merely that those specific parts of the body have higher amounts of expression, so there may be concern for renal failure etc. Even just going by the first article you posted, the lungs, upper part of the body, seem to have low amounts of expression, yet people are dying from pneumonia.
For the second article I have to buy it to read it. The conclusion just says "We confirmed the contribution of an angiotensin-converting enzyme-independent pathway for angiotensin II generation in the kidneys of nondiabetic, normotensive white, but not black, individuals" which doesn't mean anything to me in regards to coronavirus.

Do different populations have significantly different amounts of expression of the ACE2 receptors in the lungs/respiratory system? Does this play a role in severity of symptoms/development of pneumonia?
There is no data I can find on this, and what is happening in the real world (Iran, Italy, China), would suggest to me that ACE2 expression either doesn't play a significant role, or that it isn't that different amongst populations (in the respiratory system).

Think I’ll start now.

Experts say preparation, not panic, is what's needed now.

"We need to think about whether you have enough medication and essential foods such as canned foods, some pasta or food that can give us fibre, carbohydrate and protein for two weeks, if things were to interrupt the supply chain of food," Professor Mackay says.

"Don't forget to prepare for pets as well, with extra supplies of dried pet food and flea treatments in case there are shortages."

But he cautions against panic-buying supplies or hoarding food.

"We don't want to see empty shelves," he says.

There are MANY more infected by now, they just don't know it. I'd say the majority that went through it never knew it. Unless ya'll geriatrics or super sick already, stop panicking. Chances are some of us have already had it and thought it was the flu. It is only dangerous to the weak and sickly. Grow some balls. If you're conservative or libertarian you have to support this virus, it is going to lessen the pension burden-the biggest public spending component of a taxation heavy system. Old people be afraid, very afraid. Your fate is sealed.
