Bethesda Was “Surprised How Few People Wanted to Take Part in PvP” in Fallout 76

Pete Hines says the team wants to keep building upon the Wastelanders update.

On April 7, Fallout 76 becomes a proper Fallout game. That date marks the release of Fallout 76: Wastelanders, a free expansion for the existing PC, Xbox One, and PS4 release. The expansion adds human NPCs, reputation systems, dialog trees, and single-player instances. Basically, everything you love about Fallout.

Fallout 76 was a different swing for the brand, one that looks misaimed in hindsight. According to Bethesda senior vice president of global marketing & communications Pete Hines, the team admits that they misunderstood their audience.

"Well, I mean at the end of the day, our intention was always, we're going to put this out there, see what folks think, and then cater the stuff that we do later to their reaction. So, for example, I think we were a little surprised how few people wanted to take part in PvP and how many more they were interested in PvE together. As opposed to, 'I want to test my mettle against you and let's get into a duel.' There's some folks who do, don't get me wrong, but I think it's a smaller percentage of our player base than we thought," said Hines.

Wastelanders is the first step in really making Fallout 76 into the experience that some players expect when they see the name "Fallout." Like the extensive work done on The Elder Scrolls Online, Bethesda is committed to improving Fallout 76 and delivering what the community wants.

Hines also wanted to let the community know that Wastelanders isn't the final step. Instead, it's just the beginning of support and ongoing content for Fallout 76. "We're going down this path. It's not that we're doing this and we're done. They've done a lot of work on a systems level to make things possible in Wastelanders that they want to build on and use for more content that we're going to be doing the rest of this year and into next year and beyond."

What future content is in development? The team isn't currently talking about what happens after Wastelanders, but they aren't swinging blindly either.

"We have a plan. We have a roadmap that we'll be sharing before too long, probably after Wastelanders," said Hines. "Let's get through Wastelanders and then talk about that. That will cover all the way through the end of this year. We've already been talking about, internally, what is our plan for content into next year. When we feel confident enough to share that with everybody, I'm not certain, but like, we throw it out pretty far."

Fallout 76: Wastelander is coming to PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on April 7, with an additional launch of Fallout 76 on Steam on the same date. We here at USgamer will have a more extensive interview with Hines in the near future.

Are people still playing this?
Ok, maybe. Cowclicker was still popular by the core player base even after they removed the graphics for the actual cows!

this is what I’m sayin too.

their player base cant be that large enough to justify keeping this game alive.

It just seems like they’re desperately performing CPR on a cadaver.

So in others words "we were surprised how many Fallout players expected something close to a Fallout experience, rather than look to us to do a really crap job of a Call of Duty or Fortnite experience. Minds blown here, seriously....we've paused development Super Fallout Kart, Fallout City, Falloutris and Fallemon until we can work out how to make our players swallow everything we pump out again".

Fallout 76 was fucked from the start.

- Made by the B Team

- No testing, no community feedback, just "Here's a thing. Buy it."

- People were already disappointed with how far from it's roots Fallout 4 had strayed.

Fallout 76 didn't stumble out of the gates, Bethesda shoved Fallout 76 through them but forgot to build the floor beyond them, and Fallout 76 plummeted to it's death.

Bethesda sucks.

Wasn't the issue that, to engage in PvP, you had to walk up to someone and challenge them to a duel, otherwise you couldn't do PvP? I haven't played it but I remember at the launch the "PvP" was retarded. If that's what he's saying people didn't want to do, I don't think that necessarily means people didn't want PvP...

Fallout 76 got great after the first few patches. I'm someone who's played since launch. The PVP is incredibly unbalanced however and people who spec for it can basically 1 shot you if you have a bounty, it's not really fun to engage with.

Really looking forward to Wastelanders.

I think the real problem with PVP was how much of a pain it was to engage it and there was 0 reward for doing it. The pvp was just a garbage dueling system. This article proves how even more out of touch than they even realized they were since they didn't even make a good system for anyone to use to begin with.

always chasing the next thrill
You cram in pvp in a huge SP game.
And you are surprised???

FFS they dont even know one of the most basic principles of marketing, Know your audience. Not surprised though, most businesses have become lazy and listening to very small groups dictate their product/ service.

Sort of off topic but I'm wondering if Bethesda Studios is going to be able to cut it next gen - seems like they went down a Skyrim port cash in route this gen without really making anything excitingly new this gen - ie they sat on their laurels

Sort of reminds of Bioware as they migrated from respected RPG maker to a mess as they cashed in on "fantasy/scifi dating simulator" whilst their games really went nowhere.

I want ES6 just like people wanted a great next Mass Effect .... but ....

I think it just goes to show how out of touch Bethesda has become in regards to Fallout and what the community really wants.

I don't remember anyone asking for a Fallout where you can fight other players so I don't see how they are surprised by this.

No one asked for a online fallout game either. And no one asked for a fallout game with building crafting either. No one asked for a fallout game with no npcs either. In fact they have us a lot of shit no one asked for.

Actually everything we have asked for like fallout 3 remasters, a new fallout game that was actually good and like a post apocalypse, a fallout game with more adult themes, fallout new Vegas remaster, less bugs, and a ton of other shit they haven't ever given us. All they do is shit no one wants and then say "huh......no one wanted this"

Getting more and more interested. But man, fuck those npcs are ugly as fuck :messenger_grimmacing_. I wonder if many of the boarded and inaccessible houses are now open and possible to explore.

Never doubt Bethesda. Starfield will be amazing and ES6 will be the glorious end of next generation.

I'm not. At this point, I just assume that Bethesda are going to fuck it up horribly, just like everything else to do with this game.

I would, admittedly, like to be wrong - maybe then I wouldn't feel so completely ripped off by the pile of shit that Fallout 76 was, but imagining that's even remotely likely is just going to lead to more disappointment.

Great now I can play this game.

Don't get your hopes up, they've been breaking earlier fixes with every new update. Every time the game takes a step forward, it steps in shit, then while they try to wipe it off the dog comes back and takes another shit just one step away.

Just shows how out of touch with their playerbase they actually are

The player base or them? Because things are working as intended. The game is mostly empty with Beth diehards or curious people still lingering about.
I played it for 3 days, off and on. There is a fun game in there, I can feel it, it was just not present when I played.

Lots of wasted potential. It felt like they wanted to do a Fallout MMO without all the hard work and money it takes to launch a successful MMO that will stand the test of time.
This game is limping along like a dying pooch, looking for a spot to die alone.

How extensive is this Wastelanders thing going to be? - if Bethesda turns this into a single player experience akin to any other Fallout game, then count me in.

EDIT; holy crap... I just watched the preview video... and this looks great. I see nothing to be cynical about here. Yeah, okay, if you hate Bethesda. But if you’re a single player Fallout enthusiast, and like myself had zero interest in this game, then this is a total game-changer.

Fuck yes.
